Zither is a Z-name (26th generation) from my original Grendeltail colony, though she has since been moved to a new world to start the next run of Grendeltails. She is a very good example of what the higher gen Grendeltails have evolved into - obsessive about a lot of things, but most noticeably, manky. She'll be okay if you don't allow her access to alcohol, though - you'll just notice that whenever another Norn complains of being hungry for protein she'll tell them to 'maybe eat manky'.

The higher gen Grendeltails have a number of weird mutations, though, so if you're interested in genetics she and the others I'll be posting are probably worth a look. I may have overlooked another sprite type she uses but it won't be anything that didn't come with C3/DS. In this export she's two hours old and an adult - plenty of breeding time left if that's what you're interested in.

In that case, I'll spend some time looking through the newest ones to find some interesting specimens, and I'll make a pack of the egg agents so you can make your own A names. I think I may have a few exported of the actual A names I originally used, too, but many of them wolflinged and died before I exported again. (I wish making copies of Norns was as easy as on C1 and C2!)

Believe it or not they all started just from me discovering EasyGMS and playing with it. XD Each of the base 'colors' has somewhat different modifications, and the later gens are the jumbled result of putting all the base 'colors' together at the beginning of a run and leaving them alone. I actually have no idea if all the 'colors' made it into the line or not. I know for sure that indigo, lampblack, and either vermillion or crimson bred, but I don't know if viridian or the other 'red' shade made it before dying. The A names were a little flaky because the genetic changes were raw, new, and untested, whereas the Z names and beyond have had time to let their genes get mixed around by breeding and tested by wolfling conditions.

That 'Ettin Home' thing has spread far and wide through the current generations, and they're a little more interested in wandering now if you don't let them form big groups. And the serious manky obsessers are now a minority since I introduced alcohol to my world and the result was that the ones with the strongest version of the manky gene(s) drank themselves to death. (They didn't die of alcohol poisoning, though, they died of starvation from being unwilling to do anything but stand around drinking - they didn't even seem to get particularly drunk a lot of the time).

Oh, just so you know, I've done a little more looking at their genes directly, and they are in fact immune to death by creature slapping. They get fear, anger, and a little pain from being hit by other creatures, but no Wounded, meaning they take no actual damage and will never die from being attacked. So you don't need to worry about Grendels with them, and if you like you can actually keep them together, although you might need to pay closer attention to your lines if you do. I had one recent Grendeltail mutate randomly to have a Grendel's head, and because she was from the jungle colony on that world I was afraid she might actually be part Grendel so I had to check her lineage closely to be sure she was in fact a pure Norn mutant. (I expected that sort of thing to happen a lot more than it actually does. I've only had a few mutants lose the Grendel tail and revert to a Norn type tail, which I immediately exported from the lineage so they didn't pass on the mutatiion, but the mutant Grendel head was really weird looking. XD)

I'm actually really enjoying the grendetails and I would be interested in a "pack" of the most recent generation....especially including any oddballs. I'm also interested in the first generation grendeltails. So yeah, I would be really into having a few sets of these! Thank you for making them!

They are definitely fairly self-sufficient as Norns go. These guys survived 26 generations worth of feral and wolfling existence, so the most self-destructive types have -generally- been bred out. But if you had just Zen and Zither alone I'm not at all surprised you had trouble breeding them. Zen's peculiarities make him a much less willing breeder than average. Given three children, though, it's possible that breeding shortened her life span somewhat. You might want to try running her again without allowing her to breed to see if she lives longer, just for comparison's sake.

If you're interested I can upload more Norns from this breeding group - more Z-names, the A-name types that the group started with, specimens from where the run currently is (they're up to 30+ gens) - anything you like. Just let me know.

In my game, I imported only Zither and Zen and she was pretty good at taking care of herself. She stayed on the lowest level of the Capilita and picked the carrots and fruit for the most part. Zen paced in front of the Ettin Home Spray perfume. I had to use Cupids Lyre to get them to breed, mostly because of Zen, but they have three kids.

For example a very common thing is they suddenly wander away from the group and keep walking until they hit a corner or a door. Even if the door is visible to them and able to be opened (I sometimes hide the doors if I want to isolate breeding groups) they usually do not open it. Instead they stay in that spout, sometimes walking against the wall (I have 'never hit the wall' enabled so they don't actually kill themselves against it, but they do their best), but more often just sort of sitting or lying around, talking to themselves now and then. Sometimes small groups of younger Norns collect around them because of standard Grendeltail clustering, but the old ones typically ignore them. Death by starvation tends to result well before they'd've died of old age. They also do stuff like browsing on detritus (the younger ones do not usually do this, other than the typical occasional curious 'whoops' you see now and then in any Norns). Sometimes they even - seemingly on purpose - drown themselves. If they manage not to do any of those things and continue to eat they can make it five hours or so. Maybe even more, theoretically, but I've never known it to happen.

No, no, I believe you! I'm just saying that is indeed unusual for the lineage. They tend to reach adult fairly quickly but then stay adult for two hours or so. Old usually hits between 3-3:20 or so, give or take. There was one branch of the lineage where several of them died precisely at 3:48 for reasons I've never been able to figure out, but for the most part they usually survive another hour or so, becoming Ancient somewhere in the late third or early fourth hour and dying in the late fourth hour. With that said deaths from old age per se are kind of rare, which is why I said they usually live about four hours - when they get Old and Ancient, the senility behavior in them tends to result in death.

So if she was Ancient by three hours, it was sooner than usual. Did she breed? I don't remember if they still have those breeding stress genes or not. I don't -think- they do, but it's possible I forgot to remove them in this strain. I did several different colors of 'basic' Grendeltail and she's the product of many generations of mixing so who knows what she's ended up with.

No, it was definately ancient. She changed color twice and I checked. Zen (who was imported first) was still an adult.

Ancient? That is a bit quick. Their typical lifespan is about four hours. Old would've been more normal.

I don't know if its normal for grendeltails, but she was ancient life stage an hour after import.
