It seems that the devs may be working on a crawling animation!

Finally, we experimented with crawling animations for the babies and they look really cute, unfortunately the issue lies with the involuntary animations (sneeze, cough, suffocate etc.) which are played in a stand-up position. We didn't think about that and felt pretty stupid seeing the baby crawl and suddenly stand up to sneeze and crawl again [nsurprised]
If we have more time to dedicate to the creation a baby-specific set of animations I'd love to include it...or maybe limit involuntary actions on babies in a certain way but I don't like that idea that much.

Well that made me laugh! I guess the crawling will be cute. But sigh I'm just still stuck on how un-nornish they seem in terms of the way they act, their expressions etc C4 norns somehow look more..mature? And less playful and child like. Ill miss the tails too! And the cat breeds lol.

And some new information about the eyes!

You may have seen a picture of a norn with different coloured eyes recently on the C4 Instagram page.

"About the eye color, some Norns will have different colored eyes. It’s a a genetic trait of certain Norn breeds and can be passed on to offspring. The same goes for fur color, patterns, pattern colors etc.

The system we put in place (and which we plan to explain in a further update, with design and technical details) has some limitations regarding the eyes: the colors themselves won’t change (ie. 1 red and 1 yellow eye will always keep those colors during breeding.), meaning that the newborn will either get the father’s or mother’s eye set, but not a merge of the two."

(So a blue-eyed norn and a yellow-eyed norn will have blue or yellow-eyed children, not green-eyed children.)

Being able to design our own breeds with ease will truly be a blast! :)
I hope I'll be able to make breeds closely resembling 3d renditions of c1/c2 norns!

My favorites were always the c1 fox norns, I'd love to be able to raise some 3d ones in this new environment! ^^

I'm a little surprised that FC have decided to make the lifespan of the norns only 3 or 4 hours - typically we've bonded more strongly with the longer-lived norns of C1.

I agree that 3-4 hours doesn't seem very long at all (and I love my adorable oldies in C1!) but didn't Fishing Cactus also mention testing and feedback in regards to lifespan? This sounds promising:

C4DEV_Sam: 9.1 The current lifespan of a Norn is 3/4 hours, but again, as for the pregnancy we will lock it during testing, and you'll have occasion to give us more feedback in opening testing phase!

C4DEV_Sam: We take good note of it guys! Again, you'll get your say in it when testing the game.

Hopefully they take some of the great suggestions to heart! 3-4 seems extremely short... I typically take around an hour to really get to know a Norn/Grendel, and I'm heartbroken by the time they pass away at 8-12 hours. I think a good medium would be something like a lifespan of 6-8 hours. Still on the low side from my perspective, but at least it gives a better chance of bonding with a C4 Norn. We'll see what comes from future updates!

I would love their lifespans to be longer. 3 hours isn't enough time to bond with them.

Will probably design and breed my norns to be as long-furred as possible. Won't interfere with the appearances of the offspring much, though, as I'd like to be surprised!

I'm not sure if anyone else agrees with me on this but I really miss how the norns on the previous games had hair (most anyways). From the looks of it, C4 norns can't grow hair. I'm hoping that Fishing Cactus will make a hair add on some day.

Well they have hair, it's just not very long.

I think they probably removed the hair because, for 3D animation, hair is pretty resource intensive to animate so it looks good.

I like the real-time fur they've added to the Norns. I only hope that it either isn't too resource-intensive or can be disabled, as the computer I'm using at the moment isn't all that powerful. [nsad]

When the hair is short like that it's not too bad from my experience.

Long, floppy hair on the other hand....

I like striking contrast between black and bright neon colors, so I think I'll probably create a dark grey or black norn with bright eyes - probably green or orange - and cover the rest of him with little white spots. :P
I also would like to make a norn look like a chocolate chip cookie. A light brown, biscuity base with little dark brown chocolate chip markings and dreamy chocolate brown eyes. XD

Ooh, yes indeed I do! Most likely I'd go for a stark white Norn with bright green and blue markings, and very bright eyes. Possibly yellow eyes. The other would be a peanut buttery color with darker speckles and soft blue eyes, as an attempt to recreate my beloved Mouse Norns. :)

My one concern about customizing Norns is what's currently posted in the FAQ:

How far can I personalise my Norns?

Using the Golden Eggs, you will be able to personalise new Norns that do not come from two parents. So you will be able to choose their height, body size, and also the shape of their ears, their fur or the colour of their eyes... You have a choice of designs and an infinite choice of colours to give them the look you want, with longer or shorter hair, for example.

I know a lot of the information on the site is from a long time ago, but I would be really disappointed if the only way to truly customize a Norn's appearance is through the rare, real money currency. Currently, we can just go into one of the Genetics Kits and change the appearance gene slots and/or pigments.

