I've been thinking, that what with our mutual love of raising creatures, critters, plants, ect, a list of games and other such things we all play would be a great idea!

That way, maybe we can discover new things to enjoy and share<3 Free games are especially great, so if you have any of those on hand, I'd love to know!

My initial offerings to the list are:

Viridi: A free-to-play plant/gardening sim/game on steam! You can pay for more stuff, but it also gives away a weekly freebie plant, so you don't need to pay to get everything, given time. Plants grow slowly and it's intended as a small window you can keep open while you do other stuff, where you can chill to the ambient music and check in on the plants. There's also a cute snail! Who doesn't want a cute snail<3

Digipet BettaBetta: Haven't played this myself yet! But it's a desktop pet game with extra elements (such as pet battling), that allows you to keep a variety of beautifully modelled and animated, realistic betta fish in different tanks! You have to pay to get the full game, but there's a demo version that is free with limited content. Some CC users already play this! c:

Happy Aquarium: A free-to-play Facebook aquarium-sim game. It has some pay-for content, but the in-game currency can be gained by maintaining the tank/ect with some patience and without using real money. You can also add friends to it to make life easier and get a lot of free stuff, as long as you're ok with Facebook friends. It has a surprisingly enormous amount of customisable content, as long as you're ok with an often cartoony and colourful style.

It also has a genetics/hybridising system that functions on sprite and palette systems akin to the creatures games! It takes a lot of time, but i think some of the heavier breed-makers here may really enjoy that aspect.

Monster Galaxy: a free-to-use Facebook pokemon-esque game. This one has it's limits, as friend-adding seems to be glitchy, but again it's a game that if you have some patience, you don't have to pay anything for it! Nothing extremely special about it, but it has a gorgeous hand-painted style with some interesting quirky creature designs.

Seed Game: A strangely fun, simple plant keeping game. You start with some default plant seeds and hybridise them and let them mutate over time and generations! You can take an active part or set it up and let them reproduce and evolve over time. Also has access to their 'genes' which is a string of data affecting factors such as petal number, hue shift, and various growth aspects. With some experimenting, you can code your own strains and share! A 24+hours no-interference run of this was part of the inspiration for the mossy shee's tree agent! Some CC members have played this, myself included.

Among Ripples: A pond ecosystem simulator that's free on steam! Relatively minimalist and containing only a few species of fish along with some invertebrates (and an otter~) which you spawn and try to balance in a rough food chain to keep a clean, oxygenated pool. The instructions are pretty loose and the general idea is to maintain in whichever way makes you happiest. Not a giant game, but totally free and very relaxing!

Falling Sands: A free browser based particle and physics simulator first and foremost, so the primary objective is meant to be discovering and playing with the properties of various elements and objects in a pixel-art style. However it does have a few ecology/life tools that can be used to make simple but cute biomes! The life included is trees (grown through seed-particles), 'plant' matter, bees and ants. The latter two have their own impact on the plant-life, and water of differing kinds plays a part in how they function! You draw the matter onto a blank canvas environment, giving you full control of what happens. Can you create a stable environment? Or will you try to find the critical mass of uranium instead. [nlaugh] Also additionally comes with a saving option if you're registered on-site.

Flower Game: A free pixel art, plant and flower based version of the 'click to grow/level' kind of pet site. It has some advantages though in that it has a pokedex-style compendium of every plant you grow, so that you never lose access to the art and info of previous plants. Also easy to maintain without outside help, as you can water and help your plants by playing mini games! So you don't actually need to get anyone to click anything. Plants grow in semi-realistic time over the course of a week or two, and seem to have a breeding function as well to make more of your existing plants, including special event plants. The site was originally in german, and so some of the translations can be a little quirky, but the german fairytale art-style is charming and unique. The games are childishly easy, making plant care equally simple, but there's a click and point adventure to earn special items that is outrageously challenging! Good luck! (I needed a tutorial~)

Species: Free while in Alpha stage, this is a somewhat spore-esque species making/survival of the fittest game. You can directly edit creatures to change how they appear, or leave them to evolve their own features through time and natural selection. c: The style is a little abstract and made of simple shapes with textured surfaces, but the actual evolution going on is fairly complex, as is the environment they live in. Evolutionary trees are included that show branches and changes in species and genus. Well worth a look while it's free!

