| How do you notice personality? | |

This is kind of an odd question, I know. I find it hard, when raising norns, to notice any differences in their personalities. Oh, they do different things at times, but it usually seems more situational than personality-based to me. Except for obvious things like Hardman norns always being angry, or Treehuggers getting crowded & scared.
So. for those of you who are more nurturing hands, how do you notice personality differences in your norns?
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |

Well, I'm not really sure they can be said to *have* personalities, as such, so that does make sense. Most of what people describe as norn personality is actually just what we ascribe to them

I agree that most of 'norn personality' is what we read into them. Sometimes I'll witness an event in one of my norn's lives, and they'll give advice later on based on that event. So I guess it's like a memory, which leads to a quirk of advice?
In the 'funny things norns say' thread, KnyteTrypper had this story which has stuck with me:
KnyteTrypper wrote: My favorite funny norn saying is also my favorite refutation of people's exhortations about "stupid norns."
One day a young female norn in one of my worlds was sitting in a room by herself expressing about how friendly she was. Suddenly a nearby door opened, a friendly young male norn walked thru it, and they proceeded to kiss-pop the giggles out of each other for quite a long time, to their mutual enjoyment.
Thereafter, whenever this particular norn heard another norn expressing friendly, she'd happily advise "Suggest you watch door!"

As already mentioned, a lot of the personality I see in a norn is a personality that I am projecting onto them myself. However, at least in my C1 game, I do find noticeable differences in my creatures that allow me to distinguish them.
For example, I have one norn who is fabulous at testing COBs, as he will push or pull anything I give him over and over and over again. I have difficulties convincing other norns to interact with the object at all, and they will quickly lose interest in it afterwards.
Having creatures with noticeable mutations can help as well. I have a grendel who has a problem with a receptor gene, as boredom will cause him to feel overcrowded, causing him to run amok. Because of this, being near other creatures does not cause him to become overcrowded, ever. So even though it's technically a malfunction in the way his genes should function, it makes me feel that he is more "sociable" than other creatures.

I agree with Jessi,C1 norns feel more like they have a bit of more personality...
In C3-DS all of my creatures do the same thing and to be honest - it feel quite repetive to watch them,it's very rare if something happens..if it does,I must say it been happening more in C3 standalone then my DS (or merged C3-DS) >_>'
C2 norns seem to be a bit closer to C1, that with personality and doing various things that kept me amazed, just like C1.
I just find C1 and C2 more exciting by seeing how the creatures seem to do more and the way they act- makes one easily see who is who,and from there, fort of see a personality - bit as Jessi also said,Genetic mutations can also make a creature uniq in it's own way,of course!
C3 was the one who added more words, among them - Like/Dislike and Hate/Love..
Still - I don't take those word for real allways, here is some funny examples:
1.had norns who got beaten by grendels (or any other kill thirsty creature) and they just smiled and say they still like/love them O.o'
The only possible answer as a defense for this? Probably those norns have too big hearts to not hate/dislike anyone..>_>*
2. Had a bunch of norns on the upper norn meso floor, and they all talked about how much they like each other, and then I hatched a new norn, suddenly they said they liked it but they never met it *it's under the floor dangit,it's out of sight and it didn't talk either..but still they know that new one so well that they like it..and knows it name >_>' ?) also I think the baby later replied with like one of the norns on the upper area too -_-'
Sadly this is not a "once in a lifetime happening" with DS (I might try this on C3 too,but I think it's fairly the same perhaps)
I just think it is weird that a group of norns talking on a higher area suddenly knows a newcomer by name (and like/dislike) when they never interact with the new one at all - also this could very well be a imported norn too,not only a newhatched baby,
as I tried that too, same result..
3. had once a couple, who the guy liked the girl, but she wasn't so interessted - not until later they got a egg togheter they two kept say they love each other, til she laid it,she didn't love him anymore ..
those 2 was sort of interessting.
but there been one thing I tested for fun that I found quite interessting:
I downloaded one german talking, one french talking and had one normal english talking norn - the result?
none of them understand each other XD If the french one expressed it's feeling, the other two would just not respond back.
I also tried download some more -and in the end - french talked only to the french, german talking only to german ones and finaly - english to english XD
(sorry if that was a bit off-topic)
So yes - I think C1 (and C2) is the ones where I found most personality in my creatures, making them stand out not only via color and apperance wise ^^'
As for me- C3 (and Ds) finding norns standing out from the crowd
is a bit ore rare (even if they may have a different look/color - they usuly still act pretty much like the other ones, without doing anything new and exciting)
My C3-DS ones just usuly do nothing, sit still in groups- cuddling each other, sleep, lay lot of eggs, talk to each other - suggesting things, wich they don't even consider to do anyway - they even is so lazy to not eat at all as well *only if I drop by and bring some food they happily munch at it -_-' And they don't even want to try explore the rest of the worlds/rooms.. (yes, this is surely a good dewscription of CFE norns..but my standard C3 ones is not much more action - usuly they seem to walk a bit more then stay in the crowd and talk about how much theylike/dislike others and suggest things )
To be honest - even my CA norns been more exciting (the Creatures Adventure game, not the addon breed on my site XD )
I just find it sad you can't export the CA norns ..
(Once again, sorry if this is half off-topic? )
It would be nice if the personality thing - such as true like/dislike not only for creatures and the hand owners, but for objects too could be implemented in C4..(at least what I hoped for,to make it more real) |
