Okay! There seems to be a lot of forgotten history regarding the development of later improved genomes in Creatures 2... such as the differences between Canny Norns, Akamai Canny Norns, Kannova Norns, and others. I'm looking into figuring out a more coherent timeline between genetic iterations in the community.

Canny and Nova Subterra came way before anything else, although there were some early minor improvements to the Cannies such as the Akmai and Worker (?) Cannies. Kannova Norns came at least 10 years later IIRC. The Creatures Wiki is a good place to start if you haven't already scoured it for info. This page is a good place to start because it gives you a rundown of what exactly went wrong with the original genome to necessitate so many improvements. |

I've done a lot of looking around on the wiki since getting into C2, and I'm struggling to put together a coherent timeline of when breeds were created, what they were based on, and what they are specialized for/best at (wolfling runs, raw intelligence, "livability," etc.)
This document seems to have a lot of good research put into it, but it is tragically lacking sources!

Maybe just try looking at the dates on the genome files? Bastian’s anti-interbreeding campaign might also have some helpful material.

All of alt.games.creatures seems to have been archived. Sifting through the old posts there is probably your best bet for finding sources/dates, if you haven't been doing that already. It was the main hub of activity back when NS and Cannies were developed, other than chatrooms which have been lost to the sands of time. Obviously you could try reaching out to the original creators but, as with most of these things, I doubt you'd have much luck.
Nova Subterra Norns are supposedly difficult to breed, as you will have read. This seems like it would make them particularly Iill-suited to Wolfling Runs but I'm not sure which breed(s) are supposed to be good for those. To be honest C2 itself isn't exactly ideal for Wolfling Runs what with its stability issues. As for intelligence... well I'm sure the creators of each breed would claim theirs is more intelligent. Getting a selection of different breeds together and devising some tests for them could be interesting if you decide to go down that route. It looks like Venithil did run some tests but didn't really document them. (Anyone know if Venithil is still active in the CC?)
I don't have anything more to add so I'll just wish you luck with this project. It's nice to know people still care about C2, it is a good game in spite of its flaws.
Edit: And what Malkin said! |

Thanks a lot for the words of encouragement, ylukyun! I'm definitely going to do lots of experimentation with some of the popular C2 genomes (as well as the vanilla c256 genome).
I'm going to try hand-raising Nova Subterras to see if I can overcome their breeding issues (I actually like hand-raising norns, so if that works out, Novas may be best suited to my preferred playstyle).
Even so, Cannies seem the most "robust" and do quite well in wolfling runs, from what I've heard.

Okay! New info!
It appears that v1.2 Cannies and Akamai Cannies are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS! Thanks to Verm, over on Discord, it seems that Akamais are slightly improved over Cannies, having released a few months apart.
Worth noting, I think!

Based on my limited observations so far, it seems that Canny norns (v1.2) tend to act more "vanilla" (as in, the c256 genome that ships with C2) than Nova Subterras, which seem notably different in their behaviors... will continue to test! ![[evil] [evil]](/images/smilies/evil.gif)