Hope these are fun for some of you guys! You don't have to add any input, but I'd love to see and to share. c:

Ohhh a handy list! Hopefully it will get longer soon : 3

The most similar things to these I've played are probably simple stuff like flight rising and dino island.

Dino island is a sort of zoo tycoon that lets you genetically alter dinosaurs and change their coloring and feathers and stuff if I remember well..

Then there's Impossible Creatures which isn't a pet sim but you can take any two animals and cross them and select which body parts you prefer to get the best fighters. It's lots of fun, I mean just look at these guys!

I love dino island! I used to have it! -and I had a great time making strange dino crosses and mutants<3

Unfortunately, the game isn't for sale anywhere now because of age, and I've never found an online copy that worked c':

Gryffs:
A browser-based gryffon breeding and battling game. It's invite only, and sort of hard to start out in, but players tend to send money and gryffs to help people start out. If anyone wishes to play, I can generate a code for them.

Lucky Lapine:
Lucky Lapine is a browser-based realistic mainly rabbit breeding sim with real genetics. The playerbase is friendly and fun. Right now, you can only breed Rabbits and Guinea Pigs (Cavies) but more such as rats and hedgehogs are planned in the future. It's currently invite only, so I can generate codes for people if asked.

Khimeros:
Khimeros is a browser-based chimera breeding sim where you can crossbreed different animals for different looks. A large userbase and well-kept economy makes this game fairly fun.

Beast keeper:
A browser-based beast-breeding game where you rasie, battle, catch and breed different beasts. There are Unicorns, Rocs, Pumas, Dragons, Cockatrice, Lykos, Symurgh, Throdama, Gryphons and Kami. If you decide to join, please use my referral link, which is right here. If you complete the tutorial, I get 10 gold coins.

I'll probably post some more later when I'm up to it, because I know alot, play alot and there are alot.

Petz is a brilliant series, I'd definitely recommend getting your hands on it. The petz themselves don't have an intelligence of their own as far as I know (either purely pre-programmed by genetics, or if they aren't they are extremely basic), but they're still pretty endearing and the genetic possibilities are a ton of fun.

The fandom of course makes things a lot more interesting, from creating fully functioning pet dragons, new scenes, new clothes, just about anything.

@Missmysterics ahh I had the original catz and also Oddballz, which is amazing and also vaguely creatures-esque, especially with the varied alien-creature hatcher and toys vendor!

If only there were a mac version, that was a lot of fun hehe~

Black and White has you raising and training a massive anthropomorphic creature to help with managing your villages.

Yeah Jesseth, I actually loved playing it but the colors were all broken! The dino's looked mostly yellow with warped/non existing textures : ( It would be cool finding an online copy...I still have the original cd-rom tho : )

I'd say Pokémon sorta counts. I remember getting pokémon silver when I was like 10 and I didn't know what it would be like and it blew my mind! The fact they could lay eggs and there's day and night : D I definitely have very fond memories of that game...

Petz are amazing <3 I don't like the new z-series that emerged including hamsterz and horsez. The original PF Magic-games were so much more fun.

PonyIsland.net is a my little pony-type browser game where you breed and collect horses. It has a gene-system in place with dominance-order and hybrids. For example, if you breed a dragon pony with a mer pony you can get a merdragon pony. They give you 20 days as a trial and then you have to start paying. My name there is jcnorn, as everywhere else ;)

Pinna is a realistic bird game. Your birds grow up, mate, etc in real time. They do eventually die, but they have a lifespan measured in years. Several of the available species have a genetic component to their appearance - the gouldian finches in particular have a huge range of color combinations. Unfortunately, since it's quite old the animations tend to run fast on modern computers, but I still find it relaxing to play and try and get the birdies to trust me.

