C-Rex's thread on his agent collection made me wonder if there's an archive somewhere with ALL the cobs and agents and breeds ever made available for download. I think it would be SUCH a great idea if there were a place where people can go and download anything that was ever created, organized by game, type, creator, year, etc. Maybe this would be a good project for CCSF11?

I think this would be a fantastic project, although its magnitude kind of scares me! There are so many downloads that have been made available throughout the years. However, I think it would be helpful to at least get started: I use many different resources to find downloads, and it would be great if there was just one directory for quick access.
Doringo: The CCSF is about Creatures in general, and doesn't just focus on Norns. They usually steal the spotlight, but anything related to Creatures is fair game!

It's great that you were inspired by my list but unfortunately getting a collection of almost everything created for the creatures series and compiling it in a file has been attempted by many users and has unfortunately resulted in many COB authors not giving permission for their work to be hosted online. I find it quite selfish myself, because if that user's website closes down, then nobody in the community can access their COBs or breeds.
Still, you could attempt it, but you may get badmouthed by the authors. I'm not on the authors' side by the way. I personally wouldn't mind if somebody took the Big Fat Norns and Pink Strawberry Norns and put them in an archive, as long as they asked for my permission. |

There's been attempts at such archives before, but sadly some of these started hosting files without asking permission from the original creator, or linked to them directly without letting the visitors see the website they're downloading from. It left a bit of a sour taste.
Some authors also explicitly stated they do not want their agents anywhere at all even when they're gone.
The idea itself is inherently awesome though. A huge list of all known files and links to the websites where they are hosted. There could be comments, ratings, search tags, reviews,... If the list only points to the website and not the file itself, it would be great for getting visitors!
I think a big part of the charm of the CC is all the little websites people make for their things, it's almost unique to our community these days, since every other game and their cat have centralized mod download sites, without the charm of cute norn .gifs.
There actually is a site quite like it already:
"Where is the Agent?"
But what's missing is the sorting and the commenting and the Facebook Likes.... Someone should make that.

There's also the Creatures Wiki.
While its listing of C1 COBs is fairly extensive, the coverage of C2, C3 and DS isn't as full.

AquaShee's got it right, I think. It was pretty much what had come to my mind when I read the first post. I think that most authors would be willing to have their creations hosted 1) if there site really was down 2) we can get a hold of them (creators and creations). If you just point to the site for the download, there usually aren't any issues. The problem would be where to do it, and the wiki is a good option, if not the best one. The only downside to the wiki is that things are still getting lost. The archive would need to have the creations uploaded, but not available, so in the event of a site going down it isn't truly lost. The archive should also have several moderators to keep things going when one drops off the planet.
In regards to "Where is the Agent, if it had an English version and the commenting, "Likes" that AquaShee mentioned and it would be a HUGE step in the right direction.
