The only major concern left for me is the issue of user generated content. I suppose the issue for Fishing Cactus is whether they can maintain an income on official addons if the community is producing content for free.
When considering this issue, I would suggest that user generated content will increase their sales rather than reduce them. People will always buy official content because it is pretty much always better than user content, and user generated content keeps people playing because they like learning the skills to make content.
If C3 & DS hadn't had the development community, the franchise would have been dead long ago. So I hope they keep this in mind. |

New clip up in french.
Clip
I've not got sound at the moment, so don't know what is being said, and if it is in french then having sound would make little difference to me! It does show more gameplay than previous clips, including a baby norn!
The green norn is sure ugly in my opinion...where are it's ears!?! And on that note, they need to get tails back in there!

I'm not too crazy about that style of graphics....like many people have said, it's a little too simple and cutesy. I would like to see something more detailed and realistic, if you ask me. But as long as user-made metarooms are still an option, i guess this can be overridden.
The norn...he's cute, but I really hope he gets to keep that fur.

Hmm, seems like the possible variation between breeds is rather large. Big Norn was ugly though, but the amount of variation (see the silhouettes at the end of the clip) suggests that perhaps there's a chance everyone can breed a norn to their own taste.
The "Customize your baby norn' screen was scary, will the evolution be guided? But you could theoretically just click 'randomize' each time and let chance take its course.
The Norn shying away from the angry chameleons was a bit repetitive, but it was also a tutorial goal so this might be a 'scripted event', that's done a lot for demos.
As for the 3D, it is almost certain that Norns can now move freely, since any form of 'middle ground' between 2D movement and 3D movement is always more work than just allowing full 3D movement.
It's not that much more complicated for the norns themselves either, since 'Approach' and 'Retreat' are still the same concepts.

Freely yet very limited, if all they can do is walk back and forth on those tiny platforms, without ever being able to actually get anywhere by walking into the background. There is a static background, and it doesn't look like you can turn the camera around and look at stuff from different directions. The norn's world appears to begin and end with that platform, and not extend into the foreground. That's not full 3D to me, even if it's fully visually 3D.
I don't consider Little Big Planet to be fully 3D either. There are three different layers that you can jump between, but each of those layers are 2D in movement.
I think we're just talking about different things, though. I do of course realise that the models are 3D.
(I'm not saying any of this is a BAD thing, by the way. I love LBP. But it's not 3D in the way, say, Dragon Age II is.) |

I can understand french. There were a couple of interesting things said.
At the beginning of the video she said that the game will be coming out on January 13th, 2012.
There were some quest objectives she needed to fulfill, one of the was to use a toy ball, another was to chase the chameleons, she couldn't figure how to do it.
When the baby was born, she mentioned that the customization options were limited by the parents genetics. |

Thanks for the info qella...limited customisation through genetics sounds good to me. I would also asume the editor is the same as the previous one seen, and is unlockable later in gameplay.
As for the 3D with 2D feel, I think it is important at this point to keep the feel of the traditional game. There should be no reasons to prevent variations of this in the future of the game. |

No, it's not like Little Big Planet, there they limited sackboy to 3 planes to make level design quick and easy so people can make lots of fun things, and easily control sackboy. (He's named sackboy, right?)
If you watch the videos, the Norns can really walk in every direction they like, not just a bunch of planes.
The reason why the camera and map are focused on one plane is most likely because a 'side view' of the Norns is more personal, you can easily get up close without having to do complex camera maneuvers young or inexperienced gamers might have trouble with. It also makes having platforms more interesting and lets you find smaller objects more easily. This is a design choice that makes sense for a more 'casual' game.
While Creatures has always been a very deep game, the upper layer of this depth has always been very casual and easily accessible.

Also makes sense for an iOS game, as I think full 3D and a large world would be quite too much for a phone to handle... |

Although I don't understand much French, the latest video certainly offers some more details! I like how the Norns are coming along, even if they've taken a bit of a different direction. The earless Norn is kind of adorable... But I think I might be alone in that regard. Ha ha! Still, it seems nice to think we'll have a lot more appearance options, rather than relying on sprite sets.
The animations are also looking cute! A little repetitive, but that could change. All of the Norns were smiling the whole time, too, so more expressive facial expressions might be something in further development. I'm still not in love with the smacking, but that can't really be helped.
Can't wait for the news on the Fishing Cactus blog tomorrow!

