Bad news? It's still scheduled for 2012. I consider that good news. Plus it sounds like it might be coming out for Christmas, like some suggested.

Yeah, darn those hard-working people who'd rather delay the game instead of rushing it and delivering a broken product!

Other developers are way better at getting their game out on the correct date! Skyrim was released at the 11th of November on the clock, beat that! And the game stopped being broken after only about 5 patches! Caring about release date is way more important than caring about quality.

Jsd0108, you keep bemoaning FC as though your expectations are something they should be trying to live up to. Would it be possible for you to spare us your condescension? I'm fine with the fact that you feel pessimistic about the situation, but you seem to have come into this with the assumption that the delays give you the right to act like a snob. You aren't getting any less out of the present situation than the rest of us, so please try to spare us the attitude. I understand it isn't directed at us, but I don't see why we need to see it, either.

So far Fishing Cactus has yet to give us any indication that C4 will be as disastrous as what we've already gotten from Creatures Labs, namely Creatures 2--which was buggy, crashed frequently, and had OHSS which prevented the original genome from doing much of anything except wallbonking and starving to death. But you don't see me labeling Creatures Labs with terms like "incompetent" because of it. I don't think we need to stoop to that lack of civility here.

I never lectured you on anything, nor did I attack you. I honestly don't care if you think I'm being hypocritical. I don't care if you disagree with people being optimistic, either. I do care, however, that your means of expressing your pessimistim are far more caustic than is necessary or polite. I'm not the only person bothered by seeing you say FC is incompetent, that they have "no excuse" for not telling us everything, or that they "need to learn a little something about marketing". How much do you actually know about marketing, or game design? Are you a programmer? What basis do you have to justify these caustic remarks? Some of your comments seem very presumptuous.

A release date is not a promise, and the comparison is grossly inaccurate. A release date is only an estimation. I know they did not give us a disclaimer stating as much, but honestly it is pretty much a given that a release date is not set in stone. Any programmer can tell you this. All gaming companies must put forward release dates at some point, regardless of whether they know they can meet them or not. They cannot "stop saying" when they think a game will be released, regardless of whether it bothers some fans, because the gaming industry requires release dates. They must say something, even if it is only their best guess, even if they know there's a good chance it will be wrong.

I don't know why my asking for a little courtesy would flabbergast anyone because honestly from my perspective I'm not asking for much. If someone told me I was being too caustic I would take it into consideration, not interpret it as a personal attack. Maybe that's just me, though.

Fishing Cactus has explained that for them, the magnitude of the project has expanded several times as they've gotten into the project, as they've realised our expectations for C4 and as they've delved into the complexity of the Creatures technology.

Given this, I think that it is quite understandable that the release date has been pushed back at least once, especially given the nature of free-to-play games needing to be good from the start or else they lose players. It is disappointing, and it is unfortunate that it ended up being 6 months, and will be another 6 months or so longer, but that's what they've decided to do, and hopefully we'll get a better C4 out of the wait - looking at the silver lining. :) After all, it has been 11 years since Docking Station was released - it's somehow agonising to wait another six months, but keeping the long term in mind helps.

Fishing Cactus has acknowledged that it was a mistake to let the community go on believing things were on track until this point, and they have asked us to remind them when they are screwing up the level of communication. I've had good success with posting questions on their blog - even if it takes them a little while to get around to it, they've still answered most of my questions. You could try sending them an email, or posting on their facebook page, or tweeting them. It is to some extent normal that Fishing Cactus don't want to show their whole hand before the game is released, but asking them doesn't hurt.

As it is, they've given us a new estimated date - and it is only an estimate, not a promise or a case of them "breaking their word" - and some more information about the gameplay. Not as much as what we were hoping for, but given the circumstances, not bad either.

I think you guys handled it well.

People tend underestimate how long these project should take because they've never tried programing. Which is a bit distressing, since a quick peek over at the development board would show them how long some simple problems can take to solve.

Just doing a website revamp is absolutely killing me, so I can't even begin to imagine how frustrating and difficult it would be to create an entire game that works on multiple platforms.

I'm sad that I can't play Creatures 4 all summer during my break from studying, but life goes on.

Skyrim was HUGE though. So they were probably fed up with all the deadlines.
