Strangeo Forum Crafting thread   1 | 2 Rha   8/17/2013 So I noticed there's quite a lot of creative people here, and I'd like to know about what artsy things you guys like to make, maybe discuss certain materials and tecniques. For example, I like to work with fimo or sculpey, and I'm trying out different materials to make poseable dolls, keychains, figures, etc.   Slohse   8/17/2013  2 I like to make jewelry. I basically just don't have the investment, space or time. XD For poseable dolls, I'd like to recommend aluminum or steel wire, depending on what strength you want. Wire can be reinforced by twisting it. You can wrap it with polyfiberfill to make it soft. Have you seen Creatures of Nat? She details her process in her shop description. I've made a few poorly made dragons, and a few nice ones, out of this stuff back when Michaels had coupons for it. I've also made a few necklaces in the past. The best I made was a piece of Lapis Lazuli wrapped in wire. About the only crafty thing I've done recently is make a slightly poseable dinosaur that falls apart when you even stare at it. Turns out play-dough isn't the best for poseable things, especially when it's been laying around for a while. I'd take pictures, but I can't find my mom's camera. The Mobula Ray - My Creatures blog   Wee Scrivener Trell     8/17/2013  1 Simply put, I like to create. I like to sew, paint, write... I even write lullabies from time to time. I've often wrote little stories to post here, though I've many more that not even my mum has seen. I can't just read a story, I much rather tell them; I want to imagine worlds of wonder, filled with life and love and adventure. Ohh! Everything from harrowing epics of brave knights of lore to charming little fairy tales, spinning tales like a spider weaves a web, weaving and winding words to fit into a wonderful world of whimsy. Fantasy my paint, and the sky is my canvas~ And painting- Oh how I love to paint! I'm no Picasso, I'll tell you that, but nothing sets my fluttery heart at ease more than swirling the colours into something magical. I'm rather quirky with what I can paint, too. I can't paint people, and I can't paint man-made objects. I can paint nature, but only nature in it's purest form. Don't ask me to paint a bowl of fruit. I'd rather paint it on a tree. Mind, I can draw certain figures. I cartoon from time to time, and have a few comic strips in the works. One in particular, is just so much fun. It's a quirky land filled with skeleton men, living rag dolls, and pale maiden ghosts that wander through grave yards and briar wood trees. It's not creepy in the slightest, goodness no! It plays up the theme of death into something quite charming. Skully's just a fun loving guy, Mortis has a heart of gold (figuratively speaking). Dolly wants to play games, not steal your soul, and Great Uncle Grimm is just a big softy who loves kids, with pockets full of candy and stories to tell! No need to fear the Reaper here! And of course, I love to sew. Mainly plush, of course. The very first plush I ever made was a rat pirate doll for Haven. There was no particular rhyme or reason to it, I just sat down on day and decided, "I'm jolly well going to sew a doll!" I'm still a beginner artisan, working with scraps of old clothes and a needle and thread. I make my own patterns for the most part. Perhaps I'll share some one day! Trell "Holy crap in a casket!"   Ilaezha   8/17/2013  1 I also do Sculpey stuff (charms, useful objects, little containers for beads/small parts, figures), I paint (usually only digitally), draw, write, make and fix jewelry, and work with many other kinds of 2D art. I Copic markers! Lately I've been experimenting with clothing/fashion and cosplay stuff. Right now my mom and I are making a purse for me that I designed. Last winter I made myself and my boyfriend a Homestuck scalemate plushie. That was really hard. I sewed my plushie's foot on backward and my boyfriend's plushie's head on crooked. I also seem to be cursed with sewing machines, but I think I'm getting better. I also love cooking/baking up new stuff. It's not really a crafty thing but it is a creative pastime.   Peppery One Papriko   8/17/2013  1 I play too much minecraft. Photosynthesis...   Spykkie   8/17/2013 Get off the mine, and get on the craft! I love to make plushies, it just takes me a while to get around to actually making them (I make my own patterns). Materials for certain projects can also take a while to find (like long yellow faux fur, that took forever to find >.