I really hope they make it with in a year or two. I don't want to rush them, but I'd hate it if they took too long |

Yo there Moe.
I'm really curious how this will pan out, putting it out as freeware is a *great* idea however.

Gameware are probably not going to be fully involved in the game, just approving it.
Fishing Cactus will be coding it, and BigBen will be the publisher for both the new title and the old games in Europe.

I'm excited for the new game, but I also have my fears... I used to be a big fan of the Petz series, and once they sold the rights to Ubisoft, they made one more game that was true to the series, Petz 5. After that they completely revamped it to be a fluffy, cutesy, watered-down version targeted towards tweens. It upset me a lot... I hope Creatures doesn't meet the same fate. |

I keep thinking about Petz 5, too. I wouldn't say it went downhill after that, though. Although I never played the games that came after it, even Petz 5 had a lot of annoying features (like having to win everything) and some of the new graphics features kind of sucked (like elements that didn't change with weather/daytime, leaving bright pixellated borders around everything). Great concept, not so great execution.
I have a hard time seeing a mobile game as a "sequel" for Creatures, though. I mean, look at the Playstation version of Creatures. It doesn't have a lot of the features we expect in a Creatures game, but nobody considers it a sequel per se, or claims that it "ruined" Creatures.
Not that I'm saying that's what I think it will be like, though. If the article is anything to go by, I expect this new game will be a bit closer to the standard than what I've heard of the PS Creatures game.

At long last! I almost cried when I found this out! Man, its been, what, 10 to 11 years since the last game came out? I cant wait! Oh and I wonder what the collectors set will come with? An artbook or plush perhaps? Guess we will have to wait to find out!

It looks like they've updated the Wallpaper with a logo too now:

Im just a little worried. i mean, all of us have to be just a little. However, this company sound slike they are pretty big fans themselves, so I believe they will keep everything true to the series still intact. Hopefully there will be more details at E3.

[BluesNews.com] were able to confirm that the free-to-play game will be microtransaction-based, though "most of the content will be entirely free."
Hmm, I wonder what that means, with "microtransaction-based" being small charges.

This makes me slightly concerned - however, it probably just means that you have to pay a couple of bucks for an extra breed/metaroom, like the norn packs from Gameware. |

Can I just say that this forum is the only place in the Community that people seem to be expressing joy at this news... I don't know why so many others are so ambivalent about it (well actually of course I understand why) but this is the event we've been waiting for! For a decade now! This is it!
As for the quality of the games, I really hope these developers are already familiar with us and what we want and expect from a fourth title. We are the established audience for this game. They should already have some sort of idea of what we want. And judging by the fact that they've said they're going to be true to the original games I think we have every reason to be overjoyed right now!

Everyone pray to whatever deity you belive in that the game will contain alife!
(and well, if your an athiest go colect some 4-leafed clovers)
I so hope they DON'T make it for Iphone cause' it would STINK!
I would like an Epic new creatures game with adventures in it. Sadly though it wont be as good because Steve won't be a programmer..

So I have a question regarding "licensing". Fishing Cactus is licensing the Creatures title/series, do they have access to all the original source codes, concepts designs, product, ect? So if an engine or something had been in development (yes I understand they likely weren't, but hypothetically) would they have access to it and could build off that? Or do they have to create everything themselves?

tbh i wouldnt be half surprised if it was running off the DS engine, but, who knows, we'll see in the coming months.

I'd actually be O.K. with it being on the D.S. engine, as long as that meant it was true A-life and they did a good job on the new content. |

I had got the impression they were coding their own product, especially as it has to support iOS too. So I don't *think* they have the source, but I don't know.

Don - iOS under the hood is actually just OS X - they could get the Lakota port of the DS engine to run and build a new game from there, or they could start from scratch, as you said. However, a DS based game is not an impossibility because there are both Linux (which Android is built on top of) and Mac ports of DS. |

Don

|
6/1/2011 | |
Gameware themselves don't have any OS X code to supply them with, as Kutoka's Mac port was their own work under a different licence.
So to create iOS and Windows versions from the DS engine Fishing Cactus would have to use the Windows source and re-port the Linux version to Mac OS X, and then make any necessary modifications to both and add in all the touch screen functionality.
Due to the complexity of this and the age of the code, I am betting it'll be all new

Oh, that makes perfect sense now - I can't imagine them wanting to do it all again if they could just as easily make a new (and hopefully improved) game. |
