I posted on the new users topic, but if you missed that, my name is Minx, and I hope to be a contributing forum user in the future.
As of this moment, I purchased the Creatures series on Gog.com after a 10+ year hiatus from playing it. I just want to know which version the folks on this site lean toward, and briefly explain why you prefer one over the other. I'm curious, and it will help me decide which one to dedicate myself to. Thanks!

I usually prefer C3. Although it doesn't have the applet interface and the Norns might seem a little less realistic in some ways, there's a more active developing community still churning out third-party add-ons for Creatures 3 and Docking Station. There's also the C1toDS and C2toDS projects, which introduce the C1 and C2 worlds to C3/DS, so you basically can have all three games in one.

Not having the applet interface has, so far, been a bit frustrating for me. I'm not really sure how the Docking Station works either, but I just started back at it today. I want to play whichever game has more of a community (especially because they are now so dated), and the integration of all three games sound very cool. I guess I will just have to get used to the interface, and maybe read some detailed guides on how to play it more successfully.

C3 simply for stability. I can run a world for 3+ hours without it crashing. |

Good point, and something I hadn't thought of. I noticed that you can't access your DS world through Creatures 3. Is it best to play the game through the Docking Station even though the online abilities are kind of defunct?

Yes, playing C3 through DS (docking the game - when you start a new world in DS, click on the DS logo when you name the world) is better, as it gives you a little more space and you don't have to deal with bioenergy or pickups.
There's a thread here about playing your DS game offline.

What Malkin said, plus more agents work for DS docked than just in C3. |

And DS has more functionality - little tricks like Ctrl+Shift+E to create food.
On my computer though a docked world tends to run really slow, so I use the C3 in DS metarooms to get whichever one I happen to want.
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |

I'm torn between them but I'm leaning towards C2 at the moment. That's the one I'm going to start playing again - I was on a little hiatus but not as long as you! You will need canny or nova sub terra norns to avoid all your norns dying out.

The GOG starter norns for C2 aren't that bad - they are a bit fragile for wolfling runs, but would be fine if you're the nurturing type. I believe they're an updated genome that got a bunch of fixes.

Thanks for all of the responses and suggestions. I played C3 for several hours last night, and I love the idea of it, except my norns are still dying. They do fine in the DS, but once out in the ship, they always catch a disease from the Grendels and die. I've taken to killing or exporting every Grendel that is born (which is about every few minutes), and that's getting a bit disheartening. I think the piranhas are even getting bored of it.

Try downloading the Grettin Switch and using it to turn the egg-layer off.
Just change the address extension from .co.uk to .com on the download link; Gameware didn't update any links when they moved to the new .com address so their download links are broken.

The grettin switch is great. The "old fashioned" solution of putting the grendel eggs in the piranah pool so they won't hatch also works fine. |

I decided to use the selective force field, and it seems to work out just fine. Thanks for the tips!

There's also a door/lift hider - I prefer that because they don't repeatedly bonk into the force field.

You can also kill the Grendel mother with CAOS coding, that's what I usually do. Prevents the eggs from even being laid. All you have to do is press CTRL, Shift, and C, and then type "kill hots" (without the quotes). Then, hover your hand over the Grendel mother and press enter. If it says OK, problem solved, if not reposition the hand and press Enter again until it kills it. ^^

or 'tick 0' which will turn its timer off but not remove it, in case you want it later...