Goblin Garden is a freeware game where, well, you raise goblins in a garden. It's not going to entertain you for ages, but it's fun to play for a little while, and there is a breeding/genetic component to their appearance, lifespan, etc.

I liked Black and White... Black and White 2 was pretty good too... Definitely fun little god games, and the beast you got to raise was a nice perk.

Monster Rancher... All of the games... but I really loved I and II... the memories of playing Monster rancher on my playstation... My beloved eclair (worm/hare) finally getting me my first win in the coveted championship tournament, my first dragon, The sad death of my first monster (HOPPYY!!!).

Since people are mentioning facebook games and stuff, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Neopets... They are browser-based, still around and going strong I think... I used to have one a really long time ago, and that site has a TON of things to do on it. You can raise them to get stronger and battle, or better at other things, and also customize them in all kinds of ways... There's a thriving in-game economy, etc.

Furry-Paws is like Lucky Lapine but with dogs. It has over 200 dog breeds and they have genetics for colors, health, stats, etc. and you can take care of them, enter them in shows, and breed them and try to get puppies that will do better in shows than the parents. Also the forums have a nice art community which is the only reason a lot of us are still there :P

Wajas is more like PonyIsland or sites like that, in that you just breed for colors/markings (with hex codes so they can be literally any color) and can't really do anything else with your pets except dress them up with items. It has wolves/dogs, I think about a dozen types of them, and some are kind of fantasy-looking. I haven't played it for a while so I don't know if it's changed...

I know a million other browser-based sim games like those but for some reason those are the only two that I've kept going back to play for years. :o

There are a billion-and-one of these so-called "virtual pet" websites that are just Neopet clones and not really anything to do with raising simulated animals, could we not list them all here? I mean, it's up to Jesseth ultimately, but when this thread popped up I was hoping it would be populated with actual pet sims. It's so hard to find decent sims these days because Google is so utterly chock full of the browser RPG type. :(

Just a suggestion, feel free to ignore if you don't agree.

I will keep my eyes and ears open. :) No different from usual really, I'm always on the lookout for them!

This site lists a whole bunch of pet games, btw: Computer Critters. I've linked to a specific game's page, because the site is very old and a bit broken, and this is the only way to see the full list of games down the left side.

On that list is another one I own: Pinna! Sadly, like many of the games listed there, it's extremely difficult to find these days. AniDragons was fantastic as well.

What exactly are your standards for an "actual pet sim" then? Do the animals have to be animated to count as being simulated? I wouldn't lump all the browser games together as Neopets clones, I know Neopets is barely about the pets, but I don't see how some of the other ones (especially the more realistic ones) are not about raising simulated animals.

Pets that do stuff on their own, can move and act autonomously, and don't just exist as a set of numbers on somebody's profile page, basically. It doesn't take much to satisfy me. :)

The reason all these browser games feel identical is because they basically are. There's a software development kit that virtually all of them are built with. Sort of an RPGMaker thing, except for making virtual pet websites. That's why almost all of them have the same set of features: adopt your starter pet, click around a "world map" and visit places to find food or currency, donate to the "giving tree", buy lottery tickets... etc. They all have their own lick of paint but underneath they're all pretty much identical. That's also why the pets are never animated and never do stuff without the user's input: that would require the administrators to actually know how to code stuff, and that's hard. It would also be resource-intensive for a website of thousands of users and millions of pets.

They're basically just a giant database where users move numbers around and look at pretty Photoshop art, because that's all a website can really handle unless you code a proper, real MMO game with a complex backend.

Pinna and Aquazone were two amazing games, the first giving you a bird cage and the second an aquarium, where creatures with genetically inheritable appeareances would grow and breed if you remembered to feed and clean.

