Ok, Ive just gotten my paws on Creatures:The Albian Years from GOG (thanks to Laura. It seems that im constantly thanking her, of course with good reason, lol)
I started out playing C2, so it was great reliving that. The weird thing is though, I've been spoiled with endless scrolling and picking up norns etc in C3/DS, so the previous two feel restricted.
Having played a newer version of Creatures, what annoys you when going back? |

The colour depth is the limitation I tend to focus on in the earlier games, although the cuteness of the Norns keeps you going back to it

The earlier games are designed as more a game and less a simulation, you are very restricted in C1, and in C2 without gaining multiple powerups (and even then the restriction is still greater than in C3/DS). There is cheat mode, but autosave is disabled in this. Quite a hassle when you just want to develop or hold wolfling runs.
The biology of the C1 norns is much more simplistic than the other games, and the default norns have extremely long lives, perhaps since they were designed more as "pets". The default norns in C2 of course suffer from many faults, and the game needs a lot of patches/fixes to work perfectly. Breeding does not really come naturally to the default norns in either of these games, and grendels and ettins need a whole myriad of fixes to breed at all! Combined with the lack of any fast mode, and the fact that the older engine(s) seems much more unstable, wolfling runs are usually extremely difficult.
I think that just about covers it
Edit: Hey look, we both have C2 ettins in our avatar. |

I am going to be annoying and say that I don't favour C3/DS over C1 or C2. I mean, I don't hate C3/DS, but I tend to go back to C1 and C2 more, whilst C3/DS is often just left to gather dust.
I love and prefer the "hands on" approach that the applets in these earlier games encourage - the Science Kit, Breeder's Kit, Health Kit... I find that all of the challenges C1 and C2 present make for a much richer gaming experience. I think that's part of the charm and what keeps me coming back, and for me, personally, the game play wouldn't be the same without fighting with my Norns to get them to co-operate!
If I find that this experience does get a bit too rich - if the challenge ever becomes too frustrating, there's always a way to get round things, with certain COBs available. For example, in C2, the Game State Controller enables the activation of all power-ups and endless scrolling, (available in the Creatures 2 Object Pack 2 if you don't have The Albian Years) whilst the Pick-Me-Up COB means that I can pick up a tearaway Norn with ease. There's also the Puffer Fish COB, which prevents Norns from drowning, but I think that's babying them a bit too much.
In my case, it’s a matter adjusting to a newer and less restricting environment, not the other way around.

I agree with Laura!
I tried C3 and DS but without the applets it just didn't have that charm the previous games possesed. When I first got C2 its was actually the applets that got me interested. The biology (even in its simplicity) was cool. I always wondered how it all worked.
All in all I prefer the older games

hm, interesting.
i have to agree with you guys about the applets. i think one of the most common questions is, why did they keep in the universally hated powerups and eliminate the universally loved applets? arrr, cyberlife.
as far as the topic of this thread, the hardest thing to get used to is the lack of infinite scroll. i usually use cheats to enable it in c1 after a while, haha.
also in c1, the less complicated vocabulary is both a blessing and a curse. i find myself asking my norns to express sometimes

I really want to play these previous games, but I just have C3/DS. I hope I can buy them at some point, they sound really interesting.

I think it would be really cool for someone to take all the applets in C2 and transfer them to C3/DS. That may be tricky of course, but most of the fun in C2 involved the usage of the applets. The hoverdoc is kind of an applet, but it doesn't quite match the original applets. I did enjoy fiddling in the Neuroscience Kit an awful lot!

@christine: If you use the 'Super speech toy' cob you can teach your Norns the world 'think', which is a rough equivalent to 'express'. With their more limited vocabularly it's often hard to tell what they're asking for, but it's possible to decode it.
For example, a Norn saying their name and 'food' is the equivalent of "Em hungry", even though the super speech toy teaches them the word 'hungry'. Go figure.
Over the past year or so I've gone through all the Creatures games, working backwards. I found C3 Norns to be too unemotional and bred too fast to develope a connection with them. C2 is brilliant, but the poor Norns are so badly damaged that once they reach a certain age it feels cruel to keep them alive. They never eat or sleep and are constantly unhappy.
I'm presently playing C1 and loving it. There are some challenging restrictions like limited scroll, but the overall experience is better. |

Personally, my favorites would be a tie between DS and C1. C2 is OK, but I think the norns are horribly ugly (currently my C2 world has Nornverter norns in it) and I find the powerups annoying. They're less annoying in C3 because I can hold the norns' hands. Which gets me to my least favorite part of both C1 and C2 - that I have to tell the norns to follow me instead of dragging them around. Even the 'push hand' thing in C2 is tedious and often ineffective.
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |

I love C1! Still play it today. Unfortunatly, my original cd broke years ago, but thankfully I was able to find all the creatures games on the internet. I tried C2, but i find the creatures are more independant and hard to breed, but im still adjusting to it. C3 seems complicated, havent really tried it personally, and creatures village i gave up ten minutes after playing it. Too kiddy for me. |

I personally don't have too much problems adjusting to earlier versions of the game after playing C3/DS. Although sometimes I wish I could pick up or move norns in C1 easier, I almost enjoy that I cannot, as it forces the player to interact with their creatures through speech, which creates more of a connection between the use and creature (for me, anyways).
The speech in C1 is a bit limited, but I find the language in C3/DS to be ridiculously overdeveloped. I had always been under impression that norn were supposed to be considered to have an intelligence level similar to toddlers, but in C3 they use words like "intensely" and "extremely", yet still have difficulties pronouncing their own name. (What?) "Fred intensely hungry for starch". "Maybe Fred eat button". The language doesn't seem to suit their intelligence level... XD
Also, I twitch slightly every time a creature says he/she is hungry for starch, protein, or fat. Why do they know that? I don't even know what I'm hungry for, and I'm at least intelligent enough not to try and eat buttons and elevators.
Anyways, long rant short, I find the restrictions in C1 almost beneficial to a certain degree, as the scrolling and moving restrictions force the player to interact with his creatures. What I really really really miss though are the ecosystems in C3. I love all the plants and critters!
