Or just open it in Visual Studio 2011. That worked for me. |

Most files look like that when you open them with Visual Studio. (or Notepad, Visual Studio just adds indents and stuff)
Any file that can't be read just turns into a bunch of gibberish, although you can usually still make out a few words.

Unfortunately Creatures wiki doesn't seem to have an article on the EXP file format, but if you read about the other formats and research how files for games are stored and parsed (try opening that file with a hex editor instead of VS) you may begin to understand what the 'gibberish' means
