The plan so far: maximum 20 in the run. All 14 of the original players to choose a single 2nd generation norn from their creatures if they wish. The empty places on the run being filled by norns chosen by other people wishing to join in. (If no-one else wants to join in, I might nominate a couple of norns.)
Edited to add: Round 2 starts Friday 6th September.
Available norns can be viewed here:
Part 1: NimhsLab, Feddlefew, InsanityPrelude, magpie-angel and HavenHoney
Part 2: mfb, Jessica, Leporidae, DarbyDoo and Kappsune
Part3: Minx, Frick, ylukyun and Grendel Man
Claimed norns so far:
InsanityPrelude: Rigid Weight, male exp bengal/butterfly cross
DarbyDoo: Psychedelic Surprise, female fallow/butterfly cross
NimhsLab: Bumpy Sea, female magma/exp bruin cross
ylukyun: Cloistered Attempt, female Dale/painted ChiChi cross
Grendel Man: Spiteful Scissors, female bengal/exp bruin cross
Jessica: Ludicrous Middle, male bengal/painted ChiChi cross
HavenHoney: Ultra Shake, male sahara/fallow cross
Kappsune: Rustic Apparel, female siamese/fallow cross
Frick: Watery Servant, male CFE bruin/Sphinx cross
Feddlefew: Useful Language, female siamese/expressive bengal cross
Laura: Heavenly Order, female sahara/chichi cross
magpie-angel: Superficial Hate, male purebred CFE bengal
KittyTikara: Legal Agreement, female zebra/butterfly cross
clohse: Cruel Bushes, female CFE civet/coloured Sahara cross
mfb: Rich Example, male CFE bondi/butterfly cross
Leporidae: Joyous Boats, male astro/fallow cross
Minx: Juicy Carriage, male chichi/CFE chichi
AlbianPrincess: Curious Fear, male sahara/CFE bengal cross
Elected:
1) Colossal Birds, male purebred CFE civet, because he's lovely and his mum was awesome.
2) Abstracted Balls, male expressive bengal/chichi cross, because both parents were prolific breeders but not yet in the run, and - well. How could I leave him out with a name like that? |

Would you not prefer one of your own norns' offspring? If not, I'll put you down for Shivering Downtown, as Grendel Man has already chosen. |

Any more for any more? I've PM'd a couple of people asking if they still want to take part, and the other three haven't been on for at least a couple of weeks, so I may include norns for them if they don't show before the next round of the run.
So - does anyone, not previously in round 1, want to take part in this round? If so, have a look at the links above and choose yourself a norn... |

Is it too late for me to participate?
If not I'd take any random available one. |

No, that's cool - there's a day to go yet. Do you have any preferences of breeds/colours etc.? |

Two spaces left, if anyone wants them!
It occurs to me that, assuming Eggs Must Hatch, that we can't split the babies up fairly on basis of who the mum is. I did have a mad idea of seeing who they looked like - head like mum? Mum's owner gets the egg, ditto for dad - but that seems a bit random (and not helpful if mum and dad both have the same head type!) Or could do - girls go with mum, boys with dad. Or the other way about. There are roughly equal numbers of males and females in this round, and I think I'll use Amai's cos file to remove the seasonal gender bias from the ship.
Also assuming a lower number of eggs for this run, I'll try and get them hatching out during the run, though I may move the eggs to a nursery metaroom. Depends how it goes. |

Round 2! The first hour and a half, and the craziness has started already - 1 death (Useful Language, from sickness) and 20 births so far. I've used the population control panel to keep norns infertile when they've laid 4 eggs or fathered 4 children - this has happened to 5 norns so far! The eldest of the babies (generation3) are now adolescent. The whole of the Biodome has now become the nursery... |

Another 1hour 45. all on unattended wolfling (I was either afk, or so busy hatching babies I had no time to interfere!) I made some changes to the world, adding the Universal Hub, Daedalus and, eventually, Morpheri, as I was running out of space; I also decided to run the Miracle Heal once an hour (game time) to stop any plagues.
Results: another 19 babies, 3 of which died on hatching. Of the 16 live births, 2 were 3rd gens, 7 were cross-bred 4th gens (one 2nd gen and one 3rd gen parent) and 7 were "true" 4th gens (two 3rd gen parents). 1 death in the run, a 3rd gen called Jobless Burn (son of Rustic Apparel and Rich Example) who'd exhibited issues since he was born - eventually he starved to death. About halfway through the run I put a torii from the Biodome to the Universal Hub, to allow the starting 2nd gen norns to mix with the babies.
I'm going to need to export some of the norns, as the world is slowing down significantly, perhaps because I'm using plants rather than vendors (which I don't want to change; I'm getting fewer norns starving to death, which is good.) As I've capped the population at 4 offspring, and the point of this round is to see whose line survives longest, I could just export those norns who've maxed out their breeding - this is true of 10 of the 2nd gens and 4 (already!) of the 3rd gens. This also means people could have copies of their norns if they wish, still at less than 4 hours old.
Distributing offspring: I'm still undecided on how to do this. Any suggestions gratefully received! |

I like the idea of exporting them once they have reached their breeding limit. They wouldn't really be contributing anything after that point and it would free up the resources for others.