< ) My advice for plushie making, if you're missing a specific fabric that you can't find locally, give Ebay a check. You never know, if you check back every few weeks, you may find just want you need at an acceptable price. I really should try to get around and finish those plushies i planned for last year...XD; Work gets in the way of all the best things! I have tried a lot of different crafts too, Darby, but I give up soon when it doesn't work out well, I'm envious of your positiveness :3 I've also made a plusie once, it turned out well, surprisingly, as I didn't use a pattern and I have no idea how to :p I sort of make one thing and then try another tecnique, and when I want to keep on doing something so much time has passed I forgot how haha. Kezune, that second web page is super handy, thanks! The first url however doesn't work : ( I'm now making two poseable dolls. As you can see I used the tecnique of 'I don't know what I'm doing'. I've tried to work with air drying clay but it's super fragile or at least the kind I find here, you can't make thin pieces with it. Aahhh I love to start cosplays but then I hit a wall and they stay unfinished forever </3 I'm working on a Jade (homestuck) cosplay but it's sitting there gathering dust.   Lollipop Lord C-Rex     8/17/2013  1 Wow, those are looking good Rha! I personally don't really do much craft, unless you count 3D sculpting programs. I'd never think to create dolls like that; they'll pose wonderfully! Fimo also works really well with a wire skeleton when it's baked onto it. Anyway, keep up the great work, I'd love to see what they look like finished! Those fingers are amazing!   Rha   8/18/2013 Ah yes, I have a thing for fauns : p Surprisingly I saw that movie two days ago for the first time, I really liked it, but wonder how many people went to see it with their kids thinking it was a nice fairytale haha. Thanks, I had some problems making the hands, one burnt when baking, and the idea was making them poseasble but they're too fragile. I don't recommend trying to make poseable hands on such a tiny scale.   Mioonktoo     8/20/2013 Oooo... So neat! I wish I could do something like that, but I have a terrible time staying focused on any one thing long to complete it! Its difficult for me to keep myself from starting another thing before I'm done with what I'm working on, (My oldest unfinished project is a scarf that I started knitting in the sixth grade, over 10 years ago! xD) although it'd help if I didn't consistently lose about half of them during moves! Thankfully, I've been able to find some of them again, one of which I've been trying to complete for the past two years. For fear of stretching the post (and page!), I link it from tinypic: Some kind of punk-ish pendant. The front is on the right half, the back is on the left. Until now, I didn't even think that I had put the pictures together a bit backwards. It originally started out as one of those dyed birthstone pendants you see in gift shops but it broke in half while I was on "vacation." I just wanted to wire it back together, but someone handed me that little fuse thing in the middle and you pretty much see the end result. Its just a bit too heavy for the cord that its on and putting it on a chain just doesn't seem right in my opinion. Leather/suede feels just about right for it since I don't have allergic reactions to that material but beyond that, I'm not sure how I'm going to go about it. But that is just one the things that this "Jill of All Crafts, Mistress of None" has floating around. My mum is nearly the same way, only she manages to finish her's. From the depths of Deep Lurkspace I emerge... And suddenly can't remember what it is I came up for.   Rha   8/20/2013 Ah, I have the same problem, and if I finish something it's usually too fragile to sell. That's a nice pendant, I like the fuse, gives it a steampunk look.   Air Guitarist kezune     2/4/2014  1 I thought we had a crafting thread so let's revive it. I started needle felting earlier this week and this'll be my third project. I've since added wings and am trying to find ways to paint it besides adding layers of colored roving. In any case, I'm having loads of fun. I might just buy some polymer clay to add some small details but after this thing's finished, I'm putting it up for sale. What are you guys working on? I'd love to see more photos as the project progresses; I think dragons are some of the most intricate and beautiful mythical creatures.   Air Guitarist kezune     2/6/2014  2 I finished the tail, the front legs, the back legs and the front feet on the dragon (still no back feet) and I started on the wings buuuut I needed a break from needle felting. So I finished up a little frog today instead. I'd actually made all the parts for it last week but the eyes only arrived yesterday. Alas, the eyes were too small for the giant frog parts I made! My mom loves frogs, especially the bright, toxic tropical ones. I am learning how to make crochet meshes, so I can wiggle crochet up some hot pads. Unfortunately, my chain stitches are much looser than my other ones, so my grid keeps ending up very rectangular. 8^\   Air Guitarist kezune     2/6/2014  1 Practice, practice, practice. Or you could adjust the pattern. I have really long chains too so you can generally omit one or two depending on the length you need. Most patterns call for ch3 to match a dc but I can get away with ch2, for example. Updated Rehosting Policy[/title]   Feddlefew   2/6/2014  1 I could probably get away with it for this pattern, but for some of the other patterns I have you have to crochet the doubles into the chain stitches. ETA: The lady at our local yarn-craft store recommended changing hook sizes between chains and other stitches.
