How do I make Norn Breeds? | |

I don't want to sound like a n00b or anything, but how would one make a Third Pary C3/DS breed? I was planning on making a Norn breed that...
-Can get hot easily
-Doesn't need too much food
-Are amphibious, but prefer land
-Lives longer than other Norns
-Can die if exposed to heat too long
-Don't get angry or bored easily
-Look as though they're made of ice
...I only need to know how to make the breed, and I'll be all set. Can any of you users with prior experience in these matters give me instructions on how to make my own breed? Or post a link to help me find instructions?
If you can, please help! I've never made Norn breeds before, and I always wanted a new Norn of my custom design hanging around Ostrova.

I'm assuming you mean just a genetic breed. It's really hard... and no, I'm not being difficult. You'll need to get a genetics program, either the official one, or a third party one, like this one. There are a number of tutorials available, but I've never really gotten into them- most of it is experimenting around and seeing what works.
Creatures genetics are quite intertwined, so it'll take a while to make sure you've got everything covered- you can't just delete and add stuff in without taking into account the things that might rely on the genes you're messing with... and then the genes that rely on the genes that rely on what you're messing with.... |

Everything you need is available at the Creatures Development Network - you just need to search for what you want. Also, for more specialised help, you could ask over at Gameware's Creatures Developer Discussions Forum, if you get stuck or have any queries.
I wish you luck with your endeavours. I know you'll need a lot of patience and skill, that's for sure! Bearing that in mind, you might want familiarise yourself with basic genetics, and try something easier first, if this is your first stab at Creatures development. What you plan to create seems way too complicated for a beginner.
Let us know how you get on. It's better to try your hand at something, than not bother to try at all. I should practice what I preach really, I haven't even tried to make an agent, let alone a breed, in the 4 years I've been in the community. |

making a norn breed is a total pain in the butt, and that's just from the genetics standpoint. i love to tinker with norn genetics, but spriting is beyond me. there's something else to consider, too- body data. i'm not too familiar with how this works in ds, but in c2 basically the body data is strings of coordinates- and very tedious and frustrating. that's why many breed projects have three people working on them: a spriter, a body data coder, and a geneticist. one person trying to do all this usually gets frustrated and gives up, especially someone new to it.
if you're really interested in doing it, the cdn is a good place to start (thanks laura). also, just check out the creatures sprites, body data files, and genetics to get a handle on how existing breeds work, that should help a bit.
i personally love tinkering with creatures genetics. i don't think i actually learned anywhere- the best way is just to change something like how the creatures' metabolism, instincts, drives, something like that works and try to get results. it comes with a lot of trial and error.

If I were you I would get the Genetics kit and start on the pigmentation, so even if you mess up your creatures wont die...

The sprites take a loooong time to do. |

I was thinking of basing it off of the "Civet" or "Bruin" genome. Does that take shorter time than making the sprites yourself?
Experimenting with pigmentation is always the first wayt to go. You're quite right, puresowns.

I am an experianced geneticist, and I know for a fact that basing one of your genomes on another genome takes a lot less time and is a load easier than trying to make it from scratch.
As for the sprites: Draconorn is right. Making sprites takes really long.
In fact, that description wouldn't be too hard for me to do genetics-wise.
But this is your breed, so unless you want me to help you, I'm not gonna force anything.

Hawksight, with genetic breeds you don't need to make whole new sprites. But if you want to make something new and different then you do. Otherwise it would be a waste of a slot. |