Does anyone still have them (especially Pinna?) I can't find a source on the internet anymore :(

I also remembered at the time of the Virtual Pets Forum, that I'd also found a cool little game with hamsters. it was all in japanese, but you could buy and keep couples of hamsters in cages, and decorate the cages.

I have a copy of Pinna somewhere, but it's on a CD-ROM (I did have a memory stick around that time but it broke and I had to use CDs for download stuff from the library) and I have no idea where it is right now. I also fondly remember the Virtual Life Forum, I was on it frequently during Summer 2008. Makes me sad that it is now gone. :(

  8/24/2015

@GimmeCat: Yeah, unfortunately, I can't think of a whole lot of games like that really, monster rancher games are fun monster raising sims that focus mostly on taking care of your monster and feeding and training it right, and the black and white games gave you a nice pet that you raise and depending on what you do it gets different personalities, The Zoo Tycoon games could go in here too, sort of.

I really liked the system of raising monsters and making golems in Legend of Mana, that had that aspect too, you had to find eggs in obscure locations and raise them, they'd come with you and kind of do what they wanted, but you could train them right and they'd even act differently based on their diets (or a set of programs you could add to them in the case of golems).

But really thinking actual virtual pet sims, there's petz, which I never got into, and creatures, tamagotchi, and a few fishtank kind of things, things like the 'Species' game that are at least a-life sims, but there really does not seem to be a lot out there like that, where you get to really take care of something, that I know of... Grandroids, I need you to come out!

I have the Pinna installation file and what appears to be an update exe, but being on 64-bit Windows these days I can't run them.

@Allekha, the screenshot looks familiar but I don't think I ever found a copy to try it out.

I'd LOVE to find a copy of AniDragons. I used to have the demo version and you wouldn't believe how well animated the dragons were! I mean, I'd say "movie quality", but movies rarely do it right. I've never seen something, before or since, as realistically animated as the AniDragons and I wish a premium copy existed somewhere.

@Allekha Yes, that's it! :D I considered I'm "finished" the game when, by buying and breeding, I'd managed to get every possible color in the game. I think you could have exactly as many cages as there were colors, so they must have been 18 total variations. They actually did have babies with a pattern similar to the parents too.

Would anyone try sending me pinna or aquazone if I give them my email? They are pretty much abandonware.

Talking about abandonware, take a look at this

Hmm... I'm not sure how they compare to similar games nowadays, but Last Day of Work's games Fish Tycoon and Plant Tycoon might be worth looking at too. Both are fairly similar to each other, requiring you to crossbreed fish or plants and find combinations with special abilities - for instance, one of the special fish lets all fish in the tank go longer without being fed. At the same time, you have to make a profit by producing and selling fish you don't need in order to buy supplies and upgrades that will let you handle more exotic varieties.

Mind you, the game does not contain a true genetic component - each fish or plant has two traits (such as body and fins in the case of the fish) and combining parents with different traits results in offspring with completely different, pre-determined traits rather than traits taking after the parents - unless both parents have the same trait for the given part, in which case the offspring will have the same trait as the parent. This allows you to both keep track of your combinations and mass produce valuable ones for maximum profit.

Both games are available for iOS and PC. On PC, Fish Tycoon is free and Plant Tycoon is still a paid game.

What specifically do you need help with? It's all real-life time, so long as you have the time turned on for that cage - you can turn it off if you just want to look at them or can't care for them for a while.

The birds have lifespans in actual years. Birds are more likely to mate in their breeding months but I've seen them mate at other times of the year. The strawberry finch males turn a pretty red in the fall/winter. When they do mate, the babies have a few weeks before they emerge (and they still have some growing up to do). The birds get a little hungry/thirsty every day; getting their trust seems to take a few weeks. Unlike, say, Petz, this happens even if you don't bring the game up, but they don't need care every single day if you forget.
