I recently emailed gameware about if they would ever continue creatures. Apparently they have had several ideas, but nobody to produce them. If we ever see another sequel, we can expect it on facebook or as an app for some peice of apple technology. (I hope they go for facebook if they do, because I am not buying a piece of apple technology just for one app.)

I am honestly, personally, SO tired of Facebook/Myspace/Twitter related things.
I'd like to see a real game come out. I mean, take a look at spore. People love pets, animals, virtual life, AI, and "other worlds."

I'm torn between "Yay they still remember the series!" and "...Facebook?!" :/
So, basically, what Karias just said.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

I also agree with Karias. Saying that a sequel would be an app or another Facebook game is about the same as saying they're paring it down to a Saturday morning cartoon--this does not sound like a revival of the series we love so much as a weak attempt to cash in on the last dregs of interest with a cheap knockoff. Do you really think something along the lines of FarmVille or Fish World would do Creatures justice?
Sorry but I'm putting my bets on whatever Steve Grand is working on.

I agree with most of what everyone else has said. The idea that it would be mobile is absurd! Sure, mobile is part of the future, but it is not THE future. There will ALWAYS be a place for good old fashioned games, be they on computer or console.
Facebook and Mobile devices CANNOT do the series justice. Creatures is not some "NornVille" pet sim. It's a high-end artificial life game fueled by advanced technology and bio-simulation methodologies, with a rich history and mythos. You can't make some superficial POS online or phone game and pretend to call it Creatures; that would be ridiculous.
Unlike Officer however, I'm not torn at all. I know how I feel about this. I'd rather they forget about the series than destroy it. |

Edit: Lulz. Nevermind.
Just to clarify, when I said "Yay, they remember the series!" it was more of a joyous exclamation over the idea that they're still considering the series, period. But if all of their considerations are in this mobile/Facebook direction, then I'd almost rather they just drop it entirely.
I say "almost" because there's still the lingering, probably futile hope that if they did do some sort of Facebook app that it might get popular enough to spark the creation of a more, um, "suitable" game for the series.

This is true, however the people it would attract would not be of the character our community is built upon, and the subsequent game would need to match the cheesy facebook or mobile application's style and purpose. A publisher isn't going to see a popular superficial pet sim and then fund a high-end artificial life game. They're just going to make a bigger pet sim. -.- Thus, the series destroyed.
If Creatures cannot merit production in it's classic and enduring style in this market and decade, then it is better left to simmer until a time when it can. |

...True. :c
I'd be especially PO'ed if they went the Facebook route, though, because I actually disabled my account months ago for a number of reasons and this wouldn't be enough to drag me back onto that network.

*Insert generic "What everyone else said" statement here*
To be more specific there, what Moe said. Gameware's better off either forgetting about the series or handing it off to someone who knows what they're doing rather than take 10 steps backward by turning what was previously a highly advanced, very customizable game into a crappy Facebook doodad or Apple app that no one can do squat for.

Facebook? They might as well just make one of those little ball-maze games you get at the bank. O.o
An iPhone app could demonstrate decent AL technology, but the customization potential would be so limited as to render it a glorified Creatures PS1 sequel nonetheless.
Considering the processing power of modern PCs it is almost offensive that they consider an "app" instead. But I guess it is for profit, and this is "the future of gaming" :/
Just don't expect me to stick around when Facebook users start flooding the forums. |

A Facebook app wouldn't fit into the series, but a mobile-version sounds okay to me.
I always wanted to take my creatures with me, even if it is a whole other gameplay. They could make a "download center" where you can download new 3rd-party extensions.
Or they make Creatures run off the cloud. Run the game from your flashdrive or browser client, and log into your account. And then you'll see your world where you played with on an other computer!
It may sound a bit futuristic and infeasible, but portable gaming gets more importance in the gaming world.

There'd be a distinct lack of the charm and sustenance we're all used to in a social networking or mobile phone app.
However, there is possibly one upside I can forsee. Such a release would bring more people's attention to Creatures, and then those people might become interested enough to check out the REAL games for themselves. I think Docking Station would have some appeal, because it's free and can be easily expanded.
Try and look at the positives, that's all we can really do. |

At this point in time we only have a handfull of people playing DS and it could use a lot more people,
If more people were to play DS and Creatures games in general maybe the possibility of a sequel might be greater, even if it would be through some Facebook app. |

I'd hate to see Creatures as a Facebook app. They're always so tacky and poorly made, not to mention having to pay just to buy a few pixels on a computer screen! |

Exactly, I always found people on Habbo stupid because they pay 2 euros for a single piece of furniture (a.k.a. pixels) with no functionality.
While I play games on Facebook when I'm very bored, I'll never pay for something with no purpose.

And when the game server shuts down (which it will eventually) what will happen to the stuff you paid for then? |

You're missing the point, i meant if Creatures on a different medium would attract members, that could help too, doesn't matter if it's Facebook, Mobile app, whatever. |

I know, its lame that they wont consider the creatres 4 of our dreams. If they do it as an app though, they should do it right, such as having the vanilla game available as an app, but retain the Developer and genetics tools as buyable for a small price, so we get a creatures game done right, but not just any random person can make a breed and title it "Ololo I haz breed"

This is.. disturbing.
OTOH, it does have the potential to attract the sort of people we need in the community. Hopefully the others will just get bored and leave, or make their own forums. |