Everyone has such great ideas for creating unique Norns, so I really hope that this customization feature will be available for free!

does anyone actually like that second Norn breed shown in the preview video on Youtube? I think it either looks like a fat, tailless cat or a demented Teletubby !.

wow, here I was coming to make a thread about how the norns looks like Teletubbies and here you are pointing out the exact same thing!

What were they thinking? The designs in the past games where a lot more .. sophisticated? realistic? charming? these look just as you say, a demented Teletubby

I don't even know a great deal about the game the looks of the norns really turned me off!

Heh, you know, that kind of reminds me of what the new Littlest Pet Shop toys look like compared to what they looked like in the early 90s when I was a child.

Apparently giving everything ridiculously huge heads is the only way to make them cute.

I still have a fairly large collection of 90s Littlest Pet Shop! Packed them all away carefully a couple of months ago. Some are in pretty bad shape, but I loved playing with those. When I saw the change... I just about fell out of my chair! No idea why the change was necessary. Now I wonder if children even know what pets are supposed to look like!

I just hope the Creatures Online Norns have some endearing qualities. I would have been happy with C1 Norns running around in 3D with little change to their appearances. At least then we would have something familiar! But I'll give it a shot, whenever it gets released.

My collection is somewhere in my parents' attic... Perhaps I will go hunting for them sometime soon, as I'm expecting my first child at the moment. :) *completely off-topic time over, but would love to discuss adorable toys elsewhere*

oh my gosh those things! i actually had a few of those, i don't get the appeal of the new ones at all, their heads are so big and blockish it has the opposite effect instead of being cute they are downright CREEPY

and are you gonna teach your little one to play creatures? it was one of my first games i was like 3 years old when i first started haha [nlaugh] [nlaugh]

Exactly! Or the C3/DS norns, because if im not mistaken their sprites where made using a 3D model

Same here. The unfortunate downfall of a free to play model is usually customization and cosmetic features are behind a pay wall.

We'll see how it turns out and if they do show the old community any respect/fan service, however I have a feeling that it's just going to be aimed at the new generation who are used to these sorts of barriers.

Heck, I'm more than happy to fork out money for a boxed or even collector's edition to give us access to the toolsets we are used to built in as features!

As a side note, have they mentioned anything about modding/user creations?

I know that the official position has been that third party development will not be supported, at least to start with. I somehow doubt that third party customization will ever be allowed with the F2P model this is based on... But we'll see.

Is it odd that this has inspired me to create even more for the older games? Definitely feel like some people feel the same way, which isn't a bad thing! I just hope that Creatures Online turns out to be halfway decent so that people can really give Creatures a chance.

whaaaaaaat!!

that would pretty much kill the game if they didn't allow modding, its the reason i can't play MMOs anymore: there's almost no moddability or customization

i understand that it would help bring new players to the series, but without some form of third party development it won't last very long

of course, i could be wrong, lots of people still play farmville, or flower shop or whatever those cheesy facebook games are called, none of which let you mod them :( i'd rather play CO than those games

they did say they wanted us to be able to mod but its fining a way for us to do that which is what you are trying to work out. it might not be straight away since they are just working on getting it to the release but i think they'll make it possible

I wonder how long their life span will be? If it's too long then people will get bored with the game, but if its not long enough you can't really form an attachment to them. I'd also like to see pregnancies last for a good while (like a mammal), or the eggs taking a long time to hatch without the incubator (like a bird).

That reminds me, how much do you guys think they'll be like mammals, mammal-like reptiles, or birds?

Though when you mentioned that I remembered platypus's who have fur and lay eggs. Maybe Norns are a bit like that.

Norns do not lactate*- Platypi do. They just... secrete it onto patches of skin, instead of having nipples.

Hmm, I think it would be very interesting, being able to actually make my own 3d models and replace them, but that's not an easy thing to make available for a full 3d game..

The fur, well, I think I'd make them crazy colored, using purples and blues as a base. I also really like the combination indigo-teal, or dark marine blue with glowy teal...looks very alien. Example

The C4 norns are pretty cute, aside from the oversized heads. I think if I made one I'd probably model it after C1 Horse or White Haired Pixie norns. If I did a Horse Norn, though, I think I'd make the skin a little lighter. I think the cookie or chocolate patterned norns sound really cute too, though, and a cat norn could be very fun.

I like the concept of more realistic norns, and the fur looks pretty good!
Some of them look really weird, though...
I think I'll make my norns red with teal markings and vice versa. Red and teal look good together...

I'll also probably end up making norns to look like all the Homestuck trolls as well. xP
