Strange genetic disorders: causes?
Bearthing

This thread is about any you've all found in your Creatures escapades that are known but generally undocumented re: their causes. I'm personally talking C3/DS here, but I know weird stuff happens in the other games, too.

My first example: left- or rightwalkers. They happen every so often to me, born even of purebred and generally healthy norns, but I've never seen anyone explain why.

Second: female Norns stuck in pregnancy who won't lay even if you inject them with progesterone. Admittedly, this happens mostly when I screw around with Gizmo mixes, but I believe a friend told me she had it happen to a good part of her female population -- and she has no Gizmos.

Third: semi-immortal stuck-agers happening in, like, the second generation. Again, purebred or some kind of safe cross, like regular Chichi/Fallow. Do I just get "lucky" sometimes or can something affect this happening so early?

Fourth: I've never had one, but how do you end up with a genderless Norn? Is it a glitch or a legitimate disorder? I imagine if you took out all the reproductive organs something similar might occur -- but would it kill the Norn?

Fifth: less genetics, more behavioral, perhaps. How the heck do feral or wolfling Norns (specifically, CFEms) end up, after only 20 - 30 generations, coming up with strange answers to, say, "me quite hungry for starch" like "maybe hit norn" or, even more illogical, "maybe rest weed"? Surely these creatures couldn't have (in the first case) developed a mutation so fast to get food from aggression, or (in the second case) just forgotten how to form a rational sentence.

Anyway, feel free to post possible explanations or your own strange stories. I don't have any attachments, unfortunately, or else I'd post the genetics file(s) in question to get to the real root of the problem.

1. Brain mutations or deletions, usually another gene overwrote the brain or brain lobes.
2. No progesterone receptor. Injections won't do squat without a receptor.
3. Probably just "lucky" unless you have a radiation source in your world increasing overall mutation rate.
4. Glitch. Nothing to do with genetics, in fact genomes themselves are unisex.
5. Instincts can mutate that quickly. It could also be something the creature learned and then taught to others via recommendation.

1. This Right walkers? thread may have more info.

2. More research needed. I have a gengineered norn in my TCR profile who has been pregnant for over 2 hours.

3. I think you're just lucky, or perhaps your parental norns are stressed out, which causes more mutations in their young.

4. I have no idea. More norns can be found here who are genderless.

5. Could be a mutation, but so-called 'illogical' memory patterns may be caused by coincidence yielding fruit, as in the following story:

KnyteTrypper wrote:
My favorite funny norn saying is also my favorite refutation of people's exhortations about "stupid norns."

One day a young female norn in one of my worlds was sitting in a room by herself expressing about how friendly she was. Suddenly a nearby door opened, a friendly young male norn walked thru it, and they proceeded to kiss-pop the giggles out of each other for quite a long time, to their mutual enjoyment.

Thereafter, whenever this particular norn heard another norn expressing friendly, she'd happily advise "Suggest you watch door!"

#1: 'right' is the default verb. Therefore, a norn with a defective decision lobe will perpetually walk to the right.

#2: My guess would be lack of the progesterone receptor. Most female norns have a receptor that, when progesterone reaches a certain level, they lay the egg. If they're lacking that (or it's mutated to respond to a different chemical) then injecting them with progesterone will make no difference. You could use the Eggernator agent by Clucky, however, since that's unaffected by their genetics.

#4: A true genderless norn is impossible, because gender is assigned by the game. If you removed all the reproductive genes, however, you'd have a perfectly healthy, sterile norn.

#5: Most likely mutated instincts. When a norn sleeps, their dreams act out their instincts - eg the instinct to 'hit norn when angry' makes them dream that they're angry, they hit a norn and it makes them feel better. If the emotion connected with that instinct was mutated to hunger for starch instead of anger, they would think that hitting norns can resolve hunger for starch. However, unless they have a corresponding change in the 'hit norn' stimulus gene, they'll be sadly mistaken.

By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do.
