Thoughts on Creatures Village

I wanted to both share my opinion on Creatures Village and also hear (or read rather) other peoples opinions.

In my opinion Creatures Village is a very underated game in the Creatures series, while it is much simpler in the virtual life aspect, it has a clear goal to achieve, the Norns look very cute with their big heads and having the ears and hair as seperate sprites only adds to that, seeing a Norn with different ears that the rest of their body is hilariously cute.

The graphics are bright and colourful and the game is very kid friendly. (I've even got my 5 year old sister playing it!)

While definitely not as good as the core games it is definitely leagues above the Playstation games and the GBA game.

What do you think of Creatures Village?

Warning! I am likely to dispute any statements againts CV

I have not played it, and after seeing the trailers/intros, I doubt I will.

Any particular reasons though? What makes you want to stay away from it?

I love Creatures Village. :D Its a really cute and fun game. I love how you dress your norns, the cutesy appearance of the norns, and the puzzle elements of the game. (For example: The skeleton of the cave norn where you have to find the bones for.)
Also, the game is easy and relaxed, not like other Creatures games where you have to worry about your norns eating weeds or meeting the Grendel. :)
The only thing I disagree with is about Creatures Playstation. :/ I loved and still love that game, it was my first Creatures game EVER.

Part of the reason are the horrible trailers and intros that I watched. It also sounds very easy, which is the exact reason why I do not play Creatures 3.

I haven't played it much, but it seems cute. Although I do wish there were a way to slow things down a bit because everything seems to happen so fast. I can tell I'm going to have to practice my hand-eye coordination...

But it is really nice to be able to just click somewhere on the screen and my Norn comes right to my hand. Very "virtual pet" ish, but cute and awfully convenient.

I think Creatures Village is a great game, and a good break from all of the hard work you have to out in in the other games. My only complaints are that you can only have four Norns at a time, they are difficult to breed, and the background music doesn't work for some reason.

Some versions, including the GOG version, have a few missing features--there's no background music for me, either.

The original creature adventure-Creature playground have the music playing,
but sadly the original cd won't run on Xp machines (same goes for C3).
It seem the GoG is like the Xp edition - it have no music
(and lacking the parental option too, wich in there - you could adjust the music and sound volym in it )

The thing is - Creature village music is in fact midis - but they don't play as raw midi ingames,
now that wouldn't sound so nice XD (they can be found in the sound folder - some music can't be heard ingame,as they seem to be extras, pretty much like those extra sprites you find in various creatures games XD )

I myself enjoy this games -
It's pretty much as Melody said:
Relaxing,no worry and just enjoy the cute bright graphical world along with the super cute norns.
Also wanted to add: Love to see as it actuly Become Night and Day, Weather changes - summer/spring/autumn and winter!
(wich is a thing I sometime wish C2 could have ,as it may not
shown it graphical as CA-CP,
yet it kinda started the idea with the weather - season and temperature system)

Also like the thing that they don't keep walking after each other and kiss or hit each other all the time,
(as all the creature games,
not counting psx or GBA here)

And another welcome addon
they add in CP - when eating they actuly have a chew animation.

In general - CA/CP norns have
more expressions then the other creature games. They have 9!
normal - happy - very happy -
angry - very angry - sad - scared-
tired and sick.

(I once found a crying expression in the CP ones,
wonder if it was planed they would be able to cry..or maybe I haven't figured out yet how to O.o' )

while the other creatures games have only 6 expressions:
normal,happy,sad,angry,scared,
tired
(C1 is lacking scared and tired)

Also, hair and ears are seperate sprites..and if visiting the mad lab - you can change the hair
(or some or whole parts of the apperance of a norn in general - such as make a okapi become a bengal)

@ pyromaniac605: Different ears on a norn O.o how do you mean actuly? As far I know - breed two norns dosn't result in hair or ear difference - theyre offsprings ends up as in any creature game -
personality wise and some mixed head, arms, legs, body and tail sprites...but not ears and hair O.o
Could this be a thing added in the
GoG version?

Off topic: Im going to record the real CA/CP games music (from ingame,of course) and upload it on youtube and as a pack , I still have to get accese to my win ME,
cos that is the only pc wich run the originals.. I allready done a C1 pack, yet haven't uploaded on youtube yet, and is halfway with C3. Is probably doing DS too..
Oh and I was done with recording the c2 music..but have some probs..I rather post this up in it's own topic.

I like the simplicity of Creatures Village, especially because there really isn't a whole lot to manage or worry about. The expressions on the Norns are quite adorable, and I love how seemingly gigantic they seem in comparison to Norns in the other games! The mini-games and hidden extras are very fun to find, and the world always seems to be changing in some way!

I can spend some time playing the game, but find that it doesn't hold my attention as much as C1, C2, and C3. That's not to say it's a bad game: It's more of a different take on Norns, and one that is excellent for a younger audience.

I do recommend looking into it as a different way to enjoy Creatures, but it certainly is not like the main three games. Still, it's a game worth a try, and one that I think many people would enjoy for one reason or another!

Norngirl, I would love to hear the background music! I know I have it in one of the folders, but your idea of uploading it to YouTube seems a lot better. Good luck!

Regarding the sound it seems like the engine could be broken...

That's the thing with updates. Usually they break more than they fix. For example, the first update for Littlebig Planet broke the lock/copy opions for the my moon levels (which hasn't been fixed since) and the most recent broke emitters so they can no longer flip objects, only rotate them

I thought seeing Norns chewing their food was a nice touch, too. Surprised me a little the first time I saw it.

The lack of music isn't necessarily a problem with the engine itself, though. Without access to anything that displays the volume, I don't think it's possible to say if the music literally doesn't work, or if there just isn't any way to turn it up from inside the game. I've been fiddling with things a little already, trying to see if I can change that.

