Hey everyone,

I'm writing an essay for uni on atificial life with regards to modern ideas about genetics, wherein I will examine the Creatures Franchise and apply certain theories. So by way of background research I'd like to know your thoughts on what makes Creatures unique. I have my own ideas but I'd love to hear yours. Any sort of insight would be great - why you like it, how it's different from other games, technical info that I can use. If you have any really interesting theories I won't claim theyre mine but say they are those of a member of the Creatures community. And interesting trivea and info would be useful, any technical detail about the engine and coding (I have an overview of how it works but details would be really useful as it's alot to get my head around). Just anything you think would be interesting really! Thanks guys.

What makes creatures unique?

First thought I have about that is a big difference compared to most other A-life games, Creatures have genetics that are mutatable, therefore they have an evolution.

A big part of Creatures probably one which may have been mentioned alot in reviews is how these creatures can move, act and think autonomously and also the fact that you cannot force them to do anything, but you can encourage them what actions are good and what actions are bad.

Reproduction is also an unforgettable part of the entire series, creatures evolve and mutate through reproduction and certain mutations may be selectively or obliviously crossed over, Creatures has all these hormones that allow for creatures to be fertile or infertile at different times, meaning they cannot always reproduce.

Crossbreeding is something I mentioned slightly in the earlier paragraphs, with crossbreeding the player can breed creatures of different breeds creating a mixed breed.

What is most interesting about crossbreeding is how not all genes are crossed over, so that means certain genes of the father may not be inherited at all.

For example, if you cross over a Bruin and a Civet norn (Both from Creatures 3) sometimes they may only get the Civet's head appearence, while the other body parts have the appearence of a Bruin's.

Good luck with your essay Frick! [nsmile]

I'll likely add some thoughts myself if I find the time in the next few days. I'll just throw a mysterious clue out there and say that there is a CCSF release coming up in the next couple of days that might be of particular interest to you...

Best of luck with your essay!

That sounds like so much fun! :D Good luck on it [nsmile]

I find Creatures unique because the characters in it are unique, but most of all, the way they made the scientific parts of it so cool. [nsmirk] They made the genes of the norn different from any other, and thay made it so that each norn has a different growth cycle. Norns can become prone to disease and euthanasia and become even infertile when born. Of course, when they are fertile, they still make the graphics and sounds 100% kid safe ;) The game its self is really neat, too, (I don't know if you are going to include Creatures Village as part of it somewhere or not but if you are, then you can maybe use this :P ) having the characters react to the enviroment in different ways and having the norns interact in different ways with each other. The norns' gene pools each have different variations of "chemicals" (i guess you could call them that XD sorry!) and that affects their offspring. Their offspring aren't always part yellow like the mother and part blue like the father, and mix-and-matched parts from both sides, but more of a balanced mixture between them both, and their parents' genes affect their offspring too [nwink] i really hope this was helpful! (sorry im A.D.H.D. so I sometimes lose track as to what I've said at that moment and when another idea comes into my mind, i just type it out so i dont lose it XD sorry if i was all over the place at times, which im pretty sure I was.) Best of luck on your essay! [ngrin]

now to finish mine...
