Inspired by Laura's C3/DS recommendations post. If you've been keeping up with my latest blogs, you'll know I've recently reset my C1 world.
I've never been very good at setting up worlds for C1, and to be quite honest, my last one was a complete failure. Food was scarce, toys even more so, and the only safe refuge was in the garden with the carrots. It had very few cobs in it, and my Norns were starving/dying/intensely bored. So, I've decided to seek a bit of assistance. You guys are pretty familiar with C1, right? How might I set up a decent Albia? ![[nblush] [nblush]](/images/smilies/emot_blush.gif)
All suggestions are welcome. I'd like to make sure my Norns have the best chance at survival, while still being able to enjoy it! I'd love to know what you guys think is best!

If you've never tried SteerPike's cobs, you really should. ![[ngrin] [ngrin]](/images/smilies/emot_grin.gif)

SteerPike's musical instruments are particularly good for grendels, I found, as most of them reduce anger. Fig's Tree also has some very innovative and beautiful COBs. ![[ngrin] [ngrin]](/images/smilies/emot_grin.gif)

Nice to see you enjoying C1, Lily!
I reccommend the Strained Carrots Machine and any of Muppetboy's COBs. As well as creating awesome food addons (you've gotta try the Garden Strawberry Patch and the Juicy Apples!) he's also modified some really handy things for your world, such as the Updated Bridge, Map Locator, Ocean Platform and the Passageways & Temple Cave. |

C1 will always be a personal favorite of mine! ![[nblush] [nblush]](/images/smilies/emot_blush.gif)
Ohh yes! Muppetboy's carrot patches show much promise! And I've used the Juicy Apples many times. Very handy indeed. And the Passageways look very nice. It would make getting to the hives a lot easier for those little honey lovers!

I gather that there's a bug with Muppetboy's food cobs - not quite sure how to fix it, but it might be an idea to skip the food cobs.
The updated bridge and passageways cobs are very helpful, though!

That's a pity, I've always enjoyed Muppetboy's food COBs; I had no idea! At least it seems like the Garden Strawberry Patch, Colorful Mushrooms and Juicy Apples are still safe. I use those three in my C1 world without any problems. |

Darn. So then the carrots don't work?

When Aaron eats a carrot while you've got Sandy selected, Sandy gets the food that Aaron ate, and Aaron is still hungry. ![[nscared] [nscared]](/images/smilies/emot_scared.gif)

Oh no! I don't suppose there's any way to fix them, is there? ![[nsad] [nsad]](/images/smilies/emot_sad.gif)

If you have Bobcob or CrEd32 you could try editing the COB to fix it, but I'm not sure exactly how. I'm sure lots of people would be interested in a tutorial on how to do this so that they could fix the cobs themelves!

Sadly I don't have either, and a complete lack of knowledge on how, anyway. Pity.

I couldn't figure out this issue for the longest time... I thought it was a glitch with my worlds that was randomly injecting starch every now and then. It's a pity the carrots don't work properly, but I'm glad that the problem actually has a source!
Might be a project for me to work on figuring out how to use CrEd32... Only thing I worry about is re-releasing someone else's work with a few updates. Worst case is that this might get me going on COB creation someday!

It might just be that the copy on Creatures Caves is an older version, and that Muppetboy fixed the glitch quietly between 2008 or so and whenever GirlySatan downloaded her copies.

I used to have several starter worlds with different sets of cobs installed - based on how fast your computer was, really.
In part it depends if you want to do wolfling/feral runs. If you spend a lot of time playing the game and interacting with the creatures, then you can put in as many vendors as you like and just use whichever ones are nearest. If you want to do wolfling runs, you either have to teach the creatures how to use the vendors (not trivial) or have lots of regenerating cobs in the world. The downside to those is that they're script-heavy (usually using the timers) which can be a problem, though less so on modern machines.
In terms of world hardware, there's a black hole patch, a submarine patch, and hootch shelf (also makes the shelves usable in the kitchen). There's a grendel-friendly patch (stops the grendels punching norns) and a cob to change the grendel mother to allow female grendels.
Vendors: cheese vendor (Steerpike?) and the strained carrot vendor are favourites. Slink's strained carrots by the case are also useful - they don't reduce hunger by a lot, but give plenty of reward, so they're kind of a teaching food. The pink lemonade vendor cools norns down, useful after they've been in the hot kitchen. Freya's oven cob turns the oven into a vendor. There's a cob (by Mark Boehler?) that makes the fridge produce 1-shot carrots, so the garden doesn't get over-run.
Regenerating cobs/cobs on timers: There's a coconut cob to make the desert island palm bear fruit, and a grapevine cob that installs near the wishing well. Slink's shiitake mushroom logs are fab for underground places, including under the island, but don't install too many or the norns will be gazing at the egg in the sky.
Roaches, carrot beetles and butterflies are fun, but are all on the script-heavy side. Might be worth it if your norns interact with them a lot; combined food/toy!
Toys: Steerpike led the pack on these, too. His train set is great because it reduces the boredom of anyone within earshot; the toy hand is particularly good for grendels, though norns seem to get addicted to it. They tend to obsess about the eye-ball too, though I don't know if that's just the TN version. |

It's probably going to take a while to decide! I have to be careful how many I have at one time though, because my laptop is finicky lately.

The Juicy Apples have been updated to the same version as GirlySatan is hosting - crucially without the 'starch glitch' or 'pet norn' bug. ![[ngrin] [ngrin]](/images/smilies/emot_grin.gif)
