The thread for my Devil's Reef Survivor Run.
I decided to do this a little differently than the last one. Instead of simply posting descriptions of the pictures, I'm going to do this WR in much the same manner as a story. In essence, it'll be two parts wolfling run, one part fanfiction.
Please tell me what you think of it.
------
Chapter 0: The Prelude

The sound of waves lapping against the old, wooden dock certainly sounded peaceful. However, one look around the area gave off a feeling of anything but. Only a distant lighthouse stood clear of the fog, and a glance at the barnacle-crusted ship made it obvious that this area had been uninhabited for years.

Yet, there were signs of life. Eight norn eggs lay below an old sign that was likely to remain unheeded. They did not look fresh, but as they were warm to the touch it was probable whatever was inside of them was still alive. Their very presence, however, raised questions. Who put them here? And why?

A most intriguing possibility sat on the deck of the old ship. It was a button, resembling a vine most odd. Other such buttons like these had a counterpart somewhere, ready to warp those who activated them between two locales. If that was the case, where did this one lead? Another area many light years away? The other side of the coast?
Or, perhaps, into the dark depths of the ocean itself...?
------
The actual run itself begins tomorrow. This is just a prelude to get things started and to let everyone know that I've done everything I needed to do.

I echo what everyone else has said; I think a narrative suits the nature of this Wolfling Run well! It really gives us that element of suspense and mystery. So yeah, great job so far.
Now... Is it tomorrow yet? |

This sounds very interesting! I can't wait to read what happens. And I need to actually enjoy this meta room myself... I've been catching up on using all of the CCSF downloads, and this is next on my list! Waiting, waiting, waiting for the first part of this. You certainly intrigued us all with a short prelude!

Oh this is going to be neat. Wolfing runs are always fun to read, so one told fanfiction style will be doubly fun.
The finny Grendel looks cool, too.

Now it properly begins!

Chapter 1: They Live

Suddenly, a crack broke the eerie almost silence of the dock. The eggs were indeed alive, ready to begin the somewhat tedious process of inhabiting this room, and of the mysteries it may have contained.

Before long, the marbled blue/green egg broke open, releasing what at first glance appeared to be a Porcelain Norn. However, his limbs were definitely not like those of normal porcelains. Instead of the pottery-like nature the rest of him had, these were plain in color and oddly natural looking. One could assume that they might also be amphibian....

After prodding an old telescope, the old ship grabbed this norn's interest, and he wandered aboard. It was at this time that some mysterious force implanted the word "Howard" into his mind. In a few moments, he decided to start calling himself that. What had decided to christen him that was beyond his concern at the moment. He seemed to be more interested in examining a plush whale something had left on the deck.

Naturally, the fact that he was not alone also escaped his attention. The egg that had been positioned immediately next to his own soon showed signs of breaking open....

...And what a sight it contained! Its previous inhabitant was a giant amongst norns, covered in thick fur from head to foot. A pair of fierce looking sabers jutted downwards from his upper jaw. Make no mistake, this norn was a member of the primitive race called the Sabertooths. However, this environment was a far cry from the plains and caves of their kind's native KT.

Howard found the old telescope to be nothing more than a fleeting interest, but the newly born sabertooth was deeply intrigued by it. While he prodded it without thinking about actually looking into it, the same force that had named Howard bestowed upon him the name of Borland. This was the same name as a famous sea monster of Albia, but of course this norn had no way of knowing that.

The smell of Howard entered Borland's nostrils, and he followed his nose to initiate the first contact between a fellow creature either of them had. They were wary at first. Borland in particular approached and backed away repeatedly. Eventually, however, they decided that they were both on the same side.

Meanwhile, another egg prepared to open sesame. Its coloration suggested something quite peaceful.

The being inside, however, was anything but. She was a member of the rough-and-tumble race of Beowulf; a descendent of the greatest Grendel-slayer ever known. Her name was Halcyon, and her presence understandably made Howard nervous. Whether this was due to her breed or her gender was not clear.

Like Borland before her, Halcyon became intrigued by the telescope. She knew not of who left it here, nor how to properly use it. Regardless, it made for an interesting plaything.

Eventually, she wandered off towards the old ship, where most of the others had wandered previously. Howard alone was left to greet the next newcomer, who would spring forth from an egg seemingly crafted from marble.

Thankfully for him, the newcomer was a much-more placid Apple Norn. While she wouldn't enjoy the fog, the moist air would certainly help to make her feel at home, what with her kind being native to tropical rainforests and their like.

Soon after hatching, fate decreed that her name shall be Apphia. Not being one for males right from the egg, she focused her attention on Halcyon, following at her heels quite closely. If these two became close, it would be quite the odd relationship indeed.

Being the first born unfortunately did not mean anything to this crowd. While there was no harassment because someone was seen as the omega, there was no alpha either. The case in point was Howard, who had wandered off from the rest of the group and now had discovered an old, rustic shack containing food that was still edible. The shoreline, at least, was a safe haven for the norns...for now, anyway.
------
To be continued next post....
Ghosthande: The grendel is actually not part of the run - he lives in an entirely different world than all the norns. He just posed for the banner.

Love this so far, and is it just me or is something deeply "pun intended" wrong with Howard's limbs and tail....
P.S. Did you see the tribute banner I drew based on this Wolfing Run?
P.P.S. Please write some more. I can barely wait for the other norns to hatch and for us to find out about the monster. What is the monster anyway? Some GMed aggressive deep norn or a weird aquatic supergrendel?
Great idea to tell a WR like a fanfic by the way. |

Sorry about not posting anything for a while - my motivation took another nosedive, and as such I won't be updating this frequently (about once a week at most).
------

It wasn't long before yet another one of the eggs decided it was time to open. This particular one happened to be colored in much the same manner as a dairy cow.

