I'm going to have lots of free time this winter break, so I'm planning on working on the website quite a bit. I tried hard to implement everyone's suggestions in the summer 2012 revamp, but I know some things got left out.
Anyway, what are your current suggestions on how to improve Creatures Caves? I'd love to hear them and attempt to implement them ASAP. Thanks.

I said it a bunch of times before, but I'll say it again: How about a "Mark as read" button?

An option to turn off the yellow update star for likes.
A 'visit my website' button under everyone's names on the forums if they've got a website listed in their profiles.
Perhaps an option for 'my computer is'... in the profile, so that people can just look up and see what their computer setup is.

Could you set it up so when you click a forum topic in a feed, it goes to that post, or at least the page the post is on, instead of the first page?
I agree with all Grendel Man and Malkin's ideas too. I especially like the idea of the my computer feature, it would make troubleshooting a lot easier. They could also have an option for what games they use and what versions they are. |

It'd only work, though, if people filled it out - though I guess we could just make a new thread for people who want to talk about their computer setups.

I see a lot of forums where people have their computer setups in their signature, but they tend to be tech-oriented ones. |

- Please would it still be possible to situate CC Chat a little more prominently on the site, in a similar way to how the forums are? It'd be nice to have chat more immediately noticeable on the homepage somehow. No biggie though!
- I think a 'favourites' feature for downloads would be really cool. In the same way that forum bookmarks and favourite users work, all your favourite downloads could be listed in one place. This could also be useful as a quick reference if they ever needed to be downloaded again or linked to, etc. Maybe they could be categorised too?
- Have you thought much more about introducing the Staff Member user level at some point? This topic seems to indicate that people like the idea so far. |

Thank you for the quick feedback! I appreciate everyone taking the time to respond. Please keep the suggestions coming. No suggestion is too small! (i.e. feel free to suggest moving a link to a different part of a page, or making a textbox bigger, etc. -- please tell me any little pet peeve you may have about the site!)
Grendel_Man wrote: I said it a bunch of times before, but I'll say it again: How about a "Mark as read" button? To be honest, the reason that I haven't implemented that feature is because I personally don't understand the point of it. Why would anyone want to mark threads read that he or she hasn't actually read? The yellow star on each individual forum turns blue once you've read any thread in it, so there's no need to attempt to change the color of that star.Malkin wrote: An option to turn off the yellow update star for likes. I like the idea of this, but I'm not sure exactly how to implement it. Would there be a drop down menu with like "Windows XP", "Mac OS X 5.0", etc.? Or just an open textbox that people can type anything in? If the latter is the idea, then I think that it would be the same for people just type their computer stats in their "info" section. However, I could add a little "note" below the info box to remind users that it's suggested that they include their computer and game details.ylukyun wrote: Could you set it up so when you click a forum topic in a feed, it goes to that post, or at least the page the post is on, instead of the first page? Ideally I would like it to function like this as well, but at the time I coded the Updates page I was unable to make it work properly. I'll keep tinkering with it and see what I can come up with. Actually I think the COBs section needs a LOT of work to really make it more useful. Perhaps I could just make a way to view "COBs that I have liked"? So basically if you 'like' a COB, it becomes one of your 'favorites'. It could also be cool if I could go to, for example, Ghosthande's profile and see all of her favorite COBs. What does everyone think about this? Could be useful for metarooms and adoptions as well.Laura wrote: Have you thought much more about introducing the Staff Member user level at some point? This topic seems to indicate that people like the idea so far. I actually want to implement it, but I just don't think the community is active enough at the moment for it to really be used to its full potential. I think perhaps once C4 is released, however, we could revisit the topic.
Additionally: The main section that I really want to improve on is the downloads section, particularly COBs. For those of you who are developers -- please let me know what changes you would like to see in this area, and the best way that you see to implement them. I'd really like to the make the Creatures Caves COBs section the "one stop shop" for the best and most up-to-date COBs in the community.

Some sort of version control system would be really useful. Ability to link dependencies and a space to describe conflicts. Metarooms could have a spot for dimensions. |

The yellow star on each individual forum turns blue once you've read any thread in it, so there's no need to attempt to change the color of that star.
Originally the main benefit of having it was that, at some point, you just might not have any interest in reading the threads in a particular forum. You still have to read at least one thread, per forum marked "new", to reset the stars, but honestly, that was a much bigger issue when you had to click the topmost topic specifically. Often times it might be a topic I just really wasn't interested in checking out, so it might "hang around" marking the forum as new for like a week.
I still think a "mark as new" feature would be really nice, but it's not really important for that reason.
Currently, if there's been a lot of activity or if you're just especially picky about what you want to read, after a while you can end up with big chunks or even a wall of yellow stars, with the only blue ones being the few topics you did read. Again, not really important, but if you use the "new" icon to indicate stuff that's actually new, it does make some sense to have the option to disable old threads without having to view each one.
I still like the old breed list idea from the last thread. Having a breed list other people could update (or just submit suggestions for) would be great, especially seeing as nowadays CreaturesCaves is essentially the hub for the English-speaking branch of the community--this is the perfect place for such a thing. I think there was a little confusion last time, because some people wanted a list for breed slots, and others wanted a list for genetic breeds... but I'm sure there's a way to do both without too much difficulty.
The only new idea I have, is that it might be nice to align the user's name/avater/info to the top of the cell instead of the middle. If someone posts a big wall of text like I just did, you often have to scroll down a ways to figure out who posted it. ![[ntongue] [ntongue]](/images/smilies/emot_tongue.gif)

A link that takes you from the forum/thread list to the first unread post in that thread. You see it all the time in the more generic forums elsewhere and it's really handy.
(I hope this doesn't exist yet and I have been doing it the long way all this time.)

Now when you click on a forum reply in the Updates/Likes feeds, it will automatically take you to the bottom of the last page of the thread. So you may have to scroll up a little, but this should minimize the number of clicks and amount of scrolling that you have to do when catching up on the forums. Enjoy!

I'd like to be able to sort the breeds in the breed list in alphabetical order, or by slot-order (norn slot A, B, C, etc). I think that'd be a useful feature.
The kind of information I'd be after for computer setup would be what OS people are using,if it's emulated on another OS or not, what games they play, and where they got those copies of the game (GOG.com vs Kutoka vs ancient copy of a disk from ye olden days, etc.) Instructions for The Albian Years are different compared to an old copy of C1 or C2, for example.

And I think the computer setup idea sounds useful. I think I could just add a textbox for it, with an example to show what people would be looking for.

I think the latest update broke the CSS on the mycaves page. Updates now appear in what looks like Times New Roman. Don't know if I'm the only one having this issue? |

@Ylukyun: I've had MyCaves (and sometimes the forums) pop up in Times New Roman as well. I think it predates the latest update, though.
That said, I've only had this happen once while on a computer. The other times it happened, I was using my smartphone.

Thanks for shifting the website and PMing and favouriting buttons to under the person's avatar and name, Rascii - it looks a lot less cluttered.
