I've been in a decorating mood, as you can maybe tell from the Gargoyle agent I uploaded today. Making my C3/DS world visually attractive has been keeping me happily occupied on my days off. My norns aren't the least bit impressed, but that hasn't deterred me!
I know I'm not the only one who likes the decorating aspect of the game. Are things like the gargoyle (which serves no useful purpose other than making the world nice to look at), appealing to other people too? What sorts of decorations have you wished for in your worlds? I'm looking for ideas. If you share yours, I may steal them, but if I do I'll share what I create, and then you'll have it too.

I noticed the gargoyle + other statues in your screenshots in the Biodome thread (and the "norns are unimpressed" thread) and promptly wondered when you were going to get around to releasing them. Suffice to say, I enjoy the decorating aspect of the game as well, even if it just makes a single-room wolfling run look spiffier.
For ideas, I think large pieces of coral (like the big coral in Nornulu's aquatic half) would be good for aquatic places. That's about the only sort of decor I thought of, though.

The gargoyles look adorable and I can't wait to play with them in-game. I'm sure my Vampyre Grendels will feel right at home now.
I don't have a lot of ideas, but what about fountains? Maybe animated ones? Or ruined, broken pillars.

I've been thinking about fountains too, Ghosthande! I need to investigate how to make falling water look like falling water.
Yes, Grendel_man, I'll share the others too. I think the faerye will be next. (But not today, 'cause I have to go do responsible grownup stuff to earn my paycheck.)
Thanks for the ideas, keep 'em coming!

I generally prefer 'functional' agents, but I've been having great fun with your work.
I would like to suggest moons, suns, rainbows, planets! They could either be 'paper-style' or 'realistic'. Mermaids would be awesome too, as would toadstool-houses.

Ooh, lots of fun ideas! And I got an unexpected day off work tomorrow, too. The sun finally came out in the Pacific NW, and I guess everybody's enjoying the sunshine too much to be suicidal or psychotic. Maybe I'll just sit in the patio swing and make agents all day!

One thing I'd actually really like to see would be broken/ rusted/ mossed over machinery in C3/DS. I really like Ghosthande's idea of broken pillars as well. I think it'd be pretty cool to show a bit of wear and tear on the Ark.

The faerye has been posted. Enjoy! Keep the ideas coming. I may or may not have the skills to make all of them happen, but I'm loving the ideas, and maybe someone else out there will get inspired to work on some of them too.
Edit: I just uploaded a new decorative agent -- except this one's actually classified as a toy. It's a lamppost, because my first (and many of them since then) Creatures world was named Nornia, so it should have a lamppost. In addition to being decorative, it emits light CA when it's on and gives a "played with toy" stim when operated. Norns and the hand can turn it on and off. I'm quite proud of it, actually.

Is it possible to have a decorative agent that lowers or removes CAs? For instance, a sun shade that lowers light CA in the cell/room that it is in or a dehumidifier that removes moisture. Or how about a large air bubble or pocket of air that you can put in water areas that switches water to air in that room?
... I should learn how to make agents!

I don't see why that wouldn't be possible. Something like a decorative version of Farmer Shee's Fertiliser Stone. |

I've been considering having my statues ADD things, like moisture, since the moisture in the soil they sit on wouldn't evaporate. I suppose reducing light would make sense too, since they'd cast shadows. Would that be beneficial, though?
I'm not sure how one would go about creating an air bubble. That's not to say it can't be done, since I'm really a novice at this. It's worth a ponder!
[LATER] So here's what I'm thinking...I'm going to try at least some of this on my upcoming gargoyle statue update.
Since a statue casts a largish shadow, it should remove some light from the room, proportional to its size, and taking its color into account (the stonefish statue, being white, might actually brighten a room).
Also because of the shadow, and the large footprint of the statue, it should add some moisture to the room. This would also be in proportion to its size.
Those are the only two CA values I can see that "realistically" would be altered by a statue, unless it had a specific purpose...like maybe a Mother Nature statue that would increase fertility, that sort of thing.
Comments? Am I on a track that seems worth following?
UPDATE 2: I've been experimenting with CA values, and working on updating the existing decor agents to contribute in this area, as discussed above. What I found was that EMIT was too limiting, and ALTR ended up changing things too much or not enough. I think I'm on the right track now, using PROP to alter a room's original CA level (when the agent was placed there) by a percentage, and using a timer script to repeat the change periodically, for more consistent levels.
A new version of the Gargoyle is now available in the COB section (although naturally I've learned more and come up with even better ways of doing things since uploading him, so he'll be updated again soon). I'm working on an update to the StoneFish, as well.

Don't have any new ideas. I generally don't use decoration only agents. However I've found that playing around with the decoration options in the Garden Box make the process a lot more fun.
The Garden Box hasn't been officially released yet, but once it is I'd love to see these things included as a Garden Box addon. |

Geek2Nurse, that sounds really interesting! The reason why I was thinking about decorations that decrease CAs as well as increasing them was to use them to create fun scenarios without needing to make specialist metarooms. Increasing and decreasing CAs in this way could also make some interesting changes to norn migration - for instance, removing food smells around the Jungle entrances could stop norns flooding there for the awkwood creepers and adding extra food smells to, say, the inside of the Desert might make norns more likely to visit there. Adding these effects to decorations that spruce up the Ark is a neat added bonus to it all.
