Lexophiles seem to be everywhere and they typicially don't just love word games, phrases and word history; they can also love languages.

That's what this topic is all about. Whether you're fluent in 5 languages or only learning your second, this is your place to come and learn, teach and practice with your fellow CCavers.

I'm planning to take Japanese in the spring at school! Did I mention I'm making a language of my own?

Heh, I've already memorized more than half of the hiragana characters.

That's very cool, Ilaezha. :D I'd be happy to practice Japanese with you when you start. I need to brush up, anyway. XD

Aww yeah, I'd love to learn more languages. Personally, I speak 3 fluently, and understand 2 more.

If someone is learning Spanish or wants to learn I can help, I would like to learn a bit more of French, I haven't read or spoken it in 5 years though.

I also speak dutch, but I don't think anyone's interested in that.

I am a native german speaker. I learned english through... ordered by the time I started: video games, school, internet. It explains my awful grammar and lax usage of swearwords, though. Well, not fully actually. In german I am lax with swearwords as well.

Had to do french in the last 3 years. Was a catastrophy. I can say that I am a pencil, but much more did not stick in my head.
I guess that is enough if I ever get lost in france. I say I am a pencil, get into a nuts house and I have all I need. Food, a sleeping place, a toilet and tons of happy pills.

Hahaha man, I wouldn't even be able to say that, I forgot what 'pencil' is in French and have been thinking a good while on it.

I remember stylo is pen. XD Je suis un (pencil), I guess. :P I might be interested in Dutch one of these days since I have a few friends in Holland, though. Not now, though. Two languages at once is more than enough for my plate. XD

I was trying to learn Japanese but I put it down last summer when going back to college last fall.

I can read the basic hiragana still, but got rusty with katakana. I know very basic grammar and some phrases due to being exposed to the language via media for years and years, haha. But that's mostly it.

Oh blimey. I tried to think of the French for "pencil" and my brain gave me "karandash" - I think that's the Russian. Not bad considering I haven't spoken it for about 15 years! :D

Did French at school, and am still appalled to think I could learn anything for 5 years and still not be able to do it! At the moment I'm studying Welsh again, which really is proving rather difficult. I've spent about a year doing lessons, on and off; I still can't speak Welsh, but I can now speak English with a good Welsh accent, which is harder than you'd think.

That's exactly the reason my sister learned those languages. XD I'm glad my post helped, though. They say the best way to learn is to just surround yourself with the language you want to learn.

Je parle francais presque courrament, et si quelqu'un veut pratique leur francais avec moi, je l'aimerais! :D

(in other words... I speak French if anyone wants to converse in it with me or practice theirs with me! :D In fact, I would love love love that! I haven't had anyone to speak French with in a while. XDD)

I also used to be nearly fluent in Japanese, but have since gone a bit out of practice. I'm still good, though~ >w<

I'm available to help tutor anyone who needs help in those languages. :3

Err... I'm the only one here learning Sindarin aren't I? xD
(Elvish language.) Haven't gotten very far yet though. ;)

I was going to learn Japanese... So I could play some games that where in Japanese, but I gave that up pretty quickly! xD

Lol, the only language i'm really interested in learning is Sindarin. I am a strange LOTR obsessed person! >.<

I'm currently working on becoming a Polylinguist in a sense. I probably have the name wrong.
Still working on learning Japanese just for the purpose of UTAU and such.
Currently take Spanish classes
I have fun learning German and French

And I do know English

Along with that, I love semi-dead languages. I'd probably love to learn Sumerian if I could, along with Latin. I have a grasp on Latin, but its more above the average for the world populace. I can't compete with someone who takes a class in it!
Is Scottish Gaelic a dead language so far?

Ah, I did Latin O-level. That was fun, for some value of fun. Actually, it would've been better if we'd actually used it as a live language, rather than just translating stuff. It's only when you try to speak a language that it starts making sense. It did help with learning Russian though - the languages have a similar structure.

I'm more fond of writing systems than I am of languages - that was how I originally got into Russian. And the Elvish alphabet was good. And runes. :) Tibetan is beautiful too, if a bit pointy.

i don't think scottish gaelic is a dead language since there are still people that speak it in Scotland but i don't think its taught anywhere unless you do a specialised class for it

Exactly! I'm taking IB Level SL Spanish, and my teacher is a native speaker. She really loves languages, and has explained to us not to translate to english, but to try to understand it, to make even better connections.

I think Scottish Gaelic is hard to learn, and would be hard to find people who speak it. Its why I think of it as becoming like Latin. Since I am Scottish, I think I'd like to learn some eventually.

I think learning Sindarian is relevant. This is a language learning thread, after all. XD

Still, I think my brain needed a break from language learning today. After flip-flopping between Russian and Spanish all day yesterday it seemed like my brain started to lose its grasp over English today. Poor language part of my brain just about shut down. XD

A good recommendation for language learning - if you can, see if you can find a radio or tv station broadcasting in the language you're trying to learn. You won't understand many words at first, but that's not really the point - you'll be developing an 'ear' for the language.

Yeah, watching anime with subtitles is extremely helpful with that! I know it's not exactly a good idea to try learning from anime since they use a lot of slang and casual terms, but it helps to get a good ear for Japanese. It also helped me learn how to pronounce everything correctly.

Yup. I got a little bit of a leg up with Japanese, being surrounded by it, but I'm finding that listening to native Russian speakers is helping me out a lot for the listening portions of my lessons.

You're welcome to share them, if you like. This is about languages and learning them so it seems relevant to me.

Also, Rosetta Stone is doing a terrible job of teaching me Russian Grammar and Spelling rules. I need help. D:

So, my mom's native language isn't English so she learned by watching Bugs Bunny with me when I was a baby. My mom also says reading children's books helped her grasp English.

As such, I've started reading Russian news sites now that I'm comfortable with Cyrillic. It doesn't give me the opportunity to hear the language but it gives me context to go with the words anyway.

I'm neglecting my Spanish lessons a little but it really bothers me that I'm not making any real progress in Russian. :C

All that aside, what are you all doing or what did you all do to help you accelerate your language studies?

I'm sort of trying to learn Japanese and kind of failing...
I only really know how to say "my name is", good morning/afternoon/night and some greetings.
I find it difficult because as many normally-spoken sentences seem to lack equivalent words (ones that do exist) that would be important in English. Particularly a 'you' or 'me' so that it's unclear who's doing what.

Well, message me and I'll help you if you'd like. :3
There are actually many words for "you" and "I/me" - the most widely used are "anata" for "you" and "watashi" for "I/me". There are many other forms of those two words, tailored to the connotations you'd like to express, but those two can be used anytime. Also, the main verb in a sentence can be conjugated to express who is doing the action.

^What I mean its, they aren't always used in a situation where it would seem necessary.
But I guess in some cases in English it's common to leave out the 'you' or 'I' when we 'shouldn't' but that isn't exactly taught from the get-go.

But I guess tone rather than specifics is more important at this point.
