Oh yes, I'm certain I will be kept. I can only say that because I have been putting 100 percent of my energy into doing my job to the best of my ability, and have been my friendly self to everyone. ^^ So I'm pretty sure I'm a valuable asset at this point.

And Laura, it was rather intense; two of the birds had a dispute and i sort of moved them apart with my hands and a feather duster; luckily this was done before anyone could sustain any serious injuries. On another occasion just a few weeks ago, a carnivorous bird had captured and was attempting to eat a garter snake, and in the process had attracted the attention of another bird who wanted her prize; they began pecking over it, and luckily i was able to get it away from her and used my feather duster to take it to safety. After the snake was removed, the dispute ended.

And yes, it's a very busy and interesting job with all the people and animals to watch over! xD

Yeah, I'm sure he learned it from people somewhere... He was one of the oldest gorillas in captivity, possibly also living in captivity the longest of any in the world (the zoo made a pretty big deal about getting him)... He seemed to not just be copying either, he seemed to at least have some idea of what kinds of feelings it was meant to convey by the way he used it and how he acted. He paid no mind to them after that... They really are very smart, it's sad to see that they are so endangered.

I've read a lot about Koko, the gorilla who learned sign language and had a pet kitten, and her life with the lady who raised her. If you can get a hold of any books about her, they are really fascinating. There is some video of her on YouTube.

They form concepts a lot like us... like the first time Koko had watermelon, she called it by using the signs 'water' and 'fruit' together, without anyone telling her the name of it. She also got caught in a lie when she was living in a trailer with the woman, who at the time had a young chimp she was teaching sign language too... and one time the woman came back and the whole sink was ripped out of the wall, the sofa was flipped over, and things were broken and scattered all over the place, and Koko pointed at the chimp, said the chimp did it, and tried to act innocent.

But the most touching one was where the lady said how she smoked, and one time Koko found her cigarettes and was playing with them, and the lady, very concerned about the possibility of her eating them, took them away, told Koko that they were bad for her, and could make her very sick or make her die... and ever after that Koko would hide or destroy her cigarettes and her pipe if she found them, and refused to give them back or stop doing it... when she was asked why, Koko said that she didn't want the lady to die or get sick because she would be sad. She ended up quitting after that.

Oh, wow :o All of those stories are amazing. It really is astounding to think of how many species are sentient like we are. For instance, dolphins have recently been classified as "nonhuman people" in India and one other country because of their extreme, human-par intelligence, and have been banned there from being kept in captivity. That's amazing to me, and makes me very hopeful that we may be moving in a good direction for the respect of other species. ^^

I worked in the lorikeet aviary this morning; the lorikeets are still making nests all over the place, but I haven't seen any eggs yet. Because of the fact that it's nesting season, there has been a fair amount of aggression between birds, so that has needed to be kept in check. Donald, the grey-winged trumpeter I'd made friends with, came up to me today while i was sitting on a bench inside the aviary and began grooming my arm as if I were another bird! It was so sweet; every time I would sit down, he'd hop right up and resume his preening of me. However, I quickly learned that even though I was not touching him, I should not let him groom me in front of guests; one would not think so, but apparently watching a bird groom his friend makes strangers compelled to touch him. So, from now on, I'll only let him do that when guests aren't around. XD;

In the afternoon I worked the stingray exhibit. All day it had been hot, sticky, and threatening of rain, but suddenly, as soon as I returned from washing dishes after the feeding, the skies unzipped and a virtual monsoon ensued. It was quite scary, actually; the rain was coming down so fast that the paths were more like streams, and lightning even hit a few places in the zoo. No one was hurt, to my knowledge, but of course we had to mandate that guests keep their hands out of the water while lightning remained present in the area. Luckily, at the end of my shift, a coworker was kind enough to give me a ride back in a golf cart. When I got back to the discovery center (the education guides' break room) I FINALLY SAW THE PEACOCKS!! xD ... That's huge for me because for the entire three months I've been working there, I have been hoping beyond hope that I would get to see one of the two free-roaming peacocks... but never have. Until now! Because of the rain, the two magnificent creatures were huddled under the awning of the discovery center. They looked like some kind of celestial being with all of their shimmering complexity. I kneeled next to them, watching for a few minutes, and then went inside to clock out. Apparently, they do that whenever it rains like that, and will sleep there at night in the summer. I would love to be able to take care of them one day! It was a wonderful day! ^^
