I loved Menolly, Lessa and Moreta - girls with pluck. Haven't read any of them past Dragondrums, really - I gather they're much more sci fi now than fantasy?
I used to be a fan of the series. Somebody put one of the books in the children's section of my local library one time [I ASSUME by mistake], and I discovered it there.
I read a couple other books, but after getting a taste of what the series in general was going to be--rampant sex and general nastiness of most characters in the series--I gave up.
Still, I really liked some of that woman's ideas, like telepathic dragons, fire lizards, thread. And they're what gave me the idea to start writing my own. I haven't quite gotten to it yet, but if I do, Pern will have been my inspiration.
Yeah, I think the rampant sex was one of the reasons why I liked Pern as a kid.. No wonder why there was such a focus on the golden dragons' riders... IIRC, all the rest were male. x_x "Rose surrounded by thorns" or what? I also thought the rules for who could ride what colour dragon were dumb. XD
I've heard that they're better, but it was from someone who thought the originals were fine anyways. So I didn't completely trust that their definition of "better" coincides with mine. Who knows what they could have meant.
*Just read one of Malkin's previous posts*
Rampant sex?!?!?!?!
In the books?
So, I guess, in a spoof, they could be called, oh, forgot, that's in horrible taste!
I just found my 2 pern books!
The white dragon
AND
The Harper Hall Of Pern
Oh, and, anyone read the 'Dragon's Blood' series?
I've read the 1rst book, SO GOOD!
