Pyromaniac605's topic has inspired me to ask:
? How has the Creatures Community changed, compared to when you first joined?
? What are your thoughts on the community's current state?
? What things do you think have boosted the community since Gameware's lack of activity?
? How do you see us moving forward (or not, as the case may be) from here?
? Will the community naturally dwindle without any official new releases, or is our fanbase and the third-party addons at our disposal (with the potential to create more) enough to keep us alive and kicking?
? Say you had three wishes, from a Shee genie, how would you change the community?
This is just a hypothetical discussion if anything. I'm just very interested to read your what if's and ponderings. |

• How has the Creatures Community changed, compared to when you first joined?
Most of the websites I once knew are now down, the fanbase is much smaller.
• What are your thoughts on the community's current state?
I would desribe it as an aging Norn, you can keep injecting it with Life, but eventually it will fade away.
• What things do you think have boosted the community since Gameware's lack of activity?
The few remaining forums, the fan-made breeds, COBs etc.
• How do you see us moving forward (or not, as the case may be) from here?
From what I understand Gameware has said that there is a market for a new Creatures, but they have nobody to publish such a game, we could petition them to make a new game, if there is enough interest they will find I publisher. (hopefully)
• Will the community naturally dwindle without any official new releases, or is our fanbase and the third-party addons at our disposal (with the potential to create more) enough to keep us alive and kicking?
I think the fans should be able to keep the CC alive for a few more years, but without official support the CC won't last much longer than that.
• Say you had three wishes, from a Shee genie, how would you change the community?
I would wish:
That a Creatures game would be created, faithful to the old games, still 2D but largely improved.
Many of the fans who have left would remember the games, and become part of the community again.
The CCSF continues for many years to come.

Wow, you really are a saddened fan, Pyromaniac605.
• How has the Creatures Community changed, compared to when you first joined?
When I first joined in 2003, I didn't venture from Creatures Caves, if I'm honest. This site has everything a Creatures fan could ever want. However, I do remember more activity, where new topics would be posted throughout the day and there were definitely more oldbies around. Saying that, whilst the forums may not be as active, I'm happy to see new members joining us on a regular basis.
• What are your thoughts on the community's current state?
While there's been no word on a publisher for the elusive Creatures 4, and Gameware has kept quiet on that front, I can't help but think that the community is still doing okay.
No news of any new official releases may have left some feeling disheartened, but I take comfort in the fact that when Creature Labs first closed in 2003, the community still held strong and we pulled through on our own merit and efforts, and I think we have continued to do so ever since the closure of Gameware's forums in 2008.
You only have to look at the History page, on the Creatures Wiki, to see how resilient we are.
• What things do you think have boosted the community since Gameware's lack of activity?
Well, I think the annual CCSF and the development of various third-party projects has certainly helped to hold people's interest and keep things fresh and exciting - collectively we've made good out of our situation by making our own new releases. Plus of course, the recent release of the games on GOG.com have re-sparked some interest and attracted new people. |

• How has the Creatures Community changed, compared to when you first joined?
Let's see... Gameware's gone to the dogs, a bunch of good websites no longer exist, and it's quieted down to almost unacceptable levels.
• What are your thoughts on the community's current state?
To be honest, I don't think the community has anywhere to go but down. Gameware just doesn't care any more, and all the good developers either got consumed by RL or found greener pastures to call home. Nowadays, what's left of the CC might as well be inhabited by spambots. :S
• What things do you think have boosted the community since Gameware's lack of activity?
I don't know, honestly. Perhaps the few stellar releases here and there.
• How do you see us moving forward (or not, as the case may be) from here?
See what I said about the Community's current state. It's downhill from here. Sure, there will be a few moments where interests peak, but eventually we'll all call it quits and leave the CC to rot.
• Will the community naturally dwindle without any official new releases, or is our fanbase and the third-party addons at our disposal (with the potential to create more) enough to keep us alive and kicking?
I definitely don't think the fanbase is capable of keeping the community afloat, so it depends on the degree of the addons. To survive, we need a big honking release akin to Aquatilis Caverna at least monthly.
• Say you had three wishes, from a Shee genie, how would you change the community?
1. Bring back all the good developers - the ones that made amazing things and helped others make amazing things.
I'll be brutally honest; half the ideas presented these days are utterly stupid, and there's almost no people who aren't handicapped in one way or the other (for example, I can't sprite). It doesn't help that the people that are self-sufficient in the development department would much rather work on their own projects rather than help others.
2. Restore Gameware to the way it was back in the CC's glory days: an active place filled with Creatures discussion. It was disappointing to say the least to see it turn to a spammer's paradise and then fade out of existence.
3. Make sure the next CCSF is as great as they come. In my opinion, the 2006 CCSF was the last good one. 2007 was a major letdown; 2008, even more so. 2009 was only marginally better than the previous years, and 2010 was only half the festival the best ones were (and should have ended 6 weeks ago). I'd love it if we could have another great CCSF.
------
No, I am not a pessimist; I am a realist. Let's face it, the CC is only a few shattered fragments that lost their luster years ago. The only reason that I stick around is because I have nowhere else to go at the moment.

