GOG.com ('Good Old Games') now has electronic versions of the Remastered Creatures series - The Albian Years, Exodus and Village, available to buy and download for $9.99 each.

When you purchase, the manuals are also available for free in .PDF format.

What's really caught my attention though, is that they state that these downloads are "Compatible with Windows XP & Windows Vista (32 & 64 bit)" ??? :o

This comes as an intriguing prospect to someone who is missing C2 as much as I am. I am wondering if the version from GOG.com would work, though I suppose we won't know this until somebody with Vista actually tries it. GOG.com will definitely be receiving my well-earnt money for The Albian Years if it does.

hmmm no clue if that realy can be possible O.o *well might be,but then again,i wonder XD *

but I dosn't trust easily sites that have the buy and then download future XD
I prefer when seeing what I buying XD But hey thats just me :3

Will be interessting to hear if anyone here has been able buying from this site and if it works, specialy on vista ^^
*didn't meant my words as anything offensive, realy I just meant I myself avoid that kind of buying *except way back on clabs,
when you had to do this with the clabs breeds *

It appears on the GOG.com site, that they have a team of programmers that fix games to specifically run on Windows XP and Vista. Not only that but Creatures 2 does seem to have a functional screenshot of it working on a Vista Machine

[They have, for example, made it so Duke Nukem 3D can run on a 32/64 bit Vista machine with no trouble, I'm sure Creatures was a walk in the park]

I am going to actually ask my parents if I can pay them to download this for me. I promice, if I can get it, to report in full detail how it works. If I can. But remember : Every machine is different in some way, so there is no gauruntee.

But the real question for me is : Sure, if it works on Vista, but will the ADDONS work?

Look at the C2 screenshots! It is the Aero user interface of Win. Vista!
And the site looks reliable.
If I were you I would try.

P.S. Yeah, The most important point is the expansion of the game.

Cooly aru :3
that might solve your'e c2 prob ^^

but i kinda hope that the c2 for vista prob will exist in any other form for us having the creature triple pack and *pray* that it will work on vista at some point without virtual machines ;__;

I just dons't feel like asking about to get this and then probely not be able to run on my good for nothing vista *it is realy picky >_<*
as i did only get the triple pack just for that reason..vista -_-
and well it was kinda good to get it,ingoring the many busg each game has, still it's something..but won't work on vista,xp yes,but vista >_>

but if there's people enough backing up this and that it is a great solution to the ones woning c2 but can't run it on theyre vista..
then maybe...

i say good luck to you and i will be happy to hear more about it :3

:D That's fantastic news, Azumizai! Is it still buggy in that charming way that C2 was, or am I expecting miracles? ;)

I honestly haven't played C2 that much before. SO this is also the first time of me really playing it.

I am trying to get the genetics kit towork. C2 has been put in a different folder. Soo... Trying to get the genetics kit to point there. But otherwise... it's... pretty nice. o_o

Oh wow, wow, WOW... Thanks for letting us know Azumizai! Is it too early for me to get ridiculously excited? :D Have you had any luck injecting any COBs yet? (Sorry to treat you like a guinea pig). ;)

Yes I know what your thinking about giving it 5 stars and a very short and non-existant review and thats fine and all but NO! Write a good detailed review for it if your going to review it, and dont forget to possibly mention one or two important creatures sites. Like this one.

I've just finished my review of Exodus ('An acquired taste, but for the intended audience there is no finer dining'), it's pretty long so don't feel like you have to read it if you don't want to (as you all probably know quite a bit of it). I gave Exodus a 4 out of 5 due to the various 'bugs' in the game (horrible ecosystems that quickly self-destruct being one major negative) as well as the somewhat awkward online functions, but mentioned that with the right 3rd party downloads it could easily be a 5 out of 5.

I also mentioned Creaturetopia and Creaturescaves as forums worth checking out, and that pretty much anything made by Vampess is essential :)

Oh, and I included a quite bit of advice to anybody not sure if Exodus is for them telling them that Docking Station on it's own was free, something that I hope encourages people to give Creatures a shot even if they decide not to buy Exodus in the end.

If you have the time, please rate the Creatures games and write up a comprehensive and informative review. Such things would be very helpful to people who have never bought the game before and helpful to us as a way of promoting our community.

So far, I can inject any of the COBs that come with the game. I have the Kai, Scorpio and Mernorns in the game. I have the canny norns too.

I can't use the Genetics kit because it just doesn't point to the right directory... BUT that shoudl be easily enough fixed by someone who can patch it.

So yeah. Working pretty great as-so-far. :3

I guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow then - having an emotional reunion with C2! Thanks ever so for the feedback Azumizai. :) I really am too excited over this. :P

I think the idea of writing some reviews is a good one. I mean, the Creatures series isn't what I'd refer to as mainstream, so people on GOG are bound to want to read reviews on the games if they've never come across them before, or don't know much about them. It can be down to tell them more, as much about Creatures and as much about the CC as we can - then some may follow. I imagine those new to Creatures might appreciate the collective support and knowledge of the CC, I know I did.

I am completely head over heels in love with GOG.com and I want to have its babies - I've just downloaded The Albian Years myself and so far C2 runs like a dream! :D

Yippee!

I found myself getting a little choked up when it loaded no problem and I heard the ambient background music again, because I've missed it so much... :$

Azumizai, did you still have to install the Remastered patch to get the add-ons to work?

