I went to visit GOG.com just now, for my daily browse, and was met with this message:
Dear GOG users,
We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We've debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.
We're very grateful for all support we've received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.
This doesn't mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We're closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.
On a technical note, this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.
All the best,
GOG.com Team
I wonder what will happen next for GOG... Whether it's closed indefinitely, or whether it has plans to come back.
I think it'd be a shame for our community if it were to close indefinitely, since many people have bought and rediscovered the Creatures series (not to mention us) from there recently.
I guess we'll also be putting any petitions for the release of the breed packs on hold for now. |

Aww shoot, what a shame. I am wondering as to why they are closing though. I mean they seem to have a large amount of customers which should have kept them afloat. |

Goddamnit, I hadn't bought some of the games I wanted to buy.
That's really depressing. I hope they come back better than ever soon.

Urg flabber buh!
It seemed like completely new players were actually discovering the series, so it is a real shame to see it go. I wonder what a new version of GOG would be like.. |

There's a lot of skepticism on their Facebook page, and looking closely at their homepage I can understand why.
"We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is."
"we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form."
GOG as we knew it seems to be gone, but they seem to go out of their way to suggest that something will remain. Some of the commenters are suggesting that it is just a marketing stunt with very bad taste (the tone does sound a bit like one), or that they may be switching to a different system, possibly one that may require a login in order to play the games.
Whatever's going on, their timing really sucks. I just finally got the money to buy Albian Years and Village, and now this happens... D:

Update: Good Old Games spokesman Tom Ohle gave this comment to Kotaku: "As the message on the site says, this doesn't mean GOG is gone. We'll have more to share in the coming days."
Signs point to a potential relaunch of the service. Good Old Games had always carried a "beta" tag. This Polish financial news page, translated, (Good Old Games' owner is Warsaw-based CD Projekt) indicates news is coming on Wednesday. [Thanks to Kotaku reader jayntampa for the link.]

Wowie-zowie, I had some... pretty lucky timing when I got the albian years. Just two days ago I really hope they come back, there's still some stuff I wanted to pick up. |

That's strange, there wasn't any sign of difficulty at all. I'm happy that I have the dpwnloaded games backed up on my external hard-drive.
I think they'll come back, but they will offer future downloads in DRM-format.
EDIT: A surprise for other webmasters, they've been using Microsoft Frontpage to create that notice. Why are they using such an amateurish and outdated application?

This, except with much more swearing. I was going to wait until I bought a new laptop to buy the Vista-compliant version of The Albian Years. Fffffffffffffffffffff-
Here's hoping Wednesday's news is good news and the site comes back in some form so I can actually grab the damn thing.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

Based on the video I saw last night, probably.
On the one hand, it makes me want to throttle them if that's the case, but on the other hand I'll just be so relieved that they're back and I can actually buy the games I was eyeing that I likely won't care.
ETA: I've also been reading blurbs from people involved in the game industry that GOG is, indeed, going to start utilizing DRM. Which sucks. If it turns out that's the case, I hope they at least keep some games DRM-free; why the f#@k would you need to put DRM on a Creatures game?

Am I the only one who thinks they could've handled this better? A prior warning about the closure would've been nice, instead of being taken by surprise.
And yeah, that is a bummer if they are going to start utilizing DRM. I buy the games fair and square, and so I'd like to be able to have a physical copy on disk - especially since you can't buy the games they offer on the High Street. |

Update:
The new website of GOG.com is waiting to be opened, showing a countdown. This confirms that there is coming a new era for GOG.com.
I wonder why they have chosen this way to announce their end of the beta stage.

Yeah, that scam was baaad. Just got the email:
Hi all,
As you could observe in the last couple days the GOG.com service was down and we kept everything what was happening in secret. After today's online conference everything became clear - GOG.com is not closing, but it's coming back even better and stronger than ever with great new features and huge new releases.
We know some of you might felt deceived by us playing jerks and the whole action and we sincerely apologize for this, as that was not our intention. Hopefully the new GOG.com and the upcoming releases from Hasbro will make it up for you. ... The new website will be open for everyone starting from Thursday, September 23 at 8 a.m. EDT

"Bad idea" is a gross understatement concerning my opinion of this "trick". >:C
