Note: This is the same post as that at Albia2000, I copied it here because it seems that Creaturecaves is more active.
Hi guys, I'm 14 years old but, unlike most of my friends, I love to play games that don't have to involve shooting and violence, but I don't hate them.
Back in 2006 and 7 I was a huge Docking Station fan, naturally I wanted more, so over time I bought all the official breeds, and eventually, creatures 3.
I had lots of fun downloading third party add-ons and even had a go for myself when I made a oversized vendor that dispened horribly drawn cheese.
Creatures was eventually lost to me as I moved and started getting computer trouble, but a few weeks ago it suddenly snapped back into my mind, I couldn't stop thinking about it, I had to start playing again, so I reinstalled Docking Station and Creatures 3 and got back into it.
But I found myself wanting more, I couldn't remember my account for the Mall, so I went to go buy them again, to my surprise (and annoyance) the website was down.
So I instead went in search of some of the fabulous fan made add-ons, but I found that many of the websites I used to love are now down, while I was gone the fanbase seemed to have fallen apart at the seems.
So I find myself here needing some help getting up to speed on the current situation, what has happened in all this time?
Darren
Edit: I hope I can become a regular member of the community while also trying to help however I can to keep the fanbase alive.
Edit2: I have never played C1 or 2 because they are almost impossible to find. (In Australia anyway)
Edit3: I just realised The Albian years is on gog.com, should I buy it, how different is C1/2 to C3/DS?

Hi there and welcome! I'm glad you're back into Creatures, it's quite fun. C3/DS were the first of the games I've played as well, not counting the Playstation version.
I heard C1 and C2 are very good, and even more challenging than C3/DS, so I think you should buy them. I've been wanting to get them myself eventually.

The Albian Years is only $5 USD on gog.com so I guess I'll buy them.
I'm thinking of relearning CAOS and getting into making agents, breeds are more interesting to me, but AFAIK there isn't a simple tutorial to making one.

I don't know about others, but I prefer C1 to C3/DS in every way. I made a long thread comparing the two. I have never played C2, but I hear it makes a great middle ground betwixt C1 and C3/DS. You should really get them.
Oh, and I almost forgot. 'Allo. |

Hello Darren, welcome back. I hope you enjoy it here!
I would definitely recommend Creatures 1 and Creatures 2 if you want a more challenging, richer gaming experience, with a more "hands on" approach - different to what you're used to in Creatures 3 and Docking Station. See the topic that Harlequinade posted, Creatures 1 > Creatures 3 for more opinions.
As for things you've missed... Recently, we've had our annual celebration, the CCSF 2010, with some new and exciting downloads and articles on offer from our fellow community members.
There are also some great projects on the go, such as C2toDS. You can download the C2toDS base here.
Not forgetting, we now have CC Chat, a new chatroom for the community to talk about Creatures, reminisce, or just have a good natter!

Thank you all for the warm welcome (back), good to see that CCSF is still running, that always brought some of the best metarooms, breeds, agents etc.
As for the C1/2 and C3 issue after reading Harlequinade's thread I am starting to like the idea of having less Norns but getting to know them better.
Just one question though, in C3 I love breeding through many generations to get some funky looking coloured norns, do Creatures 1 or 2 have a similar pigment system?
I'm definitely going to buy The Albian Years, it's only $5 so I might as well.
Back to the topic of the collapsing fanbase, what exactly happened to cause the fanbase to shrink and websites to go down? Was it Creature Labs going out of business?

I don't think there's really any one thing that can be blamed for the fact that the Creatures Community is shrinking. Creatures Labs going out of business probably didn't help, and I'm certain Gameware's lack of activity and removal of the GW forums couldn't have helped either.
But, truthfully, the series is fifteen years old now. The last game (Docking Station) was released ten years ago. That's a long time. It wouldn't be very realistic to assume that all players would stick close to the fanbase for the rest of their lives, it's only natural that some will drift away with time, even as some new faces show up.
Without new games or new life kits/object packs/breed packs being released, it isn't really a "living" series anymore. So I think it's just the natural way of things that the Creatures Community is going to gradually dwindle over time.

So really the only things keeping it together are the few remaining forums and the few COBs, Breeds etc being released.
It'd pretty annoying that they aren't making a new game, that would clearly fix things. (for a while at least)
