I'm in the process of planning a revamp for the website. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to post them here. Thanks!

I still think the forums should be fixed so that threads remain on one page and one page only, rather than getting mixed up with threads from previous pages. The current setup is infuriating to deal with when one is trying to find a specific topic that isn't on the first page.
Other than that, I think a breeds page is in order. At the moment, people who want to submit a breed either have to put it in Adoptions or misc. COBS, neither of which are accurate for breeds.

Three things leap to mind:
Have the links page with the same flexibility as the metarooms page regarding who updates what, so that I can update links that a higher-up staff member put in years ago.
Have the metarooms list sortable by game.
A search function for the images and their comments.
Thank you, Rascii!

I do have a question.
I've noticed that if I visit the home page before any other page, it doesn't recognize me... so if I then try to (for instance) vote in a poll, it tells me I can't because I'm not logged in. But if I view the forum first, then it will recognize me back on the index page, I can vote in polls, etc. I'm not really sure why this is? It doesn't seem to be dependent on what browser I'm using.

I'd like to be able to "watch" particular threads and have them listed on a page such as "Currently followed threads". And when someone replied to a thread, you'd like to receive an e-mail. I think this would be a very helpful feature.
It would also encourage people to keep coming back :-)

^That reminds me of another idea. CCaves could also use a "Mark Forums/Thread as Read" button. I really do not like having to actually enter a topic in order to get it to stop glowing, especially if it's about something I'm not interested in.
I also think the Survivor forum needs to be axed. It's seriously outlived its purpose.

I've noticed that sticky posts head up across the top of every page in a forum - you see them on the first page, and that is fine, but you go to th next page, and they are still there. I find it annoying because 3/4 of the threads are obscured by stickies i've already read, and it make looking through threads harder, as you can only see a few at the bottom on every page.

Awesome, Rascii! Can't wait to see the revamp! Many of the suggestions already posted are awesome, particularly being able to easily mark topics as read. One thing that's not terribly important, but could be nice, is a preview button: I still have a few issues remembering the commands, and have had to go back and edit an already posted message a few times. But that's quite minor!
I'm not sure if it would be possible to clean up the links a bit: I tend to get a little lost among the left-hand navigation when I'm not browsing the forum.
I think it's important to figure out where the priorities of Creatures Caves are, and assign a navigation system that caters to that. I'm sure I could go on and on, but I wish you all the best! I'm excited! I do hope the Bengal Norn at the top doesn't disappear, though... He's too cute!

I'd like to see an instant chat feature, so that you don't have to go through the time-consuming effort of sending a message to an online user. |

Wow Grendel_Man, you really think the Survivor forum should be done away with completely? Wouldn't just locking the forum have basically the same result? I can imagine someone here probably has fond memories of Survivor.

The Survivor the forum was supposed to go with never happened and probably will never happen. Since there's still memories of past Survivors to fall back on, there's no longer a reason for its existence.
But whatever. I really don't care if it gets locked or banished completely; I'm just sick of seeing random newbies post in there thinking it's a recent event when it's been dead for years.

I agree that the Survivor forum could be locked, or something like that, if only to avoid more confusion while the game isn't running. I'm sure I recall Rascii playing with the idea of a revival though, unless I imagined it (maybe).Grendel_Man wrote: I'm just sick of seeing random newbies post in there thinking it's a recent event when it's been dead for years. Why don't you let the moderators worry about that for now, and just carry on enjoying the other forums? We usually have a good handle on things. |

Another thing Rascii, would it be possible to update the forum censoring system so it only censors actual curse-words? As many may know, typing words such as C0ckatiel and Peac0ck causes them to be censored as Cockatiel and Peacock. |

PrivateMessage history: I can see that you have sent me, but I cannot see what I have sent you.
PM viewing:
If someone does PM, then each one should be in it's own thread - if the name of the Thread subject is the same, it should go into the same thread, like with text messaging on Android/iPhone, etc - then you can see the whole 'chat' history in one page. This would mean you would need to drop the RE" prefix because it would create a new thread each time.

@ylukyun: thanks for that! I didn't know it was there. It's kinda sneaky, not so obvious, similar to the spot where you edit your Avatar - thanks for helping me find that. I like that feature where you can see that they have not read your messages - That is quite likely unique to CC :-)
I do think that the other point is still valid though; about viewing conversations per thread, rather than per message.

I'm finalizing the post/view/edit/delete pages for the News section of the new revamped website.
Any suggestions on the posting, editing, or deleting processes before I begin using it as a template for the rest of the site?
UPDATE: Changes that have been made since the current news section:
- Search feature improved
- Next links limited to 10
- Posting/editing text boxes are larger
- When a post is deleted, the user is routed back to the news page instead of to a confirmation page
- Tables are wider and make a better use of viewing space
- All News articles automatically have a corresponding forum thread created.
- The "Click here to discuss this news post in the forums." has been done away with and a simple "Discuss" link has been added near the article headline.
I considered implementing a "preview" option when posting/editing, since many users seem interested in this, but honestly I don't really see a difference between the preview option and just posting the post, showing it, and including an edit link for quick editing. Thoughts?

oh oh, forgot to ask, do you plan on fixing the pages per forum? Or is that the "next links limited to 10"? Because there's like 20+ and yet they are practically worthless most of them.

Only news threads that have been added via the revamp's news posting page will show a "discuss" link at the moment, Malkin.
Basically the new delete process will be as such:
1. Click on the delete button
2. Go to page that asks "are you sure you want to delete?" --> Click "Yes"
3. Return to the page you were on before, with a "Post has been deleted" message at the top of the page.
Previously, step 3 would have been a page exclusively stating "Post has been deleted. Click here to return to where you came from". So the new setup basically saves you from clicking an unnecessarily link.
No worries, it will still ask if you want to delete it or not.
Also: I really like the "preview" feature. I didn't think I would, but I love it. Hehe.

Oh, and I gotta ask, is it just me or do other people have issues viewing large images in the galleries? I know this has little to do with revamping but more improving perhaps, but, I can't get around viewing large images correctly. I get the top corner and am inable to move the image, scroll, or move the window. Or zoom out without using keyboard shortcuts.

Do we have (and I've just missed it), or can we have, a little thing that says whose birthday it is that day, like the Gameware forums used to have?

Perhaps such a feature should not include banned members, as they're usually spambots.

Well, it would probably just be a small sliver, kind of like a ticker, so somewhere on the bottom of the website, or just in a horizontal break between some content div's.
If not on the front page, maybe in the forums (since that's where people actually interact with others). Or on the login screen? Or even in the main area of "My Caves"? It doesn't even have to be visible at all times. It could be something you actually have to navigate to.
So...I don't know. Wherever you can squeeze it without it looking out of place? :p
And I second Malkin's suggestion. Why bother recognizing members' birthdays who can't even login? :p |
