Barbary Norns

Hello everybody... figured I should probably should stop lurking and try to get some feedback on my current project from the community^^

I finally feel comfortable in my modeling skills (Maya+Mudbox) to try to make my own breed: the Barbary Norns. I'm still in the 'brainstorming' part of the project, so nothing is really set in stone yet.

I figured that since we already have norns based on tigers and bears, why not create a breed based on lions... hence the idea for the Barbary Norns was hatched. For the curious, they are named for an extinct subspecies of lion.

I am still working on some concept sketches for what I want the breed to look like. Newborns of both genders will be born with spots. Females will be born a lighter cream color with dark spots, and males will be born a darker tan with light spots. As they mature, their markings will fade. Mature males will develop an impressive, probably darkly colored mane (the mane will begin to develop at adolescence, reach it's peak in adulthood, and grow sparser/lighter in color in older norns)... while females will develop more subtle hair-dos (I was thinking something similar to C1s female horse norns).

Genetically speaking, I'd like to try to mimic some of their namesake's social behavior. I'm planning for the females of the breed to be very social (if possible, I'd like them to be especially fond of the company of female norns), and suffer less from crowding than standard norns. Perhaps loneliness may even have a negative effect on their health or fertility. The males on the other hand, are more solitary creatures. While they enjoy and seek out the company of female norns, they dislike the presence of other adult males makes angry (perhaps even to the point where they will kill other adult males). This tendency will begin in adolescence and reach its peak in adulthood. In addition to targeting other male norns, adult male Barbary norns respond strongly to grendels-- and will attack and who stray too close to them. I haven't really decided how the best way to go about this is: I might have to add a "same sex pheromone" chemical in order to accomplish this (behaving differently towards members of their own sex). While I'm pretty familiar with norn genetics... I haven't been able to get the genetics kit to work with my game (GOG version of creatures exodus). I'm planning on trying to run the game/genetics kit on Windows 7 to see if that works... but if it doesn't I may need some help writing the genome.

I am also undecided if I want them to have your standard norn diet, or if I want them to be more "carnivorous" (getting more nourishment from critters than fruit/seeds/ect... or perhaps even making them get nourishment from hitting ettins/grendels) OR what breed slot they would occupy... any suggestions?

I hope to post some concept sketches, and the first sprites very soon.

Three things:
1. Love the idea!
2. What game are they for?
3. Do you want me to write a fanfic about how the lone shee finds them?

This seems like a great norn breed.

Nice, well thought out and you have most of the skills to accomplish what you want. Congrats!

I'll be keeping an eye on this one!

As for breed slot....... Ettin Y only has the Aardvark Norn, Geat C has only the Temple Norn, Geat M/N/O are Mask Norns, with P being the Painted Chichi.....there are others in Grendel and Norn slots too.

I love you. This is sooo amazing.
I think they should be carnivorous only, definitely, and the yajuta pack and KT will help with that...
Also, I'm thinking that there should only be one male at a time who kills off all the others... maybe this is too violent, idk.
I think the males should be reaaaally laid back and easygoing until a threat appears, then they go insane.
I CAN NOT wait for these, best of luck :D

This sounds like a fantastic idea! :D

Please base them on the CFE norns - they would have the better capabilities to form emotional ties that would be helpful in creating the kind of breed you want.

Thanks for the input^^

@Sam: I'd love if you could write a fanfic describing their discovery! That would be really neat.

@Gumbo: That's pretty much the behavior I envisioned. Males becoming increasingly antagonistic towards each other starting at adolescence until they reach adulthood -- at which point multiple males are liable to kill one-another until there is only one left. I'm still torn on the issue of carnivorous-ness, as I'd ideally like it possible to raise them in worlds without a lot of outside agents/scripts. I'll see though^^

I'm going to make them for c3/ds: mostly because I *may* at some point in the future work on a Savannah/grassland themed metaroom for them. However, I already have a few coding projects going, so this will need to wait until I've finished them.

I should probably get some concept sketches up by the end of the week. I have a pretty good idea of what these critters are going to look like in my head...I just need to actually get it down on paper.

EDIT: I was definitely planning at looking to the CFE genome for some guidance. I haven't gotten a lot of time to play with CFE norns yet, so it's definitely a good time for some "research"... also, do you know what Vamp's policy is on incorporating her genome into new breeds?

Vamp has a tutorial for how to CFE a norn on her website. :) It's pretty safe to say that it's free to use as a base - although credit/linkback would be polite.

O.K. With any luck I can have it and the other fic I've been working on ready for the CCSF.

Concept Sketch 1

Here is a quick sketch of the general forms of the adult norns. I was messing around with the male's hair a little bit. I gave him dreadlocks (pulled back into a pony) and added some tribal-esque beads just for fun... and I liked how it looked.

This of course, is just an early concept sketch and liable to change^^ I'm trying for something that conveys "lion" while still looking more like a norn than a lion.

thanks as always for the feedback^^

I got Lion from the male, mostly from the ears. The male skin/hair style and color make me thing of tribes deep in the amazon, mixed with Jamaicans. And the female, a lot like a gringo, or regular Caucasian woman.

The spots will add continuity from with the earlier life stages.

In general......I AM NOT WORTHY TO BE IN YOUR PRESENCE!!!!

Love it, mainly the tribal-esque beads and dreadlocks in the hair and tail!

The fanfic is going well. When done, I'll PM it to you.

Concept Sketch 2a (3d-Adolescent(?) male)

Sketch 2b (3d-Adolescent(?) male)

Thanks for the input^^

I still need to install/config the program I use for making the "base" models... so these are basically just continuations of the sketches.

I am exploring different ways to make the male's hair progress from baby->child->adolescent->youth->adult without looking too weird. I was a bit lazy with these sketches, so I didn't include beads/different materials. I also got lazy with the ears... they're basically just blobs right now xD