@Laura

It DOES run like a dream, doesn't it? I'm actually only having trouble with the C1 Medical Kit for some reason. It's a little baffling why that keeps telling me that it can't open. >__>; But that's the only issue I HAVE. So I can't complain.

I have gotten the Genetics Kit to work WITH the remastered patch, so if you want that you have to get the remastered patch. As so far, I don't know many C2 Cobs that people like to play the game with, so I can't test any because I just plain don't know. XD

So have fun with this game! I pray and hope that this'll kickup the community a little. S'like a tiny re-release.

Agentrok and Ghosthande, I hope you guys are able to get it soon! :)

I am finding that C1 is behaving a bit bizarrely though... I loaded it for the first time since downloading it just now, went to the Hatchery, and instead of 6 eggs, there was only 4. Odd, I thought, so I proceeded to hatch all 4 in order to use the Emergency Kit/Backup to replenish my eggs. I went to click "More Eggs!" and was told "Only use this button when you have completely run out of eggs!" I load C1 again, and sure enough there are 6 eggs sitting in the Hatchery - except now I have 4 Norns which I don't really want, so back to the Emergency Kit I go, I click "New World" and I'm told I'll lose all my Norns. I click "OK" and load C1 again... The 4 Norns I hatched are still there! I ended up exporting them and deleting the EXP files to get rid of them.

Curiouser and curiouser... :o

And yeah, the Health Kit is a no-goer for me too, I just get told that "No error message is available". But that's no biggie, if I recall correctly all you really need it for is injecting Tomatoes, Feverfew and Cheese?

Weird. Could the thing with the Norns be due to Vista's security issues? As I recall that's consistently a problem even with games made for Vista.

It likes to hide save files and such in special areas, and depending on how you start the game when you play, it doesn't always find them again afterward, or refuses to acknowledge that they exist--so you may come back and find your game has traveled "back in time" and you've lost progress, you have things you shouldn't have anymore or things you should have aren't there, and so on. In most cases, you have to run a game in administrator mode to really make sure it's saving everything where it should be.

Well running both C1 and the Emergency Kit in Administrator mode didn't make the 'New World' function work (hatched another Norn, went to have new world and the Norn was still there) but it DID get the Health Kit working! :)

O_O

I thought I was hallucinating at first when I saw this.

I hope there's a way I can keep the GW version of Albian Years on my comp...I just want to run C2. C1 works fine, I don't really need that.

I don't have Vista anymore, but Windows 7...uh, I...gotta go.

Ah, thanks for the solution for the Medical Kit. I remember that playing Creatures 1... my favorite thing was to monitor the creatures through the Kits. Call me crazy. ^__^;

And I'm sure that you can just copy Eden.sfc and then rename and replace it with World.sfc if you really DO want a blank and clean world. (And of course use the emergency kit to replace the eggs).

But it's been so long since I played the game. Am I wrong?

I just went and bought this, and am currently playing C2 like a maniac. Albeit, you have to jump through hoops a little bit: run it in Compatibility Mode for Windows 98, and as an Administrator(I have Windows 7 Professional...I had Vista until Win7 came out). For some reason, I was unable to run world.sfc without getting an error..something about 'the other program is busy.' What?

But, I made a second world, and that one works. For the first time, I have a C2 icon sitting between that of C1 and C3 on my desktop. The line is at long last complete.

However, for whatever reason, the program takes forever and a day to boot up, and I have no idea why. I don't use GOG's C1, because Gameware's C1 works just fine. So, I have two versions of the Albian Years on my computer. :P I wanted to try the Blueberry Cheat, but the registry key is nowhere to be found. That's odd to me, because I was able to work out how to make the Doctor Cheat for C1 work for Albian Years(Gameware's version). Meh. IMHO, those shouldn't even be 'cheat' modes, just standard gameplay. Dang you, Cyberlife. :P I just wanna be able to pick up my creatures.

I forgot how incredibly beautiful C2 Albia is. <3 *Pokes desert norns* No, Alexandra, don't eat the computer...

Congratulations Starbucks! Viva La C2! :D

I made a discovery about the GOG C1 hatchery - when you run out of eggs they replenish themselves automatically, so you don't need to use the Emergency Kit for that. :) Maybe the kits/stocks replenish themselves too.

Right now the GOG.com site appears to be working.
I'm very glad they put the games on their site, I heard a lot of good things about GOG.

It almost makes me wish my C2 wouldn't work perfectly on Vista so I could buy it again and be all nostalgic.
I guess I'm lucky to have a working C2, so oh well. :)

I kinda had the same problem. I had trouble loading the homepage and had to keep hitting 'Refresh' in order for it to come up. Then I had the same trouble with the 'My Account' page, which would not load at all. Turns out it must've been an issue with the strength of my connection (I was just using my wireless internet stick) for I switched to my Dad's wireless connection briefly, and it was fine after that, I was able to access my account and purchase no problem.

Now, if only they'd make 'Little Big Adventure 2' or the 'Monkey Island' series available on there...

I just installed Creatures the Albian Years. :D Now I can finally play on my Vista!

edit: When I tired to download Creatures 1 cob injector it gave me an error. :( Failed to copy.Alima.bmp to Ibackup\Hatchery\Tempbu\Alima.bmp then it says Failed to copy injector.exe to IBackup\Hatchery'Tempbu\Injector.exe.

That is what the error said.

edit gain...: it still installed though. I wonder if it works...
