But did Gameware SELL the IP or is it just a license?
It was sold to Bigben, who sold it to Spil. I made a blog post about it. |

I've heard back from Spil about the error I found in January - apparently Creatures Alchemist is "not supported at the moment".

Why bother releasing a game if you're going to leave it unsupported within months? |

Creatures Family was supposed to have come out last year. It is now 2018. I think that should tell you everything.
I honestly didn't mind Alchemist, to be truthful, if you looked at it as a standalone game and not an actual Creatures title. It's just a shame Spil are making the same mistakes that Fishing Cactus made with Creatures Online, wherein they go for long periods of time without giving us updates about the game. |

They're a shovelware developer. Spending time and money on a game after its release, in their style of development, does not pay itself off. |

it's just... leaving a game that's unplayable unsupported, within 7 months of its release... how did they think that that would 'delight' the existing fanbase?

@ Malkin I don't really think they care a lot. Maybe they hoped to make some quick money with reviving an old game and that was it. However, it is strange that they put a little bit effort into making a small game at all and then leaving it unsupported anyway.

I've never played Alchemist but isn't it the sort of game that could easily have been built and then had Creatures graphics slapped on it? It's just a Doodle God clone. There's nothing to say they put any effort in it at all as a Creatures game, it could easily have just been something they repurposed into part of the franchise that wasn't originally going to be. |

Well this is interesting... apparently the websites are a test zone for games to port to mobile? Guess Creatures Alchemist failed, then...

I posted a comment on one of Spil Games' posts, and surprisingly, received a message:
Hi,
Creatures is an iconic brand and an important part of our family of IPs. We remain excited and honored about bringing it to mobile gaming.
The launch of the Creatures mobile game has been delayed and we’re not currently able to confirm a new release date. We’re very sorry about this.
Maintaining the essence of an iconic brand like Creatures while making it relevant, exciting and challenging for mobile gamers is a big task. We want to get it right and not rush out a game that won’t live up to your and our own high expectations.
As soon we have more information we will let you know |

The lower end of my high expectations are that it should NOT be a mobile game, so that seems like a lost cause :/ |

That sounds like a really pretty way of saying "We're not working on it at the moment and have no immediate plans to." |

Perhaps it's for the best. I mean, look at how complex actual Creatures games are, and look at how badly Spil screwed up Creatures Alchemist, which was just a puzzle game...
Edit: Shame about the IP though. They seem content to sit on it forever. |

So we've been having some exciting discussions on Discord regarding this topic, and I have an idea that might be worth pursuing.
Now: various people have already made attempts to contact Spill or Gameware regarding IP, regarding source code, ... But without any clear results.
What if we got a little more serious about it? And by that I don't mean: "Let's create a kickstarter, gather a bunch of money and buy Creatures!"
No, I'm thinking about creating some kind of "creatures foundation": a non profit with a specific goal of preserving the Creatures games we know & love and (if at all possible) gaining and releasing the code to the public. It could give us a little more believability as a "corporate person" when dealing with these external parties.
I'm just wondering if anybody thinks this is a worthwhile cause or if the sentiment is more like "nah, just leave it". Because then it'll be a boring little Belgian foundation with me & Pilla as only members |

The closet thing we can do IMHO is make a game similar to Creatures but without the obvious usage of the name. I know that Geat_Masta chose the name "Kreatures" but quite frankly I wouldn't touch him or his project with a barge pole. |

I actually try to keep up with Geat_Masta's work on his YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQQUHfrdfEnaNwmAnJy5bOw). I know he may rub some people the wrong way but he's incredibly intelligent and his work with Kreatures (though regrettably slow because it's a hobby) is really ground-breaking, especially for the Creatures Community. His stuff is really interesting and I hope very, very, very much that he completes the project. I think the whole Community is really going to love it!

@Merboy From my minimal knowledge of the subject (I wasn't around for a while due to computer difficulties) there's no doubt of the skill or intelligence of the person working on kreatures, but rather that there's some sensitive social/political topics that they have some unpleasant beliefs about. The kind of things that would isolate or attack vulnerable/minority groups. I don't want to make this thread a discussion of *that* sort of thing but it's important not to praise someone 'regardless' of behavior that harmful.
Other users feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! I know that more than a few of us (myself and my wife included) are in minority racial or orientation groups so I like to err on the side of caution.

That's all I'm saying on this subject. It might be a good idea to not continue it.

@Grendel_Man thank you for the clarification, I appreciate the additional info since, again, I wasn't around for that period of time. Good to know that I should try to encourage and take part in OTHER projects.

I'm not familiar with his personal/political beliefs in the slightest. It's really none of my business. If you guys know something I don't then that's fair. I just thought he was smart and talented.

This really is not the place to discuss what Geat_Masta is or isn't. Let's get back on topic, please. Spil Games and Creatures Family.
Thanks. |

So next month will mark a year since Creatures Alchemist was released. I hate to be a pessimist, but I honestly see Creatures Family meeting a similar fate to Creatures Online, although at least Fishing Cactus bothered to keep us up to date with the game's progress. But maybe I'm wrong, perhaps we'll get an update on the project sooner than we think. |

Hello, All!
I just posted a little introduction for myself in the general forum. Long story short, I have been a fan of the Creatures series since the beginning (and I was involved in some projects back in the day), and I am so excited that there is a still a community!
Anyway, in digging in lately, I also found myself having a similar idea to skerit's. Has there been any traction with that? Surely there are enough of us to raise some funds for purchasing the IP! Any thoughts?
Best to you all!

Yep. They'd rather sit on the franchise indefinitely than give it to the community who might actually do something with it. |

Sad! Thanks for the info. Although I will say that it does appear that the Creatures community is the de facto collective owner of the series, including its continued development. Have there been any concerted attempts to organize a full overhaul of the game? This would involve creating a committee of artists and coders (not in the formal sense, but rather individuals who know how to create objects and rooms and so forth) who would work toward a new vision of the game. I imagine it would be reminiscent--though on a significantly smaller scale--of Beyond Skyrim (i.e., multiple volunteer teams developing various parts of a larger whole).
Thoughts? Has it already been tried? Are there enough active members to even do something like this?

Geat_Masta was permanently banned from this website in 2017, due to his repeated harassment and abuse of members and staff. His most recent account has now also been banned. Contact him offsite if you wish, but know that he is not welcome here. |

@zalherwitz there really kinda aren't enough of us to buy anything.
And such collabs have been tried, but, they need a small team of talented people who get along with each-other AND have the time to dedicate. So far, beyond c12ds and a few other large metarooms, all "big" problems just fall apart as one person or another has more important life commitments. Maybe GeatMasta's solo approach will work.
Meanwhile you can also check out Grandroids, by Steve Grand, there's more info on that around this forum. |

Every time this topic's been bumped, nothing good has come of it. Therefore, the staff team has decided to lock it.
If anything new comes of Spil (unlikely), we'll reopen the topic.
