Do creatures have to be able to pick something up before they can eat it, or can they 'eat it off the floor'?

I recall in Creatures 2 Norns were able to eat mushrooms off the floor. I don't know if this works in C3/DS however. |

They can, but it's not by choice. Rather, it's determined by the behavior of the object.
If the object cannot be picked up, they will just eat it without the object in question being picked up. However, if the object can be picked up, they always will before eating it.

Yes, in C3/DS they'll just eat something off the floor if its BHVR doesn't specify that it can be picked up. Heaven help them if it's something that isn't *on* the floor, however...
Took me embarrassingly long to realize that

So if they can just touch it, they can eat it?

If it's on the floor.
I had a problem once where several of my Norns starved to death. I couldn't figure out why when there was plenty of food (fish). Turns out I hadn't specified that they were pick-up-able. It didn't matter that the Norns could "touch" them, the fish couldn't be picked up and weren't on the floor so the Norns had no way of eating them, despite trying many times.
As soon as I realized this and fixed the fishes' BHVR the surviving Norns went to town.
