How do the navigation drives (Up, Down, Exit, Enter, etc) work? I know somehow it's linked to the CA smells, but not sure how. I'd like to figure out how to make norns who can avoid drowning by moving away from or towards (if aquatic) water.
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |

I think the Aqua Norns from Norngarden have such a function. When the smell of water is missing, they feel "extremely down" in the sense of the direction. In addition they got instincts that tell them to push button and pull lift (normally lifts drive down when pulled) to please that need.
Since bodies of water are usually at the bottom of metarooms, this strategy brings the Norns in there quickly.
Generally those directions are like any other drive, such as hunger or crowdedness. You simply program into the creatures' genetics how to treat em.

Actually, the way the Aquas work is that every time they're on land, an emitter constantly pumps "Down" into them. When they're underwater, the emitter ceases to function and they resume normal behavior.
This can be altered so that norns that find themselves underwater get pumped full of Up drive and therefore seek the nearest elevator and use it to go up.
Alternatively, there's the method Kathira used for her Aquaphobic Norns (note: webpage is in German). The gist of that is that the norns get scared when underwater, and with the help of an instinct tend to retreat from water.

Hmm, I don't suppose Norns feel a need to go left or right? Could be useful in the Norn Terrarium.

The Enhanced Chichis apparently have a new organ called "new organ" which causes the norn, among other things, to go up when drowning.

But is there a way to get them to go to or away from water regardless of the direction? How do homesick norns find home?

They smell 'home' or 'food' or whatever, know it's linked to an object ( see z_DS agent smells.cos ) and then approach it, until they're in the room which contains the highest concentration of smell. At this point, if it's food they'll pick it up and eat it. I imagine that for something like grendel-smell, they smell 'grendel' and then retreat from it until they're in a room which contains a lower concentration of 'grendel' smell.