I remember I kept having that slightly annoying, chirpy background tune stuck in my head after playing Creatures Adventures. :P

That game kept me entertained for hours though. :) I used to love watching the seasons change, growing and harvesting vegetables throughout the year, so that my Norns would have enough to eat in the winter, and making sure each pair of Norns bred so the generations would carry on. Never played Creatures Playground.

One thing has been annoying me in CV lately after you leave the house, then you go right you eventually see a cave (not as far as the dinosaurs) is there anyway to get inside that cave? It looks like you can go inside. :S

Edit: Possible Spoiler Alert!
I figured out why the hair is a seperate sprite, if you go to the caves get a Norn to stand on the little pressure plate on the floor and press it, at the far right side of the lab there is a hair machine! :P

Also in the lab is a body part changer, a pigment changer, and another machine which I'm afraid to touch. (After all the sign say Norn + Potion = Spinning Top!)

Edit2: That and there are the hats. :P

Good game, but if you have Creatures Playground, this weird machine thing with a propeller that makes a rubbery noise will sometimes come down and take your Norn's hair away! It really scared me at first, and sometimes still does. :o And I'm the sort that would offer a scary-looking cyborg chocolate...

I only have CA, not CP. I wish I had CP too, though. As for the background music, I had it until I tried my hand at agent making and had to reinstall the game. (Notice I don't have any COBs for download on my website! ;)) Now the music is GONE! Oh, and I learned to play that "annoying tune" on the piano. I am quite good at it, much to the disgust of my piano instructor. :) My BFF loves CA, though and asks to play it every time she comes over! :)

I thought it was decent for a Creatures game. It was very simple, so kids can play it without any trouble, but its almost too kiddy.

CV is nice, it has nice graphics and bright colors, it's great for kids, even older ones than me :) It has got nice games too, and cute clothes. But there's something I don't like about it, and that's it there's no option of directly deleting world and it's not possible to export Norns. Otherwise game is made very well.

I'm a hardcore christian first, and a creature breeder second.

=Spoilers=
The toy machine is also required to get one of the puzzle piece. Turn your norn into a mouse by using the blue potion and it will run into the crack in the wall into another room. ;)

=Spoilers=
That cave near the dragon is one of the unlockables used to get a puzzle piece from the dragon by scaring it away with the caveman norn. ;)

Unlike the original sequels, CV is more focused on the game play than breeding. (Creatures Online too, is more CV like than the original Creatures sequel, that might be the reason they rename the game from C4 to CO). There's no real hazardous environment to worry about. And we don't need to pay any attention to the Ecosystem. Even if we messed with the weather system food will never runs out. Norn who's sick simply stay sick until you focus your camera on them, the heli-thingy will then take them to the medical area. As far from my experience, they won't die from sickness, just old age.

There's more "SAM" (Secret Adventure Mode) in CV compared to the original sequels and most "Toys" are for the players instead.

Apart from the Norn Colouring, Sprite Changing, etc from the secret entrance in the Cave, There's a boutique in game that holds quite a lot of clothing stuffs too! Some other clothings are by completing games/clicking on hidden spots.

There's also the Hidden Caveman Norn and Alien if you can find them. (Both can be dressed up too!) ;)

But if asked if it's kid friendly, the answer is no. There's too few instructions in the game to tell you what to do and how to do imo.. only a very very smart kid/bored kid with lots of time can figure out what are the tools for without being backed up by their parents beside the PC.

And oh, there's still no "fix" for the missing music in game as far as i can tell. For all these years, GOG should have done something about it but they didn't. There's a forum post in GOG claiming that someone managed to "fix" the sound but he's not willing to tell how.

The work-around for the music part is to set it in Win98 Compatibility mode and hit Ctrl+Shift+Del as soon as you start the game.

As for the PS version, well... even if the game play is so, so... But remember that they do have the best BGM compared to all Creatures series. ;)

I remember it being a huge hassle to get to work on newer computers--I still remember all the eye-rolling my dad did whenever I asked him to help me fix the broken installation yet again. [nlaugh]

All things considered, though, I REALLY liked it as a kid, and thinking about it now I miss it a little! I liked the emphasis on exploring and the fact that your Norns would be safe just about anywhere, as opposed to the other games where you had to work to make an area hospitable, but I guess that's part of the challenge. The gardens and the outfits were a nice touch and the secrets were really cute. The original games were too hard and scary for me when CV came out, so it was a good fit for me (and presumably other kids) at the time.

The hot dog machine in Creatures Playground always made me hungry...

personally i loved creatures village and still do, i love the haunted house, the little fishing rod in the swamp, going up into the clouds. sure it was a bit more colourful and simple then what the other games were but it was fun anyway.
it still had the same effect on my sister who cried when she realised one of the norns was getting old.

my only problem with the game was that damn flying machine coming down and stealing the norns hair D:<

You actually can get the music playing in Creatures Village, but it requires setting the game compatibility mode to either Windows 95 or Windows 98, and pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE just as the game is starting up. There's a 50/50 chance of this working though, most of the time it will just crash. :P

Strangely enough, I downloaded it and got it working soundtrack and all last night with no hiccups or compatibility finangling. I'm using Windows 7.

Only now do I realize how noisy those games were! I like the soundtrack, I just wish clicking on an agent you can't activate didn't play a Bozo-getting-crushed-by-a-semi sound effect every single time. Still though, it's nice and relaxing, even if the camera is a little wonky.

Tried mine in Vista, the game plays smooth enough without any crashes but the sound and parental control isn't there.

The game is noisy enough without the BGM imo.. most agents that play sound doesn't have a stop button. lol!

Noticed that the wiki and google doesn't have much infos on the hidden stuffs so i might just fill them up here.
