| Rolis was born in a deep, dark cave, hence her dark colour. As soon as she left her egg, Rolis felt a great urge for water. It dripped from the roof of the cave, and she licked a little into her dry mouth. She was hungry too, and lonely. Rolis looked about and made straight for the exit of the cave.
Outside the light blinded her for a moment, and she covered her eyes. "Ung hurt!" She cried.
Beside her a voice said "What's wrong?"
Gingerly, Rolis uncovered her eyes and saw a large, red nornchi with blue eyes standing beside her.
"The name's Blue." Said the nornchi. "Er . . . Rolis." Said Rolis.
"Are you hungry?" Asked Blue.
"Yes!" Said Rolis. Blue pulled an apple out of a bag on his back with a flourish. "Here. Have an apple."
Rolis bit into the apple with delight, and soon wolfed it down. Maybe it wasn't so bad out here, after all.
Blue took Rolis to the creatchi village, where grendel, ettin and nornchis lived together in harmony. Rolis lived with Blue in his house, but she longed for the company of other grendelchis. However none of them in the village showed her the kind of friendship she wanted.
One bright day, Rolis went out for a walk in the countryside, and she came upon a little pool, with willow trees growing round it. Suddenly she felt the great craving for water she had experienced at birth, and she dived in. It was beautiful under the water, weeds moved in slow, wavy patterns and fish swam slowly through the water. Suddenly Rolis saw before her a shape like to her own. It was . . . A grendelchi!
He swam sinuously towards her, and in that moment Rolis fell in love with him. Together she and the grendelchi swam through the water, scattering the fish. They swam until they could swim no more, and then crawled out and lay exhausted on the bank. "What's your name?" Asked Rolis.
"Bargoyle. I'm an aqua-grendelchi." He replied. Rolis Is thinking about trigonometry |
