I'm definitely not going to assume this game will be bad. That was only the demo, and there is still a lot to do! At least they're actually listening to the community, some game developers don't even do that.

Well said, Panda-Mist! I've been posting some comments here and there on the Fishing Cactus blog, and most of my questions have been answered. It's awesome to have such an open dialogue with the developers! They recently asked for some ideas about the reward/punishment system: They're definitely listening to us, which is awesome!

Well we will know weather it is good or bad when it's released. Until than we shouldn't think it's going to be bad but hope for it to be good! |

O Fellow Creatures Fans, I am scared...
I've recently been playing C3 all over again. It's rekindled my love, but has made me even more apprehensive about C4.
- I don't like the idea that we can alter the appearances of norn's who are born to parents. The first-born that we make, yes, but altering the one's after seems to take the fun out of seeing what each norn will look like after it's hatched.
- Oh the layout of C4 in the demo... *weeps* It all looks so simple and void of the lovely metal, technological, hard-ware feel. If we're to have a norn editor, they should *AT LEAST* make it look like some kind of epic machine invented by the Shee. Not just some boring pop-up!
I'm wondering if there will even be any mention of the Creatures past, or mention of the Shee. WAH!! D':
Having said this, I am just happy that Creatures is back. But still... my beating' heart.. I don't think it can take it. |

AthenaTrixl, regarding the changing of appearance, that was setup for a demo. They have stated that you won't have any control over a babies appearance until later in the game and even then it will be optional AND it will still be linked to the parents D-DNA.
About the layout, you've only seen the DEMO, details could be added later on. Not much can be done about the color or style choice, but your "lovely metal, technological, hard-ware feel" is not too common in the community......however even some of the major supporters of the C1/C2 "warmer colours" have expressed some dislike about the palette choice. Not much can be done. If you really are upset about C4, you can simply ignore it and keep playing C3/DS.

There's something that keeps coming up that seriously bothers me about C4.
It seems like everyone is assuming that Fishing Cactus intends to keep C4 closed to third-party development permanently.
That isn't the case, people. From the blog, I quote the following:
Fishing Cactus wrote: Don’t lose hope though; we have some ideas on how to open the game in the future...allowing users to produce and distribute content in the game and actually support that process.
Once the game has been out long enough and hopefully has been successful enough, FC intends on looking into ways that third-party content can be produced. Yes, it won't be there at the beginning, but it's not like we'll automatically know this game's scripting inside and out the minute it gets released anyway (heck, we're still learning things about the original trilogy). If FC gets enough support, the ability to develop for C4 certainly won't be far behind.
Sorry about the mini-rant there that may or may not have been said before, but I'm getting the feeling that people are assuming C4 will be ruined forever just because third-party content won't be there at the start. I'd be more worried about FC's handling of the AL aspect that makes Creatures what it is than not being able to make stuff for it right off the bat.

Ok, throwin in another two cents.
So we have established that there will be third-party developmet in the future, and I think that alleviates most of the fears people have...
However, I heard that FC will have some kind of screening process, kind of like what Nintendo did with the seal of approval stuff.
This is most likely a good thing, as it weeds out really bad/buggy player content and might help to improve the quality and compatiblility of stuff, but will FC ban certain controversial things like gay norns/torture?
It this good or bad?
Again, .

Where did Andrea Di Stefano talk about the screening process? All I can find is
Andrea Di Stefano wrote: @Dans, @Alex P. Twigg : indeed we’re looking at ways to bring that to the community (probably with a vetting process so that we can make sure users pay for quality content) but let us finish the game first and we’ll move on from there. It’s too early for us to make promises about what’s going to happen after the release but we’re writing everything down on our todo list
All that seems to imply is that we're counting our norns before they've hatched.

Just as long as it's clear when you're speculating wildly - otherwise we all end up like Chicken Licken. I mean, yeah, I'm a bit apprehensive too - the Cwiki's writeup of the original CDN seems like it might be apropos - but going to the source seems better than spreading panic.
The "sandbox" nature of Creatures has been important from the beginning - Steve Grand himself said about norns that they should be "Equally appealing to children and adults, men and women. Something you wouldn't be ashamed to keep on your office PC. Something a naturalist would want to study, a father would want to teach soccer, a granny to dress up and a complete b***ard to butcher mercilessly." If we're not sure Fishing Cactus knows this, then we should tell them.

Thank you Grendel Man!!
-rant-
I wish people would READ up on the topics that they are so desperately concerned about and have such strong opinions about. Maybe it's a product of the Information Age where they think all knowledge on a topic is all in one singular place and compressed into 1 or 2 statements.
Every time I get on here (the CC as a whole) there is at least 1 post/thread by some uniformed individual spreading doom and gloom, and there are official responses to the contrary.
And I am tired of having to repeat myself or read others correcting them, over and over and over again. To be honest, it's starting to grate REALLY bad. With everything else going on in my life I don't need other source of negativity and stupidity. So when I just don't show up for a while, you'll all know why.
There I've said it. No, it wasn't directed at anyone in particular. And that is all I will say on the subject.
-/rant-
That is a really nice quote Malkin! I'm glad you mentioned it. I don't foresee them censoring the third party content because of a touchy subject. An inappropriate subject for young children I could see, and since this is a forum for all ages I won't be specific, but you get my drift. And as it's been said, it's still too early to worry about policy when the game hasn't even been released yet. But it's a valid question and topic, what will and won't make it through their eventual screening process, we will just have to wait and see.