• How has the Creatures Community changed, compared to when you first joined?
Everything seems a lot calmer and quieter. It seems like most of the members I remember causing flamewars and harassing other people aren't here anymore, but the same is true of some people I really liked.
• What are your thoughts on the community's current state?
It's surviving for now, but I think it just isn't going to be quite enough in the long run. If this community gets too much calmer it may just stagnate completely.
• What things do you think have boosted the community since Gameware's lack of activity?
The CCSF's are probably the best thing, along with any other fanmade projects (especially large ones, like C1toDS/C2toDS). I agree that the GOG releases are definitely a big help, both to draw in new people and give existing members a new chance to play the older games.
• How do you see us moving forward (or not, as the case may be) from here?
If the community continues at the same rate it's going, I don't think there is much of a future for it. I can see the community lasting another ten years in one form or another, but not remotely as large as it is now.
• Will the community naturally dwindle without any official new releases, or is our fanbase and the third-party addons at our disposal (with the potential to create more) enough to keep us alive and kicking?
I think fanmade content is a necessity. Really, there's only so much you can get out of waiting for new mutations to crop up before you've had enough, but adding new content keeps the game interesting and gives it novelty. But little releases (like that "Fun In The Sun" agent pack) only generate a little novelty--it would take large projects, like the old Metacore projects, to keep the community stable and healthy.
Short of Gameware miraculously deciding to step in and liven things up, I think the best chance Creatures-type games have would be a new, Creatures-like open source game such as Lifandi, if someone ever decides to step up to the plate and make things happen.
• Say you had three wishes, from a Shee genie, how would you change the community?
I agree that my first wish would be for the CCSF's to be really great. My second wish would be part of the first--to have more great developers active in the community, like there used to be. The third one would, naturally, be for there to be a Creatures 4. I can't think of anything that would help as much as that would.

Oh dear... What morose monster have I created here? I'm back from work, so I'll carry on from where I left off:
• How do you see us moving forward (or not, as the case may be) from here?
I think the community will continue to plod on, regardless of any C4/official release. That's just my view - we've managed to move along steadily for so long, what evidence is there to suggest that suddenly, the community's "death" is certain, and that new players will no longer find us and become interested?
It's true, a lot of good websites have gone down, but then with some of those sites, the content has been salvaged and backed up (Bibbleworld, for example).
• Will the community naturally dwindle without any official new releases, or is our fanbase and the third-party addons at our disposal (with the potential to create more) enough to keep us alive and kicking?
Most of us still have a soft spot for the Creatures series. Most of us grew up with it, for some of us being in the community has been a considerable part of our lives. So long as that passion is there, so long as Creatures is enjoyed, so long as new people keep discovering Creatures, so long as people (new and old) keep developing, I think we still have some longevity - enough to send any idea of dying out of the airlock.
• Say you had three wishes, from a Shee genie, how would you change the community?
My first wish would be for an official release, because regardless of whether our community needs one or not, it would still be nice! Failing that, to have C2toDS (no pressure, Moe!) released in oder to boost morale.
My second wish would be that new members continue to join, and contribute some fantastic things that will be a great benefit to our community.
My third and final wish would be that more people have faith in the community. Sorry to be the irritatingly optimist one of the group, (you love me really ) but I really believe that if we go around thinking "the community is going to die, the community is dead" then of course, it will! With that mindset we won't have the drive to keep it going anymore. It's down to us, guys.