The resulting norn, while not looking very much like a bovine, was indeed based on an ungulate. The newly born fallow norn, with the rather ordinary name of Carter, proceeded to play with the telescope much like many before him had did. The old thing must have been quite interesting to attract such attention.

Also like many before him, Carter didn't focus on it for long and instead opted to join several of his fellows on the old ship. They accepted him without much of a fuss. One had to wonder if this ship was just as popular before whatever cataclysm drove this place to be abandoned.

Shortly after Carter's entry, another egg displaying rather aggressive coloration started to hatch.

The being inside it definitely lived up to expectations. Molly, the newly born Hardman, looked optimistic as she followed in the footsteps of her fellows and proceeded to prod the old telescope. Eventually, she would have to compete with Halcyon as resident Grendel hunter, but for now all would be well.

Molly's life would be made that much harder by Halcyon's emerging personality. She seemed to be bent on being the top dog of this unusual crew, and to prove it she often let loose on her fellows physically. Fortunately, she lost interest too quickly to do any serious arm, but Apphia especially was at risk of homicide if such behavior continued.

Another egg with a calming blue pattern began to hatch forth.

The being inside it was a plain-looking Bruin who quickly adopted the name of Rhodan. He too took an interest in the telescope right next to the birthing area.
((Okay, I know my writing's getting sloppy, but there's only so many ways I can write "Norn hatches and plays with telescope." =P))

With his birth, the way was clear for the eighth and final egg to open. Judging by the coloration, the being inside it was bound to be an aquatic creature of some sort....

The last norn to hatch was also the least, at least in terms of size. However, her appearance suggested that she was easily the most prepared norn of the bunch, what with her fins and webbed feet. She was a member of the rare race of Undine, and after taking the dark-sounding name of Moondark, she promptly averted the trend of heading straight for the telescope by instead joining Howard in the shack and noshing on a fried fish he had taken out earlier.

With everyone hatched, there was more time to access this odd situation they all found themselves in. While everyone seemed to share an impeccable taste for seagulls, they were otherwise quite different in both appearance and mannerisms. The road to eking out an existence here would quite be rocky one indeed....

While everyone else made the old ship into a popular party place, Howard and Moondark took to each other, perhaps seeing a kinship in their odd, aquatic appearances.
Without any major incidents in their lives thus far, this place seemed to be the same as any other despite the ominous atmosphere. However, it probably wouldn't be long before it lived up to its spooky appearance....

Sam: The picture was quite nice, although I find it rather amusing that my run's getting fanart for it despite not having gone on for very long. As for the predator...you'll see.

Come on, it'll be dramatic. Haven't you watched any horror movies with basically just that trope as the introduction for the monster/killer/special-effect-failure?
Anyway, appearance proves little clue to aggression in creatures. I've had a killer gaius once. |

[quote="Ghosthande"]Well, every once in a while a Creature will just go psycho. Happens to Norns in my world all the time. The main difference is that if a Norn beats on somebody too much, usually their victim slaps some sense back into them. Gaius isn't any more aggressive by default than any regular Norn, but he's very resistant to being slapped.
As Ghosthande posted on Ctopia this seems to explain why sometimes gaius flips out and starts acting more like a terminator then a cute bird-robot.

For those of you actually wondering what the heck happened to the run: status says it all. I just haven't wanted to play Creatures lately. Other things have been more pressing/more interesting. That, and I can't be bothered to make the predator right now (I've tried twice; neither attempt was satisfactory).
So yeah. Run's on hold indefinitely until I get motivated again.

Okay, now that the CC's beginning to show life again, I'm going to give this thing another go.
However, I'm really tempted to just restart this with the same norns, but in a different world. I really should have set the room up better before starting the run so I don't have to keep pausing it to make changes (best example: For all the praise I have for Devil's Reef...that lift really could have been coded better). That, and I'm still having no luck with the predator (trying to make it angry enough without pushing it to the point where the entire run goes down in flames is proving to be quite difficult).
If I do make a new world and restart the run, I'll export the current norns and put them up on TCR.
What do you guys think?

Restarting the wolfling run in a new world sounds fine to me. So does putting them up on TCR, I really look forward to being able to download them & add them to my various groups of creatures.
Out of curiosity, do you have Amaikokonut's Critical Hit agent added to the world? It can really help with improving the survival rate in a world with a killer creature. |

Okay, I've re-downloaded DR, created a few more patches for it (namely: added CAs and fixed the lift so grendels can use it properly). I've also come up with an idea that can be used for the predator (and will eventually become a breed, although the general members of said breed will be generally less aggressive than the predator).
However, I want to ask if all the people who submitted norns are still here or not. If not everyone's here, I might kick out the creatures owned by inactive members to make room for new contestants. Granted, the only one I'm wondering about is Jagotka, but still.

I'd hate to be a disappointment, but I'm calling the run off entirely. Ultimately, it was just too ambitious for me. None of my attempts at the predator came out the way I wanted them to, and there's other things I need to be working on other than this.
Your submissions are here if you're interested in downloading them.
Again, I apologize for not having the willpower for finishing this run. If I do another run, it'll be in the style of Belly of the Beast because it's far easier for me to do.