Silvak, uhh.. thank you for correcting my error on the DNA schtick. No, this isn't a product of the Information Age - this happens all the time "in real life" also. Not everyone has read the same things; it's actually harder in this age because there IS so much to root through, and it's always going to be the case that different people have read different things - some more than others, some less than others, all with different things to share. It's kind of the beauty of a forum to share all of these things... hopefully without hostility.
I understand your concern, but your latter response was very disconcerting. Should an issue such as this bother you to such an extent? Please try to chill: You aren't responsible for my, or anyone else's knowledge.
While I *am* afraid that C4 won't live up to my expectations, there is no way on Earth I'm not going to be buying it. And I really don't think that just because I didn't see what I hoped for in the demo, is a reason for me to hush about things I loved about previous chapters of Creatures.
I'm not really too bothered if my opinion isn't shared by many others. :/ I love the feeling that I got with old Creatures that all that stuff was created by the Shee and had some kind of "life" to it. I'm just sayin' - from a die-hard Creatures fan who was there from the start: That's just what I'm hoping for.
Peace. |

Don't worry guys. I think this team is really nice, and they want to make the game the best it can be. I'm happy that they're trying to listen to our suggestions, while we could have ended up with a development team that didn't care one way or another and made it into a completely different game.
Of course it's going to be a bit different, but we just gotta go with it and see what happens.
I suppose I'm being too much of an optimist, but I don't want to worry so much about it. They are being really open with ideas, and I'm glad of that.

AthenaTrixl, my -rant- was not directed towards you and especially not towards those who are newer to the CC, who don't know where to look for information. But there are several who comment on announcements with their statements and have clearly not read the announcement all the way through that they are commenting on. I'm sorry if you felt my rant was directed towards you.

I'm sure even if they do keep it closed to third party stuff people will hack it. After all there's hacked addons/cheats for Runescape even though the dev team has done their best to kill them. (And rightfully so, Runescape is too competitive a game for third party content. Creatures is totally different.)
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |

New Creatures 4 Blog Post - An official update from Fishing Cactus, at long last! There are two questions that have been posed to our community, since the developers have really tried to keep the players involved. Make sure to share some input: This gives them a better idea of what we've historically liked and disliked about the Creatures series. No one can say that Creatures 4 will be perfect, but I definitely like the level of involvement that we have in this game's development. Pretty screenshot, too!

Hey everyone, Fishing Cactus here. We're trying to gather some user stories about what made Creatures special for you. Drop by our blog when you have some spare time and share your greatest/worst experiences with the series.
Thanks!
@Gumbo Glad you like it The picture we posted is based on the in-game 3D model but the background is artwork. At the moment the actual in-game scene looks even better (running on PC) with more glow-y stuff but the background is still work in progress. |

Ooh, welcome to our humble forums andreast!
The picture of the hatchery looks great, I'm especially digging the floating islands in the background. The sleek design of the machinery looks very modern as well and really matches what I've seen from the Norns so far. Awesome work!
I've posted a huge rant on your blog, you probably noticed it. Hopefully I've provided some helpful insights and all that.

I'll propably still play mostly C1 (And C3/DS sometimes), but i'm hopeful about C4. The only things i've read/seen about it that i don't like is the colour palette and the in-game currency. I think some form of "agent shop" or similar is ok, since they need to make money out of the game after all, but if i understood correctly C4 will also have a purely in-game currency.
Resistance is futile. |

O M G
So it's time for my yearly pop in to the CC to look around and see if anything new is going on... and holy crap freaking C4!!!!!
And the devs are on these forums??! That's awesome.
That said.. I have some reservations. I am not at all digging the graphics. One thing I've always loved about C2/C3/DS were the stunning (albeit 2D) graphics. The "cartoonyness" and color scheme of this game are not at all appealing to me. I really hope the early demos/screenies will have significantly improved colors/textures in the final product otherwise I'll have difficulty getting in to this game. :/
Micro transactions? Eh.. gotta pay the bills somehow. As long as they follow through on the promise of allowing user-generated content then I can live with that. And keeping (or even building on) the dDNA concept is pure win.
Overall.. I'm cautiously optimistic for this. If they can polish the overall look of this game and realize they aren't marketing this to just kids but to people who were kids when the originals came out then they could very well have a winner on their hands.
Edit: Ok... the more tidbits I keep digging up the more and more excited I'm getting. I'm fairly certain the early look of the game from demos way back last year was just that... an early look. I am keeping the faith that they will make this game look beautiful.
Also, I'm glad they have delayed by half a year. More time to polish this baby up sounds good to me!! Wish they'd done that with C2 when it was new. Would have saved a lot of us some headaches (and heartaches ). |

I've just watched the teaser trailer. It's very cute in my opinion, but I still think some things could do with polishing up:
* The animation of the Norn playing with the ball
* The fact the Norns smile whilst it is being slapped violently across the face (masochist Norn perhaps?)
Apart from this, the game actually looks pretty good, and I think the Norns actually seem more alive than the previous games. They remind me of Mogwais from the movie Gremlins. |

Thanks for that link! I'm also pretty impressed, although I'm still not a huge fan of the punishment animation, as C-Rex said. I wish it was a little less violent, and that the Norns looked like they didn't enjoy it. Better yet, perhaps there are other forms of punishment that don't involve slapping!

Hmm yeah I wonder if you can still do something like tell the norn "yes" or "no" instead of petting/slapping it... Now that I think of it, did anyone notice the creatures don't seem to talk anymore?
