On 'My Documents' and Windows 10

So, back in the day, everyone was advised to use My Documents as the install destination. I forget exactly why, but not doing this could cause various problems.

I'm using Windows 10. My Documents is not a thing anymore. There's a 'Documents' folder, but it's located under OneDrive. The file pathway is, in short, totally different.

So should one still install to Documents? Is there any benefit to doing so? Or is there a different way to achieve proper extraction and et cetera when running the GOG version of DS on Windows 10?

First of all, I'm pretty sure you can turn off the onedrive function somehow.
t's hard to say how a game would behave if you installed it to a cloud. It might be worth trying for experimental sake, but I wouldn't try it with a game I intend to play properly.

Other than that, the main reason people put it into My Documents was because of folder clashes. When you install the games to the program files folder, agents wouldn't work right because files which are unpacked upon injection wouldn't be placed there. Windows would instead create a second C3/DS folder, typically in my documents or my games, where it drops off the files as if they were savegames not meant to merge with the main game files.
The engine never being made with such a split in mind would then get confused and not find the files in question.

To avoid the split from happening, people instead installed to a location outside of program files, as to prevent windows' paranoia from triggering. My documents just so happened to be a convenient location.
Long story short, any old folder among your local user files should do fine.

It's not literally going to a cloud (thank goodness - no doubt that would produce some deeply weird behavior in the program). It's just the filepath on my system for the Documents folder. It'd still be installing on the local drive.

In that case, though, Documents should work perfectly fine. Thanks!

I have to say this surprised me. I'm currently writing this post on a computer running Windows 10, and there is a 'Documents' folder listed under 'This PC'. In fact, I'd personally never even touched the 'OneDrive' part until just now to see if that really did have its own 'Documents' folder (it does, and it seems to be unique from from the one in 'This PC').

I cannot vouch for your setup, though, and it sounds like you've managed to sort it out, anyway. I was just intrigued that you only seem to have the one 'Documents' folder. [nsmile]

I know, it's weird. That's the filepath for the one linked under This PC. I can't find another one. Maybe it's just late-night brain, but I checked a few times.

Although, Galaxy still managed to make a dog's breakfast of the whole thing. Even though I clearly chose Documents as the target folder it's still looking for files in Program Files when I try to run the program. Grah!

I'm downloading the offline installer so I can try to do this without having to involve Galaxy. With any luck that'll fix it.

This is a pretty cheap and clunky laptop. Every time I turn around, I feel like, I'm discovering some weird quirk.

EDIT: So, it was indeed late-night brain. I found the other Documents folder buried in my user folder. (The OneDrive one is also local, mind, so it shouldn't make -that- big a difference.)

Alas, it did not help. Even after running the remaster patch, it tries to look for essential folders (like Sounds, etc.) in Program Files x86 (i.e. in the GoG folder). And crashes.

So now I'm stuck with a situation where it either won't run at all, or it will run but with serious catalogue/dependency issues that make some of my favorite agents autokill or fail to function at all (like Advanced Protective Tub and Magic Words Core ;.; )

I mean, the latter is obviously better than no game at all, but... GRAH. *chews on the program* I will fix you dammit I swear I will

... *becomes frustrated* *checks hard drive space* *double-installs to both Docs and the default filepath* >(

Where you installed it should look like this:

C:⧵Users⧵[username]⧵Documents⧵Creatures⧵Docking Station

In your Docking Station folder, there should be a "machine.cfg" file. This file tells the game where to find the directories of sounds, images etc.

Find the directories that aren't working. Example:
"Sounds Directory" Sounds

And replace:
"Sounds Directory" "c:⧵⧵users⧵⧵[username]⧵⧵documents⧵⧵creatures⧵⧵Docking Station⧵⧵Sounds"

Note: don't copy and paste the file addresses here to your machine.cfg file because it won't work because the backslash I used here is not a true backslash unicode-wise.

!!!

OMFG I love you forever and ever and ever amen. Thank you so much! I'm not very codebrain-y. I can figure things out once I have a starting point (that's how I can do brainedits - I learned enough from GM to be able to BS my way around the brainfile a little bit) but I had no idea where to even start with this one except re-installing and shuffling files around.