Welcome to the forums qella
and copied from CTopia, re the French interview:
Spykkie wrote:

"welcome to dualgame.fr for a test play of creatures 4; a game (series) to which I was totally addicted when I was a little kid; in which you play with a type of tamagochi; a little character that's called a 'norn'; you have to help it live, help it have a family etc."
"This is a new version of the game that will come out 13th January 2012, and I will discover it (the demo) with you live. It starts by letting you choose between a male or female character"
"For now we'll choose a girl. You have the possibility to personalize it. It's fur is a little long as you can see on the screen. I can choose more or less stripes on the face, more or less fur, I'll choose not much fur and not many stripes (for mine). I can also personalize the eye color, the main color of my character (norn) or even have one randomly generated."
man, she talks a lot in a short amount of time XD;
0:56 to 1:50
"There we go. I'm done moding. Now I'll get started, I'll confirm (my norn). And I'm taken to a type of paradise island, which sort of look like/reminds me of what we had in the earlier versions of the game (series); in which i can scroll or zoom-out with the mouse." 1:15
"My character is right here so... I'll click on it. If I double-click... actually if i move the mouse up while holding the button down i can pick up my character (norn) and move it around on the screen. And now I got coins though I'm not sure what they are for... "1:30
"If I double-click on my character (norn) I have the possibility to stroke/pet it; or if make stronger movements I'll hit him, so this is really the most basic game play (game mechanics) of the game... He's sending me a ton of hearts, we're in a very child like world."
gawd she talks fast OTL
1:50 to 2:33
"There... so if we move uuhhh.... let's see. This explains that I have a shop, a small boutique, I'm not sure why... ...ah, I have objectives. This reminds me a bit of Facebook games; like hmm.. pyramid ville or city ville if you've played it."
"So already we see i have to care for it (the norn), i already did that, so now i can get a ball. I got little coins, the goal of the game is really to care for your character (norn)... we're really, for now we're kind of on tamagoshi mode for my objectives, and taking care of the character (norn)" 2:26
"so, the shop is here. Since i need a ball I'll buy one ball; so i understood the use of the coins, huh."
she's funny XD
2:33 to 3:12
"I have to interact with the object... so my norn he- he doesn't really understand right now, he doesn't seem very happy... so I'll try to have him play- ah, there we go, he's playing with the ball. there we go, so i filled the second objective.... uhhh, i'm gonna have to take a little nap; so i click.... i do a right click on the small...uhhh... the small bed, of my norn, and he will... rest."3:01
"There we go... wonderful. I'm making him take a nap. I wait. ... i wait some more."3:12
XD;
half way done OTL
3:12 to 4:35
"...oh! I have a second norn! So, be careful cause he, he seem mean apparently. so....there's mean- no, the norn is nice, but there are enemies, so he'll have to attack. ...so i have 2 options... how do i attack? so.. I'll have to..do.... ok, right, don't know what to do right now... hm....great...? " 3:51
"normally now i should be retrieving my other character(norn) who is probably done napping; and he has to know- to chase/drive away the chameleons; but i can't manage to chase the chameleons away " 4:07
"What am i actually supposed to do? alright so, before experimenting life... the miracle of life... ho gee! I had a baby! so... I don't understand anything anymore... here we go.. we'll make him ugly looking."4:35
4:35 to 5:40
"so as you noticed i can't personalize/change his colors, and you can see he looks like his parents.... uuuhhhhh.... so can make him more masculine r more feminine... we,ll make a girl again... i can,t really chose all of his characteristics because he basically looks like his parents." 4:57
"and... so this one here he's gonna play with the ball... so apparently chased away the chameleons huh... I'm not sure how i dd it because i didn't understand it... but uhhh... we have a tutorial that's still pretty well done for this demo... now i,ll get to use a little toy car, so.. I'll try to find it..."5:17
" .....aww, they,re kissing, it,s so cute. ...s this is the incubator; we find- we can really find everything that was in the first game: the incubator, the carrot machine to generate carrots and food for my norn... uhhh, i wonder if i have... well there you go, i think the demo is over now. Sadly i didn't get to test it that much.." 5:40
5:40 to 6:44
"so, like I said, we basically find all the aspects that made the first game successful: taking care of/managing your character's lives, protecting them against dangers; to pet them, to punish them..uhhh... making carrots, or even uhh, or even making them play with games/toys; making them have kids- right now i think they made a really accelerated version of the game for the demo, so we could see and discover a bit of everything; but, a little too quickly.
I like the idea of objectives, i like the new graphics and the customizable characters (norns). It's really nice. We'll have to see if we'll really get to uhh, if we'll get to navigate hmm, if we'll get to move outside of... outside of this rather limited space that we discovered here today." 6:25
"And see what the game itself will offer, I hope to get to know more about it soon. I'll sign up for the newsletter... so i can get more infos (information); and i hope to be able to come back to you, with more infos quickly; if i manage to use this Qwerty(English) keyboard. That's it so thank you for following us, and see you soon on dualgame." 6:44
and it cuts off when she kind of laughs a bit embarrassed because she's having so much trouble finding the keys on the English keyboard.
OTL I did it!!

