What names are you looking for? Fantasy? Human names? Funny names? |

Well, I am a bottomless barrel of norn names. If you tell me what a norn is like, and I'll probably be able to come up with a name that suits them. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at non-personalized names, as the traits of whatever I am naming help me come up with the name. For example, Kytoril was named for his lineage. Ky is a minor modification from the "Ki" in Kilchulchoi, or is from Bor@1±[y, il is from the pronunciation of Bor@1±[y (bore-a-lily), and the t is because he's a Grendelchi.
If you are really stuck for names, though, sometimes using a name generator (this is a very good one) will get some good names. I've never had to use that method for norns, but it helps for other things. Another good method is taking a trait about the creature, putting it in a single word, and then running that through a translator.

I typically find a theme that I can search for. Sometimes it's the Latin words for butterflies, or common types of birds. Other times I go through a list of names that come from a certain location and choose those. There are also lots of great name generators out there! I've found that this site has a lot of great ideas!

I tend to use name generators, like Jessica suggested, too. I've never tried that website before though; I'll have to give it a go! On top of that, the Baby Name Book at Helen's Bibble Directory is also good if you're lacking inspiration.
Another idea is to give your Norns names that relate to their breed, i.e. one of my female Apple Norns was called 'Apphia' because it sounded similar to 'Apple'. |

@Jessica I do exactly the same
My last few norns are called after LOTR elves
My aquanorns are called after Ariel and her sisters from.the little.mermaid
I have also called some norns after kind of sweets and pizza's (like fungi or salami) :p

I usually start with whatever word is in their moniker and go from there. So my Norns end up with names like Dovecoo, Ferngully, and Fishskin. ("Fishskin" proved to be about as difficult for Norns to pronounce as it is for humans.)
When that gets boring, I do what Laura mentioned; for instance I had one semi-wolfing run with a bunch of butterfly Norn crossbreeds, so I named them all after kinds of butterflies. I had Norns with names like Atlas, Vanessa, Ulysses, etc. Butterflies ended up being surprisingly good in that respect.
Back when I played Creatures 1, I named them all after characters from the Myst series. My first Norn was a White-haired Pixie named Atrus; his "wife" was a Banana Norn named Catherine. It got kind of convoluted from there, because they had a daughter I couldn't find an appropriate name for, and she ended up mating with a PMN I'd named Gehn... XD
One of these days I need to name my Norns after CCaves members and see what shenanigans ensue.

Ooh, that CC names concept sounds fun. I think I might make a world like that, and maybe post the shenanigans on my blog.

Might be something fun for the CCSF, too!
(Insert this line for every idea that pops up in the next month. Anything and everything that could be used for the CCSF shall get this recommendation from me! Just ignore, though, because I think that would mean nothing would happen in October...)

20000-names.com is a great place if you want cool names that have meanings that pertain to the appearance or personality of your creature!
I sometimes name the creature after the word that appears at the end of their moniker when I'm not in a creative mood.
Also, personal story time: I once decided that I was going to name all the norns in my world after the 7 deadly sins, and all of them ended up living up to their names. It was really weird! |

I usually just give them "normal" names. Billy, Katrina etc. But one of my Norns right now is named Captain Claws (he's a Scorpio Norn... and for some reason, has no tail.)
Would anyone be interested in a web based name generator? Probably wouldn't take very long to knock together.

When it comes to naming Norns, I've always found Helen's Bibble Directory to be quite helpful. c: They have a variety of both common and mystical-sounding names, listed out just for Norns!

I know I should post this in cobs but there should be a c2 cob that automatically names any norn, Grendel, ettin. Also one that records behaviors or dialogue between norns while your away. I love name ideas and links you guys gave thank you!

^Your site is down.
My creatures names vary a lot, but colours are common way for me to to name them (usually the same colour as the creature, but not always) as are plant names and other nouns or shortenings of them and unusual names.
I also sometimes name mates or siblings to a theme.
I do things like think of a colour and then think what things have that colour/have symbolic relation.
For example
pink: Hana or Hanami, Cherry, Sakura.
Or find a synonymous meaning in a thesaurus (online, so much easier) when I can't think of the exact word
For example:
I look up majesty and select 'Regent'
Wind becomes 'Zephyr'
Sparkly becomes 'Glitz'

I usually name my norns based off books or movies and stuff; sometimes I pick random names that I just enjoy hearing though. Pretty sure I've named at least two creatures 'Tristan.' |