• How has the Creatures Community changed, compared to when you first joined?
------
Well, I think its pretty much the been the same with the exception of new members. Also, I've made some friends over the years on here.
-------
• What are your thoughts on the community's current state?
------
I think its been holding up pretty well. With less active members you can feel that you can know the members here better. What I'm trying to say is that Creatures Caves (and the rest of the Creatures Community) is like a family.
-----
• What things do you think have boosted the community since Gameware's lack of activity?
------
People developing COBs, Agents, Breeds, and just development for the Creatures games in general.
Plus, the dedicated members AND the new members.
-----
• How do you see us moving forward (or not, as the case may be) from here?
------
I see a future of more development for the Creatures games, new members joining, some leaving. The Creatures Community would be active as other communities are, but it wouldn't be dying either. (with all the new members and dedicated members)
-------
• Will the community naturally dwindle without any official new releases, or is our fanbase and the third-party addons at our disposal (with the potential to create more) enough to keep us alive and kicking?
-----
I think the fanbase and all the third-party downloads is enough to keep the Creatures Community alive.
------
• Say you had three wishes, from a Shee genie, how would you change the community?
------
Well, I think the community is perfect as it is, but I'll think of something.
1. Well, if people are going to have a bad outlook on the Creatures Community, it is going to die. :/
So... I just wish people had a little optimism here.
2. Maybe some new breeds and genetic breeds, to give the community a little kick.
3. I have no idea, sorry. Dx Wait... NEW MEMBERS. (not that I'm not happy with the old ones here. "hugs"
-----
Sorry if that was a little confusing, I didn't know really what to say. I gave it my best shot... so... I'm happy.

Instead of answering the questions, i decided to go a different direction
Let's see, my thoughts on the community, I honestly don't get all the pessimism from some of you, Yeah the community isn't incredibly huge, but i think it's doing doing alright considering how old the game
actually is.
I also don't see the community as going "downhill", people still play DS often enough and content is being made for it,still so it's doing alright.
Well, i guess that will be the longest i'll ever rant

1. It hasn't changed that much when I arrived. I came a little later on so I haven't been among a huge timeframe.
2. I think it's improved. More people join us and it hardly seems empty.
3. I think the community itself. Everyone working on new ideas and projects. It gets others inspired to do the same and everyone gets interested.
4. Possibly. I'm not sure, but I doubt we'll drop. We also have Steve Grand's new upcoming game that is similar to Creatures that might get people interested.
5. I'm sure our fanbase is quite strong, but I know sometimes new releases get people interested in playing more again.
6. I hope we can get even more people, and that maybe new and amazing ideas can be developed. And, by some crazy off chance, a new game could possibly be made based on a new planet.

• How has the Creatures Community changed, compared to when you first joined?
Being a relatively new member, I can't say that too much has changed over the last few months. Perhaps some aspects have slowed down a bit, but I do notice that there's usually something new or interesting going on. I suppose that the community is much more in-depth than it once was: Casual gamers don't seem to be a major part of the community, but that's most likely attributed to the fact that the series isn't very common.
• What are your thoughts on the community's current state?
After reading some of the responses, I'm shocked at the bleak outlook. Sure, Creatures is an older game without official support and it's more of a niche game than a mass market game. But consider the fact that C1 came out over 12 years ago, and the health of the community can't be ignored. Are there things that could be done differently? Of course. Yet I think that our collective mindset and spirit need to be somewhat optimistic about the future. With the games available at GOG, Creatures can be enjoyed by a much larger audience than the original players. I think there are many opportunities out there, and we just need to identify them and understand where we want the community to go. I was never a member of the community, but I hope my blog has inspired some to enjoy Creatures even more. I grew up with this series, as many of us did, and I think we need to focus on that passion and attachment as we move forward.
• What things do you think have boosted the community since Gameware's lack of activity?
Although I don't have any experience with the Gameware forums, I think this boils down to a lack of official presence. It's all about the community: Whatever we put in, we ultimately get back. If the general attitude is that the community is going downhill and will disappear soon, it will. I tend to think that everyone wants to be connected for a very long time, and make sure that Creatures stays alive. Additions, creations, and even stories seem to boost the community. Maybe we need more collective events to bring us together and show what we're really capable of.
• How do you see us moving forward (or not, as the case may be) from here?
I would love to identify some opportunities for growing the community. We need to figure out ways to draw in new members, as well as understand what keeps the current members active and interested. In a way, perhaps we're a little too fragmented, in that only the CCSF and a handful of projects bring us together a lot. I find my time is usually spent checking for updates, which are often sparse. Remember that the Creatures base games got us here: There are countless ways that the games can be modified and enjoyed. On the same token, there are countless ways that the community can come together.
• Will the community naturally dwindle without any official new releases, or is our fanbase and the third-party addons at our disposal (with the potential to create more) enough to keep us alive and kicking?
I think official new releases would be absolutely wonderful, and if we could somehow get Gameware or a similar company involved, it could give us the boost we seem to need. However, I think realistically we've been on our own for some time, and that we will be for the foreseeable future. With that said, though, I think we have a lot of potential to give ourselves the boost of energy and optimism we truly need.
• Say you had three wishes, from a Shee genie, how would you change the community?
This is a tough one! It's not so much that I would want to change the community, but more of the outlook and plans of the community. We don't seem to have a vision for where we're going... I know that when I started playing Creatures again, I would have been very upset if I was virtually alone. I can't stress enough how important and interesting the games are, and I wish that everyone in the community could be as excited and passionate about Creatures. All in all, I want the community to get on a path to surviving long into the future with a happy, fulfilled member base. Must we grow tremendously? Not at all: Growth is important, but even more so is making sure that our current members want to stick around.

