All that talk about fanart in the CCSF 2009 Feedback Topic rekindled an old thought of mine... Why do I find it so difficult to draw a Norn?
I ask all you talented artists out there, how do you go about drawing a Norn/Ettin/Grendel/thing/or whatever? What's your drawing style? You must have a method. Are there steps or guidelines that you follow, or are you one of those who just begins doodling and goes with what materialises on the page?
Now me, I'm not claiming to have any talent or even a good ability for art, whether it be sketching or shading, (I'm no Monet, I'm not even a Jackson Pollock!) but I can draw a little, so there's hope for me yet. I'd love to be able to post a sketch or two in the gallery at some point, even if it's just a rough sketch that resembles a Norn shape.
If you have any, I love some tips or guidance, because I have time on my hands, and I would love to give this a go. Plus, it's not often we discuss something as sophisticated as Art around here so this topic could be a bit of fun too. Maybe you too are struggling and would like some artsy pointers.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions! |

I rather like reading Steve Grand's story about a norn's appearance, myself. It's hard to borrow techniques from drawing dogs or cats without making the norn look too much like a dog or cat, I think.

I could have sworn this topic came up before (maybe on A2K?), because I drew this in response to it. Take it for what it's worth (which... isn't that much xP ).
As for drawing style, I'm far too heavily influenced by Matt Groening for my own good. Even when I was drawing my CCSF art I kept getting flustered because the basic sketches looked more like cartooney humans to me than small furry creatures. =P
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

Your tutorial makes it look so easy, Officer. I can really see how you're influenced by Matt Groening, the Norn's face, his eyes and mouth in particular, kinda reminds me of how Bart looks when he's scowling at something. It makes for very cute Norns though, even when they look angry!
Thanks for that article Malkin, I can see how Grand's description of a Norn's appearance, can prove really useful in developing one's own style.
