Are norns concious of themselves and each other in the same way that we are or are they just another virtual pet?
What do you think?
Basically are they just another piece of computer code or are they actually "ALIVE" as cyberlife told us.

Define life.
Reproduces. check
Makes waste. no
Made out of cells. no
eats. check
reacts to enviroment. check
i cant think of others, but you get the idea.
but is conciousness always life?
im going off on a tangent,

This person believes not (although it's confusing as to whether she's talking about C1 only, despite writing her paper in 2003). Boden reckons that the simulation isn't convincing enough to be called 'life' - norns can't get sunburns or visibly pack on muscle.
Also, C3 norns make waste. You just can't see it. Try turning off Toilet Control to see for yourself.

sorry, that. . Wasn't a tangent. Not close.
Personally, you have to define "concious" And it deponds on ones beliefs. I don't think so, because like any other program, it only responds like stimuli to certain commands, such as pushing, pulling, "eating," and so forth. If you told it "norn, please, I hate you and you should run cliffedge" or "hand dislike norn, maybe norn hit self" - It wouldn't get it, because it is not a part of the code for it to actually understand that. .
Hmm, maybe I'm just not as big of a Creatures fan as the youngins.

Norns do not seem 'concious' because, as Karias said, they only really respond to certain commands. But they do interact with others and things around them (sometimes even themselves ). So it seems like that yes, they are JUST a program, but a pretty good one at that . |

Well, only if you count virtual conciousness. they know what their surrondings are,but thats it.

Virtual conciousness... Never thought of that. Aware of their surroundings, yes. Also trying to eat elevator, door and the clearly unreachable bramboo berry when there's at least 3 that are reachable to them XD. |
