Two of the three original background models used to create the background image of Creatures 1 have been put up for auction, presumably by Gameware (mentioned on Cwiki by Dylan Banarse): Garden scene (terrible photo, see above) Statue of Liberty underwater scene They are similar to the norn-home model (a better photos) that - last I saw - was on display in Gameware's meeting room. They cost £5000 each back in ~1995. This is crazy . . . I've heard of owning a piece of history, but these are 90 cubic feet of history each. And therein lies the problem, of course - they're huge, and heavy. This is probably why they're being sold - GW just couldn't justify the cost of keeping them in storage. Just moving them anywhere is going to take some thought. I'm still a fan (commissioned a new norn picture just yesterday!) and I would love to have these - at least the garden one. Unfortunately, I'm on the other side of the Atlantic now, and I don't have anywhere to put them. My mum's house is in the UK but still a long way away and full of stuff - I'm not sure she'd appreciate large display cases. If nobody else bids, I'm quite prepared to buy them and pay any fees if there is a fan in the UK willing to arrange transportation (perhaps hiring a small van for a day?) and hang onto them with the care they deserve - at least until I or someone else has a better place to display them, if ever. Maybe a museum! These are part of our history, just like the blueprints - please don't let them be lost! I would very happily take the garden scene one off your hands, but sadly I have nowhere to keep them in this house.  If only I had an extra room...  Good luck finding them new homes, whoever buys them will be extremely lucky indeed! Especially the garden one, that one tugs at my sentimental heartstrings the most. |

In case it's unclear, I'm not the seller - last I heard these were in Gameware's storage. I imagine that's why they're being sold; they can't justify the expense anymore. I don't think it comes with carrots or lemons, but you could always add your own . . . If I had a mansion with a computer games room, this would totally line the back wall. D: Holy crap. I can't imagine anyone actually buying them, though, just because of the sheer size and the whole "local pick up only" thing. I am in the UK currently and heading back stateside in a couple of weeks (too soon if you ask me) but there'd be absolutely no way I could do it, for me or anyone else, sadly. XD |

How wonderful it would be to own a piece of Creatures history! But it is a little scary to see that the two original models are now out there for pretty much anyone to bid on... I really hope that they end up in good hands! If I had any ties in the UK, I would most certainly be trying to help the community get a hold of these. |

I too would be happy if these models ended up in the care of a CC member. It would be ideal if they stayed in the community where they belong. Good luck if you're going to bid on them, scorp! Maybe whoeover ends up buying them could take some decent photos too. I'd love to see the models more clearly, especially the garden scene. Also, does anybody know why the models were put in storage for long? Didn't the company want them on display? |

Limited space, I imagine. The Gameware offices looked to be significantly smaller than CL's. The other two probably also aren't as impressive as the house to those who haven't played the game. Umm . . . I'm not sure that's a good idea . . . Bear in mind that these are heavy display cases that require multiple people to lift. It's not something you can ship (unless you have enough money to make new ones). Has anyone seen the updated photos? It looks like they're currently outside against a fence... But maybe I'm looking at it incorrectly. I really hope that these two models end up in a collector's hands. I didn't even realize that these still existed, and they're a very important piece of Creatures history. What other game went through the development process as a gigantic clay model? How I wish they were nearby: The new pictures make them look even more stunning! |

I am bidding. I have been a fan of creatures since I first owned a computer so long ago that I can barely remember it, it is a massive part of my life and I cannot describe how much I would love to own one of these models. Of course, I'm sure nearly all of you can say the same thing but I have already bid on the garden scene. Just something to keep in mind. |