It really does boggle my mind, how much different C3 is from C1. You just couldn't do this in original Creatures - even if you got them all eating and not distracting each other to death, they'd all be wiped out with the first bad infection. Part of me just wants to hack into a supercomputer and install C3 on it, just to watch norns take over the world...!
I suppose the other way to look at it is, I'm just being too kind to them - should perhaps put more toys in and fewer plants. Which is OK, but the norns who won't follow CAs will starve, and the rest will have slapfests around the food sources... unless maybe I set them up to change every season or two. Now, there's an idea. |

That's a thought. I'm not running the jungle though, so bacteria numbers shouldn't be ferociously high; and I've watched several norns throw off infection with no interference from me, it's just when you see there are 6+ norns with the same infection and all you can hear is coughing and sneezing that it gets troublesome. I do wonder how many groups of prehistoric humans were wiped out before we developed a robust immune system.
Edited to add: the forum just gave me medicine for that post! XD |

"Watery Servant like Cruel Bushes" who was living up to her name by slapping the snot out of Heavenly Order, who was complaining she felt trapped (and no wonder). I know it's unsporting, and I shouldn't laugh at my Norn, but reading this made me laugh like a drain. ![[nlaugh] [nlaugh]](/images/smilies/emot_laugh.gif) |

Well, she had the sense to get herself out of that one. She's still going strong - had a daughter, Inconclusive Lock, fathered by Joyous Boats. Now 4 hours old, but she'll stay in the run, probably in the desert when I re-import them (have just exported to tweak the world). |

Latest update on the wolfling run - not much happening so far. Sadly we've lost Heavenly Order - she fell foul of the metallophagous grendels, as did the first 3rd gen, Maniacal War.
4 more babies born during the world testing, though! |

Sorry, I didn't make that clear - after 3 hours, I exported everyone and changed a bunch of stuff around (room links, patch plants etc.). When I re-imported the norns, I imported a couple of the grendels, added the "eat gadget" scripts and injected the metallic carrots, which seem to have taken over a bit! They've seeded into the workroom (I changed the room types to allow it) and I took some into Daedalus, where they're happily growing in the middle section. I've linked the workroom and Daedalus with a torii, and all the doors are lockable, so if necessary I can isolate the grendels if they go a bit mad. I can't remember if they're breedable; if so, Daedalus could just become Grendel Central. |

She had two daughters, Inconclusive Lock (with Joyous Boats) and Zany Blood (with Colossal Birds). Inconclusive Lock has one son, Sharp Pear (with Idiotic Walk, son of Spiteful Scissors and Watery Servant).
Which means I got the original post wrong - confused some of my 3rd and 4th gens. Now fixed.
(It also means Sharp Pear got granddad Watery Servant's Sphinx arms - which is why he looks so weird!) |

He's still there, in Morpheri with the other old timers. Bizarrely, almost all the 1st gens lived to 5h39m old; all the 2nd gens seem to be living longer, there are a bunch of them at over 7 hours and still going strong. Not sure if this is relevant to changes in the world or not - I don't know enough about the underlying game to know if it's a genetic thing.
Ultra Shake lost his bright green colouring early on, and went a more subdued kind of lilac colour. Before the world re-arrangement, he spent a lot of time sitting by the meso door in the Universal Hub. He didn't starve to death, so he must've wandered back in there at some point to eat, then back to the UH again! But when I rearranged the world after 3 hours, I put the remaining 2nd gens into Morpheri, and he's been there ever since - seems quite happy. He's even recently fathered a daughter, Healthy Liquid (with Internal Walk). She had her dad's colour genes - she was bright green when she was a baby - though, as you can see from the pictures, she's also lost the colour as she's aged. She's just over an hour old and adolescent now. |

Yes, she's still alive, just over 7 hours old, and recently gave birth again! She's had 3 children: Illustrious Van (son of Ludicrous Middle), Disastrous Sheet (daughter of Juicy Carriage) and Stingy Woman (daughter of Rich Example).
The girls are fairly recent so quite young, but their brother is the father of Bewildered Authority (mother was Whole Twist). |
