Trying to reslot the Zoran Norns...

I was trying to perform a reslot of the Zoran Norns so I could use them and the Draconian Norns in the same install. I planned to put them on Ettin X, since all that was there was the Glacier Ettins and they only had a unique tailsprite. I downloaded the utility named, well, ReSlot, but I also read that you needed to edit the genetics file of the breed you're reslotting. Messing with the Genetics Kit, I managed to find the Zoran Norn's Appearance genes and edited them to Ettin X, aaaand... it's not working. The egg agent is hatching Norns with Zora tails but Bruin everything else, which tells me I did something KINDA right, but not right enough. And the Draconians are working fine.

This is what I did:

1. Used ReSlot to backup all breeds

2. Uninstalled Draconians

3. Manually installed all the Zora stuff

4. Used ReSlot to move Zora stuff to Ettin X

5. Edited (almost wrote "ettined," ha) the Zora .gen file so appearance genes pointed to Ettin X

6. Restored Draconians from backup

Any help? And I'm pretty new to a lot of this stuff, so, as they say on the rest of the Internet, explain like I'm five.

Maybe try doing it with a different slot. I doubt it's a coincidence you're having only the tail show up correctly when replacing a breed that only has tail sprites.

If all the Zoran sprites were properly renamed then they should all be showing up, regardless of the breed slot chosen. Are you sure you have every appearance gene changed correctly in the genome?

Hmm. I'm not sure if that would affect anything, though, since I've never downloaded the Glacier Ettins before. (I mostly chose it to keep my options open in terms of future downloaded breeds/slots, since it seemed like it'd have the least issues.) Could be worth a shot.

I have no idea if I fixed the genome properly or if the sprites got reslotted properly. D: What I did for the genome was, I opened the genome file in the Creatures 3 genetics kit, went to the gene list, sorted by Gene Type, and went to the five appearance genes and changed them all to "Ettin X." I noticed there were five Appearance Gene slots, and I have no idea if that's normal since this is my first time tweaking genes. I went to each one, and changed the "Donor Species" and Slot to Ettin and X. I noticed each Appearance Gene had a dropdown list for Head, Body, Tail, etc., but changing the Species and Slot for one body part SEEMED to change them all for that gene... like I said, I'm new at this, so I wasn't sure if I needed to manually go to each thing in the dropdown menu.

I've also heard ReSlot can have issues? But I don't fully understand that, either. I suppose manually going through images is an issue, but I'd like to isolate the genetic variables first since that's the part I understand the least.

The appearance of each separate body part is determined by a gene.

If the 'head' appearance gene is Ettin X, it will use the head of whatever breed you have installed in Ettin X.
You need to make sure that all five body parts: head, body, arms, legs and tail are each using the Ettin X slot.

Is it at all possible that you've typoed in that field, and the game, being confused, has decided to display Bruin sprites for the ones it doesn't understand?

You should wind up with an appearance gene for the Ettin X head, one for the Ettin X body, one for the Ettin X tail, etc. Each gene should be a different body part.

The drop down menu is saying "which body part do you want this gene to be for", not "here's all the body parts this gene covers", you should set it to a different body part in each of the five genes. Head Body Arm Leg Tail.

It sounds like you're saying you set it to Ettin X in one gene and then went down the drop down menu IN THAT GENE, is that correct? All you did there is change what body part you were affecting by that gene.

THANK YOU. This is the information I was looking for! I now understand how that works, and I was able to get them working!

...Until they reached adulthood, and the game crashed when a female one tried to lay an egg, because they're supposed to use special egg sprites and I'm not sure where to change that bit but clearly some pointers were off. Back to the drawing board...

When you downloaded the zoran norns, in the zip file there should have been a file named eggs.c16. Did you put that in your Images folder? It'll prompt you to overwrite; I'd highly recommend backing up your existing eggs.c16 file in Images first (I usually rename it eggs.backup or something instead of eggs.c16).

Basically, I don't think it's a genetics issue, I think it's an incomplete install issue. I don't know how to give a new breed a custom egg sprite, but I've been through the zoran genome and I don't see anything that could do it genetically.

EDIT: Unless it's in the brain itself somewhere. I've got no clue when it comes to brain lobes and stuff like that. But it seems unlikely. Anyway, there's no shiny new gene labeled "EGG SPRITE HERE" or anything.
