So i uninstalled, and reinstalled in Documents folder, tried to breed and got this error:
"creatures encountered an exception during execution of a macro script,
most probably not due to a syntax error.
Offending portion of the macro: tl 4 1 0 lt 12,mate,endi,stim writ targ 0000 (square image)
Token: mate, owning obj: 04 01 01
cross your fingers and hope for now....."

I'm not familiar with the GOG Galaxy setup because I've never used it, never had interest in using it after bad experiences with other game bars, and I find myself occasionally without a constant internet connection. So I'm not at all certain what in the world it does when it installs games. But its a good practice to make sure that your machine isn't hiding old files in the Username/Appdata folders after uninstalling a game. Its been literal years where I had to do a fresh reinstall so my memory on the process is hazy, but I think just searching for "creatures" in your "Computer/My Computer" explorer window's search bar will do. When they're found, you can safely select and delete those files, and then try again with a fresh install.
As of Windows 7 and higher, for inexplicable reasons, the OS likes to hide copies of files which then give you trouble later after reinstalling and the game refers from those files straight away. Which is quite frankly annoying.
What I mainly do for installing just download the actual "offline" install file, run that like l normally would, and then run the Creatures Remastered patch. I'm having trouble finding links that further elaborate that process than I currently can though. Someone else may help you there.

I'm also using GOG - did you try using the Emergency Kit which will Restore your world to the last backup save? Alternatively you can also choose New World but you'll lose everything in it.
Unsurprisingly, I'm having a lot of crashes too after trying all my old favorite COBs. I haven't had any though d/t breeding issues though.
The biggest two crashes were bc I forgot the super speech toy breaks the game when it autosaves (I since have switched to the Enclopedia Nornica V2). And the passageways that connect Incubator to the Music room. Had to go test through each and every single COB in my list....
I did try installing LifeSaver which was supposed to be another backup tool in events like this, but it doesn't work.

I use Windows ten. I never use GOG galaxy to run it. I always download the installer. I never had very many issues running C1 on Windows 10.
I always run it as an Admin, and I always use the registry hack so you can load worlds.
In my opinion C3 and C1 are the most stable of all the creatures games in Windows 10. I even load the C1 to DS mod.

Considering how common it (W7 and higher hiding files everywhere and "forgetting" to delete them when uninstalling the program) is I'm surprised that there is no written help article with that little tidbit of information. Or I didn't find any when I went looking through the other sections of the site. In which case I forsee some writing about that on the horizon. Although I'm afraid I don't have much to say for troubleshooting on Windows 10 until I get my hands on a new laptop.
As for manually backing up or refreshing worlds, I know a few things, but I need some time to get my head back in order to explain how to do it in an easier way.
And just in case if either of you don't have it, here is the link to the Creatures Remastered Patch that I mentioned earlier. GoG doesn't include this in their install files but it should fix some issues that you may end up encountering otherwise. After running that, if you are still having errors related to cobs, you may want to take note of them for a different thread and see if we can help with fixing that.

I don't recall having had any issues with extracting the files into the default downloads folder and running the patch from there. As far as I remember there wasn't a need to move any of the files into the Creatures folder beforehand.
