I feel like the recently added resources section isn't living up to its full potential.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make it more useful?

There might be confusion as to what kinds of texts would be suitable or helpful for the resources section? What kinds of resources would you want to read?
I know there's been a suggestion for resources to show up on the dedicated games pages. (Ok, that was my suggestion... ) That might spur the creation of more general gameplay advice articles.

I see that the search function allows you to search within specific categories, but it might be nice just to have buttons or something that will show everything in a given category. I know you can just leave the search bar empty and hit "Find" and get the exact same result, but that tactic might not occur to everyone...
I like the idea of being able to sort them via game, too.

Could we add a bibble-length description field to go where the first couple of lines of the tutorial are now, in the main listing of resources? Using the first X characters often means that there is html code in that, and it sometimes isn't very descriptive of the resource as a whole.
So, instead of "Some breed-making resources, most are applicable t..." for the C3/DS Breed Making resource, you'd have "A list of resources for how to make Creatures breeds - mostly for C3/DS."

I love this idea. Just implemented it.
Feel free to help me write descriptions for the other articles.

Thanks! Another thing might be to have an 'introduction' blurb up the top:
Resource articles fall under four categories: Games, Development, Fanfiction and Website. The Games section is for articles to help people play games from the Creatures series, the Development section is for articles to help people develop for the Creatures series, the Fanfiction section is for completed stories about the Creatures series, and the Website section is for articles to help people use Creatures Caves.
Anyone may post new articles, so feel free to make an 'official' article for that project you're currently working on, or post a step-by-step guide that you may have written. You may also comment on articles and suggest updates to be made for them.

The vast majority of the articles from HomeCreatures don't fit any of the four categories - do we need a 'non-fiction' category?

The three articles on C1, C2, and CA will go very nicely under 'games', but the interviews and most of the feature articles (except for maybe the article on Genetic Objects, that's a bit 'development'-y) are odd ducks.

Genetic objects should go under development, I think.
Interviews should probably have their own category, there's a lot of them.

D'you reckon that'd encourage people to conduct more interviews?

What could the other articles from HomeCreatures be classified as?

Some of them read like game guides and walk throughs. Maybe we could have them as part of a "Getting started with X" section? |

The game guide-like ones can go under the 'game' category, which is for articles to help people play games from the Creatures series, and already has articles like the must-have lists, how to raise norns, etc. I'm not sure where to classify the others, like the norn torture article, or the Biology vs Creatures article.
The norn torture article is allegorical, so it could be mistaken for fanfiction, but I don't quite feel like it fits there. :/ Hmmmm..
We should totally have more 'Getting Started with X' articles, though.

Those two are both Philosophical / Theory. I'm not certain if there are enough like them right now to justify their own category. |

That's why I like the idea of a general non-fiction category, to encourage more of this kind of thing. ![[ngeek] [ngeek]](/images/smilies/emot_geek.gif)

Yeah I think there needs to be a more general category for this type of thing. They read almost like magazine articles. |

Why don't we just call them articles or essays? |

I'm not certain if this is necessarily a resource, but maybe we should have genetic repository? With annotations explaining gene functions and effects, like Jessica does in her case studies?
Even if it's just single or groups of genes from a whole genome, it would be useful for genetic engineers and people who have unusual mutations. |

That would be very, very helpful to those of us who are genetically challenged.
Wait, something tells me that didn't come out right...

I keep meaning to create easy reference materials for genes... I still feel like I'm little more than an amateur, but would something with C1 genes be a little helpful? Can't promise anything in the near future with everything else I've got going on, but anyone is welcome to create something like this! If not, I'll be sure to try to create something that can be helpful for anyone looking to learn more about genetics!

I think you have more experience with creatures genetics than most of us do, Jessica. 8^)
I think the main problem is that there isn't much documentation on what gene does what and how they interact with other genes. And some of the official documentation is just wrong about how some systems work. So anything helps, weather its just a list of common debilitating mutations or a detailed guide to body data and its relationship to pose genes.
Edit: I've been looking at those, Malkin. |

The blog post is far to generalized, and the comparison file is far too technical. It would be nice to have something in between.
Lemme put it this way, I wanna know how a bottle-rocket works. One person hands me a picture book about fire-crackers and another hands me a technical manual on rocket propulsion systems. Neither one is going to help me learn how a bottle-rocket works.

I think the way Jessica does it would be best- The technical text (as in everything needed to recreate the gene in a genetic editor), followed by the explanation of what the gene does. It's also hard to figure out which unknownases and floating loci are in use by different breeds right now.
I have a lot of time to kill this summer, considering that I'm in between college transfers and only taking classes part time, so I'd be willing to start documenting the standard C3 and Gizmo genomes |

That's what I meant by annotated genome.
Also, that would be wonderful, Feddlefew.

I'll definitely add this to my ever-growing project list! I think even if I provided a description of the genes I'm comfortable with, it will still be better than nothing! I'm still a little murky with the brain genes, but I have a pretty good grasp of what the majority of other genes do.
The Creatures Developer Resource (CDR) was an excellent genetics site, but it's been down for over a month. Doesn't look like it was ever archived due to its robots.txt file, which makes me very sad. I hope it returns soon! I also recommend geNorNics, although the navigation can be a little tricky and there isn't as much in-depth information. Still, it's helped me a few times!
Always good to see more people getting interested in the genetics side of Creatures: I stayed away from it as long as possible because it seemed overly complex, but it's a really interesting element of the games that can be fun to play around with!