How has the Creatures Community changed, compared to when you first joined?
Oh man, where do I begin? SIZE, for starters; the community felt so much bigger back in the late 90s. There was a whole other energy level going on back then, too (which the size helped, I admit). Even though the COBs and breeds were arguably simpler, I feel like there was more heart in them somehow... or maybe I'm just playing with memory; I still get warm fuzzy feelings when I look over SteerPike's stuff. Oh, and you couldn't throw a virtual rock in the CC without hitting fanfiction.
I think what's changed the most, though, is the sense of exploration that I felt a lot of members had. People were still discovering how CAOS worked, how to make COBs and breeds and hacks that expanded the game. I feel like a lot of that ended around the time DS arrived. I'm not sure why, because DS offered its own code to explore (and people still explore that game to see just where the limits lay), but it somehow feels different nonetheless.
I'll close for now with the thought that I had a lot more faith in the state of the community when CL/Gameware was more involved with it.
What are your thoughts on the community's current state?
I won't outright say we're dying, because we've lasted this long and I don't see the group vanishing anytime soon, but I think the community's been "stuck" for a very long time now. I think it's fair to say we're struggling: struggling to maintain numbers, struggling to maintain interest.
What things do you think have boosted the community since Gameware's lack of activity?
The CCSF has helped, but to be honest I don't think anything's properly "boosted the community" since the closure of the forums.
How do you see us moving forward (or not, as the case may be) from here?
I... don't know. I don't really think about it (maybe I try not to think about it). This place, however it's changed internally, has been a constant in my life for 13 years now. While, realistically, I don't see the community moving forward unless something HUGE happens, publisher-wise, I once again don't see it disappearing either.
Will the community naturally dwindle without any official new releases, or is our fanbase and the third-party addons at our disposal (with the potential to create more) enough to keep us alive and kicking?
...I think it's enough for us, the majority of the remaining group, but I don't think it's nearly enough to draw in a ton of new players and keep them here.
I think we'll continue to dwindle, sadly, but I do see new users coming in at times, so I haven't lost all hope yet.
Say you had three wishes, from a Shee genie, how would you change the community?
1) Wish for a pool of funds that would allow a responsible group of players to buy the rights to the series.
2) Allow for the community to develop the next chapter in the series and find publisher to help us get the game out to the public.
3) ???
4) Profit!
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

• How has the Creatures Community changed, compared to when you first joined?
Unfortunately, the community has gradually shrunk. However, several dedicated players, new and old, have kept the community going.
• What are your thoughts on the community's current state?
To be completely honest, I'm terribly afraid of the community dying altogether. The CC is no doubt the best online community I've ever been involved in. Ever. In almost every other community I've been in, there has been a lot of bad-mouthing. I simply do not see that in the CC.
• What things do you think have boosted the community since Gameware's lack of activity?
GOG.com's recent pick-up has definitely improved community growth. Also, I think that word-of-mouth from Creatures fans to non-fans has helped, too.
• How do you see us moving forward (or not, as the case may be) from here?
To be honest, I'm not sure how to answer that question. The only way I could see the CC moving forward would be an increase in commercial promotion. It's getting to that point that's the problem.
• Will the community naturally dwindle without any official new releases, or is our fanbase and the third-party addons at our disposal (with the potential to create more) enough to keep us alive and kicking?
I'm not sure. I can see either way, but I think that the CC is more likely to go completely stagnant. Our growth is seriously stunted, but our "core" fans can keep it going.
• Say you had three wishes, from a Shee genie, how would you change the community?
1. A complete return of Creatures Labs, with all the old developers we love.
2. I would wish for Creatures to become more mainstream, but not sold out.
3. A larger social networking presence (CC must grow first).
