Hey all,

Yesterday I finally released the BorgNorn that I have been working on for AGES. I thought it a good idea to post here, so if there are any questions or bugs, I have a central location to go to.

The first question from @CosmiSynth was how the evolving genome works.

So when installed, the BorgNorn script loads two copies of the same BorgNorn genome into two slots of the main control panel agent for storage.

When assimilation occurs, the first step is that the Assimilator's genetics are spliced with the second slot, which is the evolving genome. This genes of the Assimiatee are then spliced with the evolving genome, which results in the new assimilated creature in the world.

This means that only BorgNorn that have successfully assimilated other creatures get there genetics included in the evolving genome.

If you turn off the evolving genome option, the Assimilatee's genes only get spliced with the original genome in the first slot.

If you ever want to reset the evolving genome in a world, you could remove and reinject the BorgNorn 2 agents.

@CosmiSynth also asked about missing chemicals from assimilated creatures.

So just to preface, I am no genetics wizz. I got done what I needed, but my understanding of how the genetics and how those genes act when spliced is limited.

Now, the main additions genetically is the new organ, a Neural Transponder. This organ is the parent to the emission of both Nanites and the teleportation energy. The Nanites are a chemical flag that says if a creature is part of the hive, and the teleport energy is required for, you guessed it, teleportation.

There is an instinct to hit norns when angry, as the hitting of a creature is what triggers assimilation.

If you wish to experiment editing the borgNorn genome is a good way to go.

There are also chemical reactions where Contraceptin reacts with Testosterone and Oestrogen to produce nothing. This is how breeding is supressed. I didn't want to just supress Testosterone and Oestrogen directly, I wanted there to be a chance for this trait to evolve out.

One stim change in the BorgNorn is that they get angry when they hear another creatures voice. Ideally, I would want this to only occur when they hear a none BorgNorn, what there wasn't a clean way to code this or work it into the genetics.

BorgNorn also get lonely quickly and want to be near other creatures. This could result in a Hive of BorgNorn that are just super angry and hit each other all the time.

To combat this issue, anger in the Hive's anger is chemically supressed when Assimilation is turned off OR when there are no creatures in the world other than BorgNorn. So you can have a super happy and docile hive when no other creatures exist, but if you add a new creature, they will get angry pretty quickly.

I liked this solution as it mirrored the behaviour of the Borg from the film/TV shows.

As a final note, I am happy for people to edit and play with the genetics, scripts and sprites as you like. Tweak them, change them, make them your own and share as you desire.

If I have a moment, I will add any source files of the code in an update to the ZIP so people can poke around.

According to Verm in the discord the reason the script goes into an infinite loop is because it isn't defined what the norn should do when a pod is free but inactive...They are activated by clicking on them, but I didn't know that!

Ah yeah got it. I will get this fixed.
Thanks!

Oh this is fascinating! I've not tried them yet, but after reading what you've been saying i'm wondering if there may be a way to make them better at discerning hive mates from other creatures using the sensorimotor lobe, but it would not be a perfect solution and take some creativity to pull off.

Perhaps something more targeted could be done? Like adding input to a special lobe when looking at creatures with the nanite chem in their bodies.

Messing with the brain, or the genetics beyond a basic level, is something I don't have enough knowledge to tackle.

I would be happy to work in tandem with someone on this, or just be interested to see what other people can come up with!

Ideally what I had wanted was a way to add a new voluntary action in stead of just hooking into the hit action, but decided if I didn't just wrap something up, I would never release them!

I could help out! Something akin to the Sensorimotor lobe tracking the Nanite chemical in a norn they're looking at wouldn't be too hard.

If you need help with anything else, I'm available!

(For voluntary actions, not sure if that's possible sadly)

You know...wait...nevermind... wait...no...umm...maybe later...

I'm available if you want to make an alternate genome!

Also just discovered that contraceptin and platelets in TWB/TCB use the same chemical number.

Discovered the hard way that Borg/TWB genetics aren't compatible... But I also got my little adventure on camera!

I've been getting super into Star Trek lately, so if you wanted to make updates/careguides/etc, I'd be happy to do little videos on them! I'm planning on making my BorgNorn escapade a series anyway, and I already got one commenter on my video saying they wanted to try these fellows out!

I've finally gotten around to trying these guys out! They're neat, I always really liked playing with BNV2: Lite so I was pretty excited to give them a go. Star Trek was a big thing in my family.

As a little experiment of my own, I injected both this version and BNV2: Lite into the same world. My own little made-up story being that there was a sort of... temporal anomaly(?) and so the old Borg are assimilating the ship at the same time as the new Borg. Some craziness ensued.

At the end of the day though, the new Borg prevailed. I really enjoy this new release! Resistance was quite futile indeed.

Does anybody have a copy of the fixed body data for these guys?
