I've recently gotten back into playing Creatures after almost 7 years, and have been expanding my game with new breeds and agents I've found on people's websites.
The one thing that I've unfortunately noticed, and which saddens me greatly, is that a lot of the sites that once hosted breeds no longer exist.
I really can't even begin to imagine how many hours of work and hundreds of creations must have disappeared.
What I'm proposing is that we try to create one central website, database, whatever it may be, to preserve these creations.
I know that somewhere, someone has a breed, agent, or other community-made creation that no longer is available on the net.
It would be great if we could bring them back into the community as a whole for everyone to enjoy, but also so the original creator's legacy lives on rather than be lost forever.
If the Creature Repository is possible, I don't see why this couldn't be doable.
Anyone else think this could be a possibility or a good idea? |

the subject of Archiving has created quite a stir in the community, in the past; other people have attempted this in the past and have struggled to get permission from various creators.
With that in mind, be sure to remember to ask permission from the creators about their respective projects, since this also has caused some controversy in the past.
There's nothing that says you can't try though |

Hmm, I can see where this may become an issue. :/ I was thinking more along the lines of archiving works that no longer have a host anywhere, which in most cases the original creator has lost ownership of their domain.
I would think most creators would be happy to finally have a willing host to offer their creations for download. But I do understand that people who still have a website offering their creations would be unwilling to have their things offered up elsewhere. |

Some people who don't have their stuff online anymore are still unwilling to have their creations redistributed, even if the alternative is to have them lost to the community. That was the primary hitch last time; for many the ability to have their creations rehosted is not appealing, particularly if they fear losing control of where/when their stuff is redistributed.

I still say that if it's such a big deal to them, and they come across it, they could simply ask to have it taken down. Sure, one can ask permission where this is possible, but a lot of creators are no longer around and there's no known way of contacting them.
I know there's many who violently disagree with me on this, though. Oh well. |

Just a heads up to everyone, let's not turn this into another flame-war. this subject has been covered plenty of times already. the person was just asking for advice, so let's keep it friendly, okay? |

It's okay, everybody was sharing very valid points.
Tarlia basically took the words out of my mouth in a sense...
A lot of creators have moved on past the CC, have taken on new aliases, and can't be tracked down anymore. Personally it's their creations that I thought need to be preserved the most. If they did ever reappear and wanted their work taken down, that's fair.
I'm not trying to say that we should just mass-upload everything the CC has ever made and share it with everyone with no regard for the original creator... It's more of a preservation sort of thing. When a host disappears, their work disappears with it. Maybe it's because I do a lot of artwork, but I feel extremely sad when I think of people's work disappearing. Creating something for Creatures is hard work and takes a lot of dedication. It's a shame that it'd all be lost. |

Ah, I can see why you worry about this becoming a flame war. I have to say that I do mean all respect to the original creators and their right to refuse to have their work redistributed.
Like I said, many of the creators of certain agents and breeds have gone AWOL and no longer keep up with the CC. This isn't to make one giant downloadable file of everything, like the other OP suggested. It's more of an act of preserving innovations that would otherwise have been lost forever. |
