Hello!
I saw that Creatures games are available on Steam, and I thought about buying them. I don't know much about the series except that it is about cute creatures and has some educational values. Will it be suitable for my 10 years old son? He is a smart dude so I am not worried about his abilities, just wanted to make sure the content is good enough for his age. Thanks! |

First of all, they are on steam? Really? Do you have a link perhaps?
Secondly, if those games you talk about are in fact the same as the ones our forum is about, I'd absolutely say they are suitable for a 10 year old. The content scales with the interest of your kid basically.
The games can be viewed and played as just this cutesy little pet thing and there's nothing wrong with it.
Once you take a closer look at each norn, you can go a little deeper and start experimenting with reward and punishment, or selective breeding. Two reddish creatures are more likely to have red-colored offspring. Two long-lived creatures will probably have long-lived children.
When this still isn't enough for you, you can go into their genetics and manually tweak things. There are tools you can download to make custom edits to your creatures. This doesn't just involve basic stuff such as their looks, like some other games do. You can change their entire biochemistry (oh btw, they have a working biochemistry simulation) and do all sorts of interesting changes. You could, as an example, go into their digestive system and tweak how efficiently they metabolize food, what effect poisons have on them or change up their whole hormone system.
Heck, when you have a good grasp of the genetic editing, you can rework their brain functions, with neurons and dendrites and all that stuff!
The games also have a coding language built in. That way you could, in theory, learn basic computer programming by making toys for your creatures to play with.
However, all of those things that I listed are purely optional. You don't have to do any of these. Some people don't even do the cute pet game aspect. They literally throw a bunch of creatures in the world and let the game run by itself, watching what happens. We call those "Wolfling Runs"
As for the next thing that may be of concern to a parent: the violence and sexual content are almost not existing.
You can hit creatures, and they can hit each other. They can even die from it. However, there is no blood, no bruises, no cuts or anything else of that matter. "Hitting" is just a sound effect and the person being hit starts frowning.
When norns die, they lie down and close their eyes. After 1-2 minutes, they vanish in a glittering sparkly cloud. No icky corpses or decay.
Lastly, reproduction. The Shee, the all-powerful creators in the game story, are canonically very prudish, so norns were literally designed not to have sex. Norns make babies by kissing each other and a couple minutes later, you hear a *plop* and you got yourself an egg.

Creatures isn’t on Steam-I’m pretty sure you’re mixing it up with a different game. Creatures is only avaliable on GOG.com (very good online store!) But reference what was said above by Papriko
Grendels aren't so bad, but I love Ettins! They're adorable! The complexity of creatures is quite amazing. |

Creatures is a great game for all ages, just as long as you let them know that they are living creatures that can breed, need to be fed, get sick sometimes and eventually die.
I don't like to be preachy, but please encourage them to treat them as if they are flesh and blood creatures. |
