As I stated on Creaturetopia, I recently finished a beta version of my Flesheater Grendels - an attempt to create a predatory grendel that, while still aggressive towards your norns, are less likely to rampage and take out your entire population and can be driven off by most norns.

As the topic there states, as well as testing them out myself, I'd like to have other people test them and see how they perform in their worlds.

While the beta version is attached to my post there, CCaves unfortunately doesn't allow attachments. If you feel like testing out some predatory grendels for me but don't feel like joining Ctopia, PM me your e-mail and I'll get you the genome and a pair of babies.

While I'm still working on the Flesheaters, I'd like to see some feedback from this forum. I asked a similar question back on Ctopia, but now I want to see what everyone here thinks.

As for the question I'm asking - What sort of features make a grendel an efficient norn predator (in your opinion)? What could be done to improve the standard Jungle Grendel (or Banshee Grendel, for that matter)?

I'm aiming to make the Flesheater Grendels one of the best, if not the best, grendel to give norns a challenge for Wolfling Runs, and want some opinions on how to make that possible.

Well, there are the obvious things like putting the instinct on max, removing other instincts and praising chemical.

Another thing that worked in my experiments not too bad (although not perfect) an alternated form of the CL Genetic tutorial "Hand Obsession", so those beasts are fixed on Norns all the time.

I have a genome of immortal killer beasts. The only things they do is slapping and sometimes laying down and making a break (didn't get that out for some reason). I worked on them for a while, but they are still sometimes behaving silly, like Hit Door, Hit Self or Hit Fruit. Also do freshly born ones need some training till they found out how nice slapping is.
All in all I am actually not unhappy with them, if you want I can send you a copy of the latest version.

Well, I've done some more work on the Flesheaters, and it's time for another update.

Recently, I've found what exactly makes the standard grendels so hit-or-miss. They aren't exactly predators, so to speak. They get angry at the scent of norn as well as a half ton of other things. Being so easily irritated, they constantly attack norns until they've purged their entire world of their prey. This behavior might make for a more interesting game, but it's not good for those who want population control for their wolfling runs.

That's the problem the Flesheaters are aiming to fix. I want them to be more like what a lion is to a zebra, rather than what a serial killer is to his victims. Rather than attacking norns nonstop, they should only be angry half the time and take out only the weaker norns.

With that in mind, the changelist for the next version is as follows.

-The titular ability is no longer an adult-gained ability - Flesheaters of all ages can now feed by slapping other creatures. My reasoning for this is to encourage hunting for food rather than anger.

-The reaction to being slapped has been toned down - flesheaters no longer bug out and run like the dickens after only two slaps. Rather, they respond in a similar manner to normal norns, in that they are more likely to become scared rather than angry. Flesheaters of all ages are much more resilient to slaps. Younger grendels are no longer glasslike and easily killed. On the other hand, adults now react the same as the younger grendels do to assaults.
Resistance to slapping was made so your hardmen can't take out the entire grendel population within the first 30 minutes of a wolfling run. On the other hand, the universal "don't attack back" response to being slapped means that hardmen will wind up winning most of the fights. While a group of flesheaters working together can easily down a hardman, lone flesheaters aren't much of a threat.

-Anger has been added to the list of drives affected by the Constitutive Drive Maitenence, Painly Drive Overwhelmsion, and Fearly Drive Overwhelmsion organs. This is meant to encourage the flesheaters to back down when faced with aggressive prey.

-The overall anger of the Flesheaters has been toned down to encourage flesheaters to hunt out of hunger rather than anger.

I'm still looking for a place to upload the current version of the genome, but for the time being you can pick up two freshly hatched babies at TCR:

-Carnivore
-Carnosaur

Check them out and see what you think. I'd love to hear about how they act in other peoples's worlds. That's the point of making this beta public, anyway - to work out the bugs and get the grendels to their very best.

Just got Exodus off GoG. Gonna give these a try. Also gonna look in my old stuff and see what of yours I have from the olden times.

As flesheaters that eat Norns they should be more agressive when hungry and less when not. They could also be able to distinguish diffrent Nornbreeds and (normally) stick to atack those who do not deffend (or even attak) and try to avoid breeds like the Hardmannorns, which they only aproach when they are realy really hungry. But I think this would be extremly complicated or even impossible.

Distinguishing between breeds is impossible, yes.

How do they act towards ettins? Will they attack them of leave them alone? Usually in a mixed-race run I find the norns and grendels duke it out while the ettins take over the world!

By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do.

As I've been slowly getting back into Creatures as of late, I felt it was probably a good idea to finish these guys up. Hopefully, with my newfound knowledge in receptors (that was previously used in the Banshee Hydrolisk), I can make them even better predatory grendels.

However, I must ask. Is anyone actually interested in these? I notice the pair up on TCR have a fair bit of downloads, but I have not been getting much feedback.

To answer the previous question: They should have roughly the same response towards ettins as standard grendels. As norns are by far the most common species used in wolfling runs, I felt it more appropriate to base the Flesheaters on hunting norns rather than ettins.

Perhaps you could release an Ettin-hunting variant. My current world is chock full of Ettins that are existing unabated, and a choice of herd-thinners would be nice (I know of Punisher and Ripper already.)

I know I'm interested in these grendels, however I'm not sure if I want to test them. I just got my game to actually work for a bit, I don't want it to break again. However, if no one else volunteers, I will. :)

Lalasa, the two on TCR are just normal adoptions, you don't need to install anything as such - you unzip them, put the .creature file in the "My Creatures" folder, and click 'import' in the game itself.

Then Bob is your proverbial uncle. :)