Says, "...Mutations are possible, which will unlock new races[/breeds]. Some creatures will even carry viruses. The multiplayer aspect is limited, we can however send its creatures through Facebook, according to Bigben, while the developers refer to specific servers. .. Five basic environments are planned: the tree first, then the beach with a Norn "Aquarius" webbed and more sensitive to odors, Cave offers a more robust Norn caves, etc.. Bigben yield to the lure of the model freemium . The game will be free and fully playable as well. But you can buy - with real money - funds to speed up the game and unlock things faster, to get new races[/breeds], etc.. Bigben also includes a collector's box on a PC containing the first three games left and a figurine."

New news at the blog
In summary,
C4 dates back two years, Grendels/Etins may come along later, Android might be an option for later, it looks like there a two Norn figurine toys (male and female?), there won't be third party development until they'll looked into the possibililities more, "a boxed version will be released for PC shortly after the online release", the game is 3D, "there will be 5 environments to play on the game’s release. You saw the Treehouse, I can say there’ll be a “Hatchery” environment and more details about the other three will come in time" (although the French review let slip about a Beach scene with a webbed "Aquarius" Norn and a Cave, so one unknown left), "5 Norn breeds, two of which were available in the Gamescom demo. Each breed will be linked to an environment and will have a unique visual look", and "there will be two currencies in the game: Coins, which are gathered in-game with various interactions. Golden Eggs which are either received in the game on special occasions or bought in packs from the in-game Shop in exchange for real money."
Have a read through!

Might want to patch up that link there, Don - at the moment, there's a CCaves url in front of the actual link.
But, onto the actual blog article itself. After reading that, my hopes for the game have gone up significantly. Genetics and stuff are still there, and although grendels and ettins and the potential for game modding won't be there initially, it's nice to know that they'll (hopefully) show up eventually.
Only five environments sounds really limiting, but keep in mind C3 also only had five environments (assuming one counts the Bridge and Engineering as a single environment). Here's hoping a water area (and with it, an aquatic norn) is one of the five places that gets in at launch.
Edit: After watching the video a few pages back, I can definitely say I like the C4 norns more than the C3/DS ones already. The graphics are also fairly nice looking, as well. However, they still lack the same thought-provoking nature the previous games inspired. That is, they aren't the sort of graphics that you stare at for hours on end and leave you pondering about the history of the world and its inhabitants.

"We know the importance of it for the Creatures community but it’s simply not possible for us to support user-generated content on the initial release."
I'm not surprised given their "social game" model, which I don't fancy much. But that's going to simply cripple it. And here the game was growing on me... |

Okay I'm not sure I'm liking the looks of this so much anymore....
A "social game"? with LEVELS?!?! seriously idk how levels will attract players to a game. i guess i can still play creatively and freely but the game will still be peppered with "hatch this norn and buy this to get to level 10!" "congratulations, you have gotten the next level!" and coins popping out everywhere. The whole concept seems so... linear.
And the 2 types of currency is really off-putting too. I'm poor and a starving student. It always seems like a waste to spend real money to buy some pixels to add to a game. Best case scenario the objects will be bought cheaply as packs, and not individually.

Well guys, this is now a facebook game.
On a slightly higher level than farmville.
They tried to do something like this with ds, but it was self contained. I guess c4 will be reaching more people thru fb and such, but it loses a lot in that process i think, it becomes like spore where youc an trade creatures...
This thing needs to just come out so i can decide if i love it or hate it...
Also they are shooting themselves in the foot in my opinion by not allowing 3rd party stuff.
Hopefully they will later...

Man, I hated the "power-ups" of C2 and C3, and it looks like they're really going to play up this aspect and make the whole thing full of "quests". Dammit, if I want "quests", I'll go play an RPG. They're much better at it. |

The future is looking bright for Creatures.
The game is especially suited for poor and starving students, since you can get everything in the game for free if you just play more and longer, and students tend to have a lot of free time for gaming.
The "freemium" aspect doesn't tell us anything about how the game itself will be. There are a lot of awful social games out there such as Farmville and it's countless clones, but plenty of MMORPGs follow an identical model and are equal in quality to more standard MMORPGs like WoW.
Not allowing 3rd party content (at first) is a good move, since it allows them to release sooner. Adding support for 3rd party stuff without breaking the freemium aspect takes a lot of work. And the freemium aspect allows us all to have a free game, and allows them to continue to earn money for as long as there is an interest in the game, which forces them to continue making new addons.

I particularly like how it's implied that the game will continue to be worked on and added onto after its initial release. Of course, that depends on a good initial fanbase, but I like that Fishing Cactus isn't planning on winging something out the door with no future plans for it. Their responses to some of our major concerns were well thought out, too.
Grendels and Ettins are near the top of the list for future add-ons, and I had a feeling that the initial release would focus on Norns. But it's great to see that they've been reading our comments about these other species!
Third party development is also a tricky subject, yet it didn't sound like they were excluding it solely for the purpose of forcing us to accept official add-ons. Hopefully this element will make its way into a future update, yet I'm fairly confident that Fishing Cactus is listening to us.
I can't say that I'm super-duper excited yet, but my hopes continue to rise for Creatures 4!
