In GIMP I add an alpha layer, paste screenshot, rectangle select around the area I want, and then crop to selection but I don't know how to delete the image around it. It used to work for me but now it doesn't now it either leaves the alpha channel background or an all white background.

You have an Alpha Channel and you have the wanted area selected, right? Now go to the Select-Menu in the main window and invert it, so that everything except of the wanted area is selected. Go again to the Select-Menu and make it float.
Delete now the floating selection in the layer window. Autocrop the image and save.

What button in the layer section deletes the floating selection?

In the Layer Selection you must right click the floating selection, and there it should be something pretty clear like "Delete Layer".

Could you be any more specific about your problems with GIMP? I don't use it, but it'd help others to help you if they knew exactly what difficulties you are having. |

Try looking at the GIMP tutorials, or putting "Gimp tutorial" and layers, or greyscale, or photo airbrushing or whatever into Google.

Malkin is right, there are quite a lot tutorials out there and the ones in the link she posted are even the tutorials on the official page.
